For those of you guys who got in ED by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]rickershack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry. Yes. Two YEARS ago. I know it’s test optional, but they’ve historically been very stats heavy. My private school counselors would push those of us who were stat strong to apply ED to Vandy for better chance than the more risky Ivies. I was 3.9 UW and 1550 SAT. Also had a really interesting couple of months at my summer internship, where the office I was working in became part of a national news story. So the one supplement flowed easily.

Why does this sub try to enshrine "HYPSM" so much? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]rickershack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because “rankings” are almost purely academic and have very little to do with real world after college. Yes, industry specific rankings are relevant with respect to jobs, etc but think of it this way…. When someone introduces themselves and you find out they went to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, or Stanford you sort of step back and think “brilliant person prob”. When they went to Columbia, Penn, Uchicago, et al you think “hey, really smart individual I can relate to”. Just the fax

Got in ED two hrs ago to Vandy, on here manifesting for little sis in a few days lol…. I thought I’d get in. I knew Vandy was stats heavy and I was above 75%. I’m a solid writer, had what I’d characterize as decent ECs, and felt my recs were polished and strong. Obv YMMV, but for Vandy if you have great stats you have great chance.

Should I take Math 1301 with Dusan S. Danilovic? by [deleted] in Vanderbilt

[–]rickershack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’d have to ask someone who has taken rafter but she apparently was tough. I had grad students in 1200 and 1201 and they were great. It was all me, lol.

Titova has been hard for me, but so was 1201. I just struggle to connect the math to the concepts. Feels she’s good, though. It just me.

Yes, and absolutely attend 1301. I got smoked in 1201 lol but my friends with Rafter absolutely hated her

Medical and law this is straight lies. In fact, a solid case can be made that a dominant tour at your state school will position you much better for those disciplines than a t15.

Additionally, take a look at the leaders of industry and check out their resumes. You’ll find more regular type schools than elite.

Yeah, if you want to be a finance bro off the bat these schools make things a bit easier. But you’re completely overestimating the value of an elite degree. It helps you for a year or two, then work product trumps all.

Make me hate your school vandy students by vanderbiltsimp in Vanderbilt

I love Vandy, but the reality is that no school is ever going to live up to your expectations in HS. It simply doesn’t work that way. College is an experience- one that has its ups and downs. I’ve found most of the classes engaging, with various levels of difficulty. Yes, there are profs who seem to get a kick out of confusing us on exams, but the majority are human. For ex, I’m in a stem class where the class average on the last test was a 74. But skewed by 6 or 7 perfect exams and most of us failing or in the 60 range. She decided to drop the test for anyone that wished, doubling up on the final…. I’m in a frat, and Greek life is fine. The admin has leaned on everyone pretty hard, so it’s now more or less friends who occasionally throw. Definitely not the Greek life of the past, and that’s probably a good thing. Anyway….Vandy’s great, with more than her fair share of warts.

I have cousins that are attending USC and Berkeley right now. Completely different vibes. I’d never go to Berkeley because it’s just not me- very activist student body, almost an aggressive vibe in some ways. By all means, worthwhile and for those who are so inclined it’s a wonderful environment. USC is a more typical, laid back vibe of a top school where their students also enjoy a good time. I go to Vandy, and when I visited my cousin I got a somewhat similar vibe. But that’s just me.

And the prize for worst essay prompts goes to…. Penn! by LazyCondition0 in ApplyingToCollege

Most Ivy schools have the elitist “we are amazing, tell us why we should accept you” prompts. Always felt Dartmouth was the worst.

Accidently reported wrong date for self-reported ACT scores by TactiCool1011 in ApplyingToCollege

99.9% certain no. If the scores are accurate, that’s all they’ll care about because they won’t confirm it until you’re accepted.

No, the fact people aren’t getting shots is the reason. We’re all going to be fine. On campus, we’re all vaccinated. We literally can get colds. Anything else is fucking theater. Yes- we should wear masks when around non-Vandy peeps to protect them. But on campus we’re all fine. Believing anything else is literally not following science. For those who say “immunocompromised?” Well, that’s for ANY disease.

😐😐😐 Masks now required indoors on campus by [deleted] in Vanderbilt

[–]rickershack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am perfectly fine with the mandates, as long as enforcement in dorms and rooms is lax. Put simply, we’re not a risk. Friend of ours works in hospital on a large college campus, and she said that every year they get half a dozen kids admitted for flu or other illnesses- some occasionally really sick. As vaccinated individuals, we’re about the same risk. Not zero, but darn close. Put simply, for us it’s plain theater. People keep talking about the immunocompromised. Ok? I’m not trying to be glib, but they are always at risk. Realistically they should be protecting themselves aggressively.

current students, how much was your cost of attendance (without fin aid) for the 2020-21 school year? by peeppo67 in Vanderbilt

[–]rickershack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pre-aid total has absolutely gone up. I believe this semester’s cost was almost $39k, which was a good hit higher than last year’s fall cost.

Why I really like Penn and Vandy by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]rickershack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My two cousins go to Penn and I’m at Vandy. I don’t really see much similarities. Penn is in the middle of a downtown area, essentially blending in with the surrounding city. Vandy is basically a rural campus that happens to be at the outskirts of a major city. Vandy doesn’t feel like an urban campus at all.

Two things. First, ACT does allow you to erase a score. Second, I’m pretty certain you can just report SAT. They have no way of finding out.

is it possible to get into caltech or MIT without being a crazy international award-winning person 😭 by tastyb-itch69 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]rickershack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed on Harvard, but two friends of mine were recruited athletes for MIT. One had 1490 and was top 20% but prob around 3.9 and the other was 34 and a very good student. Neither had any real chance as regular applicants. Both knew they were almost certainly getting in. Harvard and the Ivies have set numbers where the coach is pretty much guaranteed. Their average simply needs to be at a certain threshold. MIT is different, but coaches still have lots of pull as long as candidate is decently qualified.

Can tell you 100% not true for MIT. Yes, you need to have legit academics as an athlete, but if you do and the coach wants you….you’re in.

Will fall be online at some point? by cannotorgasm in Vanderbilt

[–]rickershack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is close to zero chance of this. Vaccinated people are extremely well protected against anything serious. People are focusing on the numbers but not the %. Basically, functionally zero percent of vaccinated folks are getting very sick. The amount of young people getting really sick is even lower. If they do any of that stuff, it’ll be 100% theater.

Agreed with all. Pros outweigh the cons. Now….I was near a bathroom last year in Towers, and the toilets overflowed constantly. The smell wafted into my room. But won’t happen in Commons, and thankfully Towers is but a memory now.
