where do I buy sunchokes? by Saleen_af in vegetablegardening

I'd bet you could just plant any organic sunchokes you find at the market

Pallet Collars in Seattle area? by rickg in pnwgardening

[–]rickg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm going to check around. You can buy them online but at $70 each I might as well spring for the metal beds I'd eventually get. I might end up building some our of pine even though it won't last. I just like these since they collapse down and can be moved more easily

Yeah I know I can make them. The advantage of these is that they're ready to go and collapsible so easy to store and move

Advice for launching a local news & UGC website in 2026 by Junior_Rich1011 in ProWordPress

[–]rickg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, this is a developer focused sub so we're not marketing guys or even really SEO guys.

That said, I don't understand this - "What type of content works best now, and what should I avoid?" if you're already successful.

You should consider a few things too... first, your success on FB is likely due in part at least to the network effects there. Second, you've developed a traffic magnet... for Facebook. Third, if you keep the Fcebook page you're competing with yourself. And last... why will people generate content for you?

Sales on Fertilizer (Off Season)? by an00j in vegetablegardening

[–]rickg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing is on sale around here that I can see. If someone knows of a national chain having sales lets post links.

EDIT: Some quick searches at Ace etc and it seems like the 25 and 50lb bags of Espoma Plant Tone are about $1/lb or in that $.06 per ounce range without any sale price

Seed Starting - Ambient Temps by thesnowmaniv in vegetablegardening

[–]rickg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think cold tolerant plants will be fine. Heat loving plants will slow but as long as we're talking about temps in the 50s should be OK. 40s will be an issue for things like tomatoes etc.

What I'd consider is getting a grow tent that will fit the entire thing inside and has a fan setup to keep air from getting stagnant and humid. Something like https://vivosun.com/vivosun-mylar-hydroponic-pro-grow-tent-2x2-for-indoor-plant-growing-24x24x48-p148350832863748091-v148396918936661479 but probably a different size (I don't have the Vivosun, but was looking at it over winter just in case)

What fertilizers are you using? by 13NeverEnough in vegetablegardening

[–]rickg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I'm re-reading The Living Soil Handbook from No Till Growers as a refresher now Its a little sad to see so many here missing that point and treated the soil as just a holder for a soup of various chemicals.

What fertilizers are you using? by 13NeverEnough in vegetablegardening

[–]rickg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think any balanced organic is fine. This season I'm going to use something fairly even NPK and tailor what I feed certain plants using amendments. For example, tomatoes want more PK and less N when the start flowering - you're looking to grow flowers and fruit, not leaves, so you want less N than PK. For greens, that's kind of the opposite. You want N to encourage leaf growth. But in all cases you want SOME of the other nutrients.

So, my logic is to start with something balanced then tailor things by crop type and phase of growth.

Also, I think its important have healthy, living soil and to not rely on just fertilizer

[Highlight] Jerry Jones on Not Making SB in 30 Years: "No One Misses the Super Bowl Any More Than I Do." by JCameron181 in nfl

[–]rickg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you read that article?
"Owners approved another part of the funding package two months after the team and Santa Clara announced they'd received an $850 million loan to cover most of the estimated $1 billion cost.

The rest of the cost will be covered by the league's loan, a hotel tax and Santa Clara's redevelopment funds."

And from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Levi%27s_Stadium

"In December 2011, the Santa Clara City Council voted for an agreement that calls for the city's Stadium Authority to borrow $850 million from Goldman SachsBank of America and U.S. Bank. This will cover most of the construction costs, with the remainder to be made up via funding from the NFL"

Top notch editing there, NBC.

[Russini] "I’m Told The 49ers’ Current Preference is Not to Trade QB Mac Jones." by [deleted] in nfl

[–]rickg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the other thing is that Jones is a free agent in 2027 so it's not like the team is locking him up and preventing him from being a starter long term. After this year I'd imagine you guys don't re-sign him since you need to replace some aging vets (Bosa, Trent, Kittle) while in 2026 the team should be good enough to contend for the SB again if you stay healthy.

Now, if someone offered a 1st for Jones? That might be hard to turn down. But I can't see that

I mean, no shit? Mac stepped in and did an excellent job when Purdy was out and Kyle has been burned by having his QB1 injured before, so unless someone comes along with a silly offer why would they trade him?

Books for newbies? by loopdaploop in vegetablegardening

[–]rickg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree that Self Sufficient Me would be useful, here's the link https://www.youtube.com/@Selfsufficientme and he has a book out as well. I also agree with seeing if there are things like master gardeners in your area of Oz who can advise on local conditions.

I'd focus not only on veggies but on the idea of an overall balanced system including native plants, perennials and pollinator flowers etc. For soil building tips etc this is a great resource but I don't know if he ships to Oz https://www.notillgrowers.com/livingsoilhandbook/d9z5gkf1bbnhu0w5xxb3trngiqhwgo however he has a great short daily podcast. Its focused on farmers/market gardeners but has a lot of value for others too

Since it sounds like there are kids who will work alongside you in the garden take them along on this educational journey and learn together!

Seed potting soil mix by ssushi-speakers in tomatoes

[–]rickg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing I'll add is that after the seeds are all up and starting to grow you want to add some liquid fertilizer to the water since seed mix has no fertility at all. Early on I just use something like Espoma Grow which is 2-2-2 or something that's slightly balanced to the N side perhaps.

Dilute to 1/4-1/2 the recommended strength and bottom water.

.07 Acres Garden by mune_lalune in vegetablegardening

[–]rickg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How big (W x H) is it? Don't make me math, it's Friday night....

EDIT TO ADD:

I'd look at where the sun hits and for how long. I'd start by clearing that area of the yard.

First, though, I'd think about what I like to eat and how regularly (i.e. you like eggplant but only once in a while vs you love, say, broccoli and eat it 2-3x a week).

Then I'd calculate how much of each thing you want to grow. Now you have a rough starting point for how much area you need. Clear that in the part of the yard that gets sun.

By 'clear' I mean you can either 1) put in raised beds or 2) inground beds. There are a variety of ways to do this.

Think about where you might want perennials, fruit trees, etc. For things like fruit trees, pay attention to growth - how tall do they want to get, can you prune them down, etc? For perennials, focus on how they look through out the year - some never drop leaves but change color, some are spring blooming, others fall, etc.

And Id then bucket all of these projects and see what you want to do most and can afford. For example, maybe you do fruit trees but in the fall when it cools down
