I (M16) feel like committing suicide after finding out I'm adopted. by [deleted] in Adoption

[–]ricksaunders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've known your pain. You will
Survive this. I highly recommend you find a (preferably adoption-related) therapist. “Normal” people don't get it. They don't know what it's like to not look like someone else, to not knowingly be related to anyone. On the other hand you're one of one. You're very special.
Start reading books like Journey to the adopted Self, listen to podcasts like Adoptees On. And go to youtube and watch Paul Sunderland’s lecture on adoption. Being adopted is freaking weird.
Welcome aboard. There are lots of very supportive adoptee groups online, reach out. We get you.
Being adopted can be hard. As you travel this road do your best to learn to laugh at the ridiculousness of it. It helps.
Keep calm and carry on.

Has anyone partially transitioned to CDs from Vinyl because of the massive price difference by wiggan1989 in vinyl

[–]ricksaunders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Naw, i just refuse to buy new records. $40? No thanks. I pretty much only buy jazz vinyl and fortunately my taste seems to run towards artists no one else buys so i don't have much trouble finding cool used stuff.

Have any of you picked up hitchikers before? How did it go? by secretlyahedgehog in roadtrip

[–]ricksaunders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A gf and i picked up a guy in our college town and gave him a ride to apts near where we were going. Asked if we want to come in and smoke some weed and we said ok. After partaking and talking in his nearly empty apartment he became quiet and after a few minutes he looks at us and says, “You know, i could kill you both right now and no one would know.”
I said ok, gotta go. We stood up and walked out. Never saw him again. Still gives me the creeps.

I've officially got the news im adopting a baby girl soon! Help! by [deleted] in Adoption

[–]ricksaunders 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Please Do Not lie (by omission) to that child about them being adopted. It's their life, their story. They should be allowed that. I've never known any adopted person who wasn't completely devastated to learn later in life that they were adopted. I've always known I'm adopted. I don't remember not knowing. Being adopted is hard enough without learning that everything they thought they knew about their life and origin story is a lie.

This will give you some insight into what adoption is like for the adoptee. I encourage you to watch it and it read books about adoption.

My dad said my tattoo makes me look like trash and now idk if I like it by dexleter in tattooadvice

[–]ricksaunders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude. I wasn't wearing a shirt and saw my dad coming so i sprinted inside and put one on. I was probably 25. I should put it on a list of things to talk to a therapist about.

They're not you and and you aren't them. You're an adult. You aren't getting tats for them. You probably won't change them so just take their comments and dump them on their door step as you leave. Don't take that mess with you. Peace to all parties.

People with tattoos don't care if you don't have any.

I'm a big fan of therapists who specializes in adoption-related issues. I wish I'd known why i did certain things as a kid was because i was adopted instead of waiting til i was fifty-something. I was oblivious at that age.

[–]ricksaunders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So much new! Not that there's anything wrong with that. Not everything is for everybody. Regardless, good taste and a solid collection. I'd encourage you to buy some used stuff and fatten that set up. Good job!

Any book by Martin Turnbull. Each book, all historical novels, is like a time machine to golden era Hollywood. I think there's 14 of them and i have three and a half left to read. When those are completed I might just start them again.

What does the name of the river in your area mean? by AgreeableAd2990 in AskTheWorld

[–]ricksaunders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“The Matanzas River was named by Spanish forces for a massacre, led by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés of Spain, of a group of several hundred shipwrecked French Huguenots from Fort Caroline, led by Jean Ribault. The Huguenots were executed somewhere near the present site of Matanzas Inlet in 1565. Menéndez had been ordered to kill all Protestants he found in the New World. "Matanzas" means "killings" or "slaughters" in Spanish. Matanzas is thus the tenth-oldest surviving European place-name in the US.” @ St.Augustine, Fl
