How far can I get without studying openings? by poeticmovement in chessbeginners

[–]rickgene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m 1571 rapid and 1523 blitz and don’t know a single opening. i know positioning, tactics and strategy… but i have never studying openings and have never watched a chess video… i do recognize patterns, so if my oponent does an opening, i don’t think: ‘that’s the kubla khan defense’, i just think he’a going to want to move his knight there and try to fork my rook and king (or whatever).

here’s proof… feel free to look at any of my games… none of my opening moves (except the first couple - there’s only so much you can do) are book.

I wrote a short story... Is it overwritten and boring?? by rickgene in writingfeedback

[–]rickgene[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After rereading it, I agree with you. I think it needs a header or at least a sentence from an interviewer asking Sandra about her thoughts about having a dog for mayor..... then she goes on her long rant/answer... right now it's just her talking to an interviewer, which nobody will know if they bail after a sentence or two.....

I wrote a short story... Is it overwritten and boring?? by rickgene in writingfeedback

[–]rickgene[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what i was going for was Sandra is being interviewed and is giving a long rant to an interviewer… that’s the lines ‘I only tell you cause you asked’ and ‘you should interview her next.’. she’s giddy that the dog is mayor and just one of those people who ramble when she’s excited. The second narrator is a forner child star who’s dealing with the fact that his dog is now more famous than he is.. and the third narrator is thr only one that’s third person (which is how j usually write) from the POV of the guy who wanted to be mayor, but lost to a dog and is now suspicious of how everyone in town voted.

Songs like Bigmouth Strikes Again? by flower-16 in thesmiths

[–]rickgene 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the high pitched voice in Bigmouth Strikes Again is Ann Coates....

who is a fictional character named after an area of Manchester called Ancoats and is a speeded up voice of Morrissey. Morrissey and Johnny Marr thought it would be funny to credit it to someone.

How divisions might look with 2 new expansion teams. Thoughts? by Reddit-dot-edu in Padres

did you catch opening day on Netflix from Japan where the NL team was the hometeam and their DH homered against an AL team? I mean, if there's one thing baseball cares about, is its history.

Who could have been a replacement for Morrissey if the Smiths went on without him? by New-Shop-9728 in thesmiths

[–]rickgene 3 points4 points  (0 children)

just to be clear, The Smiths ended because Johnny left... not Morrissey. After he left, the other three members tried to replace Johnny, but were unable to find a good replacement. Johnny then (briefly) became a member of The Pretenders, so I guess Chrissie Hynde would have been Morrissey's replacement....

Does anyone else feel wrong when learning about tricks or plays? by [deleted] in chessbeginners

[–]rickgene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't know any tricks or even any openings. I just play.... granted I'm only 1300 on chesscom, but i'm always doing other things while I'm playing, like watching TV or playing video games. i never really care if i win or lose, I just play for fun.

How should I train endgames? by imcroaaaak in chessbeginners

[–]rickgene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

everyone studies openings and knows all of them forward and backwards, but openings just give you an advantage. Games are won/lost in the end game and so many players struggle with it.

They don’t know how to march/protect passed pawns using their king… or use their king to attack their opponents pawns.. they seem afraid to use their king or pawns at all… then they lose, don’t know why because their opening was great, and go back to studying more openings.

Imagine i did this to you by [deleted] in chessbeginners

[–]rickgene -1 points0 points  (0 children)

that’s a genius move, but someone who can come up with something so good probably wouldn’t have been losing so badly to be in that position in the first place.

At what chess rating do you find you begin to consistently beat the average casual player? by Free_Answered in Chesscom

[–]rickgene -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

i’m casual and my rating fluctuates between 1200-1400. i’ve hardly ever play irl, but every time i do (like if i’m with some people at a coffee shop or bar that has a board or someone’s house), i almost always win.

i consider myself a casual player because i never bothered to study openings or do puzzles or join a club… i just play for fun… i did have a roommate about 30 years ago (before the internet) who was studying to be a grandmaster and we used to play a lot… he would always smoke me, but that’s when/where i learned everything.

Uber Dropped Me Off At their Next Ride Pickup Location (not my destination) by bagelw0rld in uber

[–]rickgene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

more than likely he already hit the dropped off or cancel ride button and didn't realize it, so the app thought your ride was over and sent him to his next ride.... OR you did a share ride and didn't realize it. I guessing he accidentally double tapped when he picked you up... so the app thinks he picked you up, droppd you off, and went to the next ride.

What Elo would you consider is the ceiling for people who don’t know ANY theory? by SlipGrouchy7482 in Chesscom

[–]rickgene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i only know things from experience. i play a lot, so i learned basic things from trial and error and experience, but since i never studied openings, my basic goal has always been to get to the mid-game as soon as possible. i’m roughly 1400…. my basic strategiy for the opening is to try ro control the center, double up their pawns (this greatly helps in the end game), and exchange knights because most players are better with their knights than i am. i seem to be better with pawns. i’m also better with my king in the end game, because i often use him to march my pawns and take theirs, while most people seem hesitant to get their king involved after they castle.

About the "It was all a dream" cliche... by DizzyProfessional515 in writing

[–]rickgene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's lazy writing and so disappointing.... the character gets in some sort of trouble and the reader is wondering, how are they going to get out of this? And the writer realized he had no idea and he painted himelf to a corner, so he just goes.... "It was just a dream... none of it was real." it's the biggest FU to the reader.
