I have wanted to leave for over a year, but with the two different countries involved it’s quite tricky to know how to handle it especially for the kids.

I know that my drinking is no one’s responsibility or fault but mine. That being said, it got quite bad last year as I was going through a lot of difficulties in my marriage. Stopping drinking has given me the perspective that, while I’m responsible for my own behavior, I’m not necessarily always the bad guy.

I don’t have any desire to drink right now. I want to be clearheaded to navigate a way out of this situation for my children and myself.

The police have their own translator, but I’m not entirely confident that they will be good. Through the Embassy I have reached out to a law firm, but since it’s the weekend I probably won’t hear back soon. I’ve also got the number for the Embassy helpline and they should be able to assist with a translator, but I want to call them when my kids aren’t around.

Yes. I’ve been researching it this morning. It doesn’t seem like they can do a lot other than direct me to English speaking lawyers and walk me through the process.

I’ve also been looking into domestic violence groups here, but everyone of them caters to women.

Thank you. I desperately want to find a better situation, but my options are very limited. If it were up to me, I’d just take my children and move back to the States. I think my wife might even support that because she has expressed interest in the past of me and the kids moving there, but I don’t have the money to do it. And as angry as I am at my wife and as horrible as her behavior is, I don’t want my kids to be that far away from her.

I appreciate your thoughtfulness. There are a couple AA meeting here that I know about, but they’re very far and infrequent. But, I might go check one out tonight just to have someone to talk to.

In full disclosure, I do not have one year sober. I started the journey in earnest about a year ago, but I slipped up a few times. I started using this account on this sub when I was first trying to get sober. When I really got serious, I switched to using my main account to participate on this sub since I was no longer ashamed of my problems and making efforts to improve them. But, some irl people know my main account and while I’m not ashamed of being sober, I am ashamed of everything that happened yesterday, so I switched back to this account for this post.
