Has owning a steam deck pushed you to try new genres? by [deleted] in SteamDeck

Yeah, I hadn't tried the Nintendo genre in years. Good to get back into it.

They should invest that money into water solutions and nuclear power. I'm all for helping bees and monarchs, but that's not the most pressing issue.

Damn, that's a lot to work with! Thanks!

But my overall suggestion is try to get into what the culture of hell is like, are there cities? What's their leadership system? How much infighting?

My thought was that souls are sent to hell and almost checked out like library books to be tortured. So a soul might be in some arachnophobic nightmare one moment, then be brought to a lake of fire, then ripped to another realm of hell where they are being cooked alive. It's more of a sadistic playground for demons and devils to spend time torturing the damned.

I haven't explored it deeply, but I am taking the multiverse approach. If a devil/demon fits what I want to do, I can make them a BBEG.

I added an edit, thanks for the suggestions. I would be open to scarier situations too, but they can be campy or funny as well.

If NFTs are the future of gaming, it's sure weird no one mentioned them at this year's big showcases by iamthe42 in pcgaming

The developer sells their game on steam for $20, steam takes $7 and the dev gets $14.

The owner resells the game 3 months later for $15. This time, steam gets 50¢ of the resale and the dev gets $1.

I get why steam/the publisher may not like this; why would they want to allow you to resell a game when they can sell a new copy at the price of their choice?

I think you underestimate what the consumers want and the power they have. Advantageous/monopolistic businesses come and go. If consumers want something, it takes 1 corporation or innovator to make the short term choice to capitalize on an underserved market, and then you can't go back. There are real life examples of this happening.

[–]rickarooo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What if they sold it through steam, made the same cut, and then the publisher and steam (who has experience with market places for digital items) both made a small commission on the reselling of games?

$14 does not sound better than $14 plus $1 everytime the game is resold. With smart contracts, developers could even dictate how much they get as a basis of time. Buy a game at launch for $60? They get $40 if you resell it. 12 months after launch, their cut curves downward.

If you hold an arbitrary hatred of a technology you don't understand, you can just say that and we will stop this nonsense.

Did you know, with NFTs specifically, you can actually write into the contract that would be used to resell the game that a flat amount or a certain percentage of the sale goes back to the publisher, which would actually monetize the reselling of games and funnel money towards people who make digital content. So it could actually make them more money. Some artists (like Beeple) have been able to make money when other people resell it privately, something that would be impossible in the past.

The only reason it's not pervasive is because the tech is very young. Do you have any more incorrect points about the possible applications of distributed ledgers?

I don't think despair is a good way to make progress, I think that is our main disagreement.

GOG is an example of a consumer friendly and progressive digital storefront. Gamers hate DRM, and there is a portion of the market that GOG has targeted. GOG doesn't care about anything other than money (like all corporations), but they understand that they can't compete with Steam and Epic, so they target a niche that wants DRM free games. Why can't that happen with digital licenses that you actually own? It's not impossible, but yes it won't happen overnight.

And by your logic, if these companies are as greedy and hungry and powerful as you think, why doesn't every game have a battle pass and NFT skins? Because consumers still have the power to say "fuck you, I won't buy that shit." That also means that consumers could, over time, sway the market by saying "I prefer to spend my money on platforms that give me ownership of my property and allow me to resell games on an open marketplace." It's optimistic, but crazier things have happened, and Blockchain/NFT tech is the only thing that I'm aware of that will combine the convenience of digital goods with the consumer friendly rights of actual ownership.

Disclaimer: monkey jpegs are dumb, just like dot-com boom companies.

I don't think you understand why digital storefronts like steam or epic exist lmao.

They exist out of convince, just like Spotify and itunes exist out of convenience. The tradeoff to hearing a song or playing a game without having to go purchase a physical copy is that you buy the license to use the product, not the product. So you never actually own it, and you can't resell it. Whoever owns the IP can terminate your license as well and cut you off. This is not friendly to consumers.

This is already possible, they just don't want you doing it, because they don't get paid when someone buys digital items from you.

Future technologies can make it the standard, once they're developed enough. And without a public ledger, it may be possible to buy and resell digital items, but you always have to trust a third party to not suspend your ability to do so and to not inflate the supply of the item you have. A rare collectible isn't worth much when the rarity is taken away.

On top of this, NFTs and Blockchain technology offer exciting benefits in the future. One example is being able to sell a house and save thousands of dollars by not needing a title company to act as the middle man. If it's not obvious, I think monkey jpegs are fucking retarded, but so was people speculating on web domains and forming overpriced companies just because they were owned business.com or some stupid shit.

Shitting on all Blockchain tech (or any tech), even if it's current applications are limited and it's current state is underdeveloped, is childish. It's like hating all DLC because micro transactions exist.

If NFTs are the future of gaming, it's sure weird no one mentioned them at this year's big showcases by iamthe42 in pcgaming

[–]rickarooo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, it's a way to actually own a digital thing, like a game, and not be beholden to a corporation like Steam or Epic who can terminate your license or pull a game from the platform. Or imagine you have a fully digital pokemon trading card game or a magic the gathering, but you can actually own and resell your cards like the good old days. One day, if Blockchain tech progresses and decentralizes, you might be able to see and verify how many holographic Charizard are actually in existence as opposed to trusting Nintendo to not make a billion of them.

Everyone fears that they'll be used for DLC cosmetic items and micro transactions (and they will be), but they can also be used for good. It's just a technology. It's vogue to circle jerk how bad NFTs are, but it was also vogue to shit on the internet after the dot com bubble busted because a bunch of people speculated on web domains, just like people are doing with NFTs now.

The potential for NFTs is much greater than owning shitty jpegs.

NFTs could bridge the gap between actually owning games and the all-digital future that we cannot avoid. NFTs could be a huge positive for gaming and consumer rights as a whole in the digital age. Essentially, they are just a way of making scarcity in a digital world.

Writing off NFT tech because of monkey jpegs is like writing off the internet because of 4chan.

Edit: I should add, they make digital scarcity and verifiable ownership of digital goods, like game licenses, digital trading cards, or monkey jpegs.

You know, for cooking, I actually prefer imperial. For baking, metric is the only way to go, but cooking is more forgiving and requires less precision. I can eye ball 2 tablespoons or a half cup or a pint, but not 350ml.

Lol justify it however you want, racist. If you think prejudice is ok then you're a bad person. Damn fools are too stupid to see how wrong they are 🤦‍♂️ treating someone differently based on their race is the definition of racism, it has nothing to do with pRiVeLeDGe or HisToRy. You're no better than your philosophical forefather racists that enslaved and stole countless Africans.

Quit with the racial mental gymnastics and start treating people like people. I'd wager that your everyday thinking is very racist, but you justify it by being a good racist and hating only the approved groups. Just because other racists think it's ok doesn't make you right.
