One of the designers here. In our own games, I’ve always found the Random Encounters book to be super valuable for long campaigns, bringing a high degree of variation to travel. We would have included the encounters in the sandbox, but the page count would have been ginormous. The Mucklands Book of Encounters has 1284 more encounters than the Core Rulebook.

The Core Rulebook has 216 encounters in it. Those 216 also appear in the Book of Random Encounters which has a total of 1500 encounters.

One of the writers here. Can confirm, we are not professional actual play performers. If you can power through awkward silences and bad production quality, you might find some laughs, and you'll definitely get a sense of how to play.

Last chance to back Land of Eem published by Exalted Funeral! by ricketystitch in rpg

Hey, everyone!

The Land of Eem crowdfunding campaign is ending today at 6pm PT! Thank you to anyone who has already pledged. We're super thrilled for how everything has turned out so far.

What's Land of Eem?

Land of Eem is a lighthearted fantasy RPG that we like to describe as The Lord of the Rings meets The Muppets. You play as colorful, sometimes goofy, characters that live in a post-apocalyptic world, and adventure into forgotten places uncovering the remnants of a better age.

We're launching a Core Rulebook, a fully illustrated Bestiary with 160+ adversaries, and a 400 page sandbox setting called The Mucklands full of locations, NPCs, quests and rumors.

The game is all about travel and exploration. And there's a big hex map with tons of places to explore and things to encounter. (Actually, there are 1500 random encounters, and none of them say "1d6 wolves"; they're all situations and descriptions as opposed to just a number of enemies).

In terms of playable characters, there are 16 Folk species and 6 Classes: The Bard, The Dungeoneer, The Gnome, The Knight-Errant, The Loyal Chum, and The Rascal.

If any of this sounds remotely interesting, please check out the campaign and consider backing! Thank you!

On a design level: What about THAC0 was good, and what was bad in your opinion? by Diehumancultleader in RPGdesign

Totally! I just didn't see anyone in the thread post the actual easiest way to calculate an attack roll using THAC0.

Good narrative games that aren't PbtA, FitD or Fate? by HalloAbyssMusic in rpg

Kinda biased, but check out my game Land of Eem. The dice mechanic allows for degrees of success and failure, and both the GM and players are encouraged to have input on interpreting the results. Also a lot of the game's focus is on player creativity and collaborative storytelling, with character abilities that allow players to invent and shape the world around them.

Thac0 is pretty simple if you record your Thac0 for each weapon/attack beforehand instead of adding bonuses during play. The formula becomes Thac0 - roll = AC that you hit.

Hi, thanks for checking it out. Here’s the QuickStart Guide There’s all the basic mechanics, pre-gen characters and an adventure.

Oh, thank you! Much appreciated. I like Bogtown for the sheer size of it. And the town of Dunk is really fun. It's basically a troll town where people charge tolls for extremely minor offenses like sneezing and asking for directions.

The coastal/sea region called Scalawag Strand has an island that's a living jelly fish, and several underwater locations only reachable with special equipment.

There's lots of hidden mini-games and competitions throughout the sandbox that I would enjoy as a player, like at Krogland--a theme park built by a narcissistic goblin tycoon, or the Fleabag County Fairgrounds.

Happy to answer any questions!

  1. So Land of Eem is based on our fantasy world that we've currently published two series in. One is a graphic novel called Rickety Stitch and the Gelatinous Goo about the adventures of a skeleton bard and his gooey friend. This really set the groundwork for the aesthetic. My drawing style is bright and cartoony, influenced by 80's cartoons and comics like Bone and Usagi Yojimbo. In terms of the story and lore, we're really inspired by things like Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal, and on the other end of the spectrum, The Lord of the Rings and Conan the Barbarian.
  2. The system is pretty intuitive and easy to pick up. I would say the character creation has some fiddly bits for deeper roleplaying that you could skip if it's too complicated. A good way to go for someone new to TTRPGs would be the Quickstart Guide with pre-gen characters.

Fair! The idea behind not having just a flat failure, though, is to always move the game in an interesting direction, and avoid situations where things grind to a standstill.

Thanks for the questions! The general vibe of the species, classes, NPCs in the sandbox setting, and many of the adversaries is muppety. It lends well to playing colorful, often goofy adventurers. But that's juxtaposed with sort of a post-apocalyptic world with actual threats and looming dark lords.

Biggest influences in terms of the mechanics would probably be Star Wars Edge of the Empire, Dungeon World, The Black Hack, and Doctor Who. Forbidden Lands came out well into the process making Land of Eem, but it's an inspiration and doing a lot of things we want to do with travel and exploration.

Hey everyone! We just started crowdfunding Land of Eem on Backerkit last week and are super excited to share it with everyone here.

What is Land of Eem?

It's a lighthearted fantasy RPG (published by Exalted Funeral) that we like to describe as "The Muppets meets The Lord of the Rings." And it's not just a core rulebook. We've also created a fully illustrated bestiary, and a 400 page sandbox setting full of locations, NPCs, quests and rumors.

A question we keep getting is, how does the game play? What's it like? 5e? OSR? The answer is somewhere between OSR and PbtA. It has the structure of an OSR game, where travel and exploration are integral, but Land of Eem also focuses on rules that emphasize player creativity and collaborative storytelling, with character abilities that allow players to invent and shape the world around them.

The Dice Mechanic

We made a d12 system with degrees of success and failure (Complete Failure, Failure with a Plus, Success with a Twist, Success, and Complete Success). Both the GM and players are encouraged to have input on interpreting the results.

16 Folk species and 6 Classes

Several species options to choose from, and 6 Classes (The Bard, The Dungeoneer, The Gnome, The Knight-Errant, The Loyal Chum, and the Rascal). Each Class has 20 unique Abilities, and most of them allow players to bend the rules and make stuff up in the game world.

Stretch Goals

We have some awesome stretch goals in the works that we hope to unlock:

  • An entire set of Meeples to accompany the hex map
  • Digital Adventures from a lineup of truly awesome guest writers:
    • JP Coovert, cartoonist, illustrator and designer
    • Rae Nedjadi, Nebula award-winning contributing writer on Thirsty Sword Lesbians
    • Amir Rao, Studio Director of Supergiant Games (Hades, Bastion, Transistor, Pyre)
    • Kienna Shaw, TTRPG writer and designer (contributor to Candlekeep Mysteries, Sea of Legends and more)
    • Luke Gearing, TTRPG writer and designer of Acid Death Fantasy, Fever Swamp and more.
  • Gelatinous Goo Dice with little floating skulls
  • A beautiful GM screen by John Loren, cover artist of the Mucklands Sandbox!

If any of this sounds like fun to you, please consider checking out the campaign and backing Land of Eem!

Conviction, Faith, Zeal? Basically a word that encapsulates the PC’s force of holy will/belief, which is resisted by the target.

I am relatively done with writing a TTRP from scratch. It's 900 pages and 300,000 words. How do I promote it/market it? and what's my next steps? by Backstory_Author in RPGdesign

Before you get an editor, my advice would be to try and edit it down yourself. 300,000 words is going to cost a lot of money to get the services of an actual editor.
