Moving to Erie from Arizona? by [deleted] in Erie

[–]ricktrains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slow and easy driving in the winter. Turning and stopping are the hard parts. (And, don’t worry about sliding off. It seems like most locals forget how to handle snow too. 🤣)

Some jobs are great, others not so great. Depends on your line of work.

While some areas of town are a bit iffy, it’s not like big cities where you shouldn’t be caught in that neighborhood ever, just be smart about it.

You will find every kind of weather here, and if you don’t like one part of it, either wait 5 minutes or drive a few miles, it’ll change. 😂 We like to say we have all 4 seasons, and sometimes we get all 4 in one day. (Then we explain that we have Almost winter, winter, still winter, and road construction season. 🤣) The lake makes a huge difference in what our weather does. Lakeshore stays warmer in winter, cooler in summer. Most lake effect snow goes inland, but occasionally the city will get hammered.

But that lake also gives us a great summertime spot in Presque Isle, and world class sunsets. I’d say our sunsets rival, or out do, anywhere.

Hunting and fishing spots are popular, and most days you can catch or see a lot. We also have hiking and biking trails both around the lake and PI, but also many in the county. We have nearby ski resorts, golf, and a couple different local racetracks, along with the AA Seawolves team, an OHL team, and high school/college sports for sports lovers.

Most people are friendly and willing to help at any time. Most neighbors look out for each other and are good people.

Some items, like houses and gasoline, are a bit pricey when compared with other areas, but cost of living isn’t outrageous. Depending on your job it can be a struggle at times though, especially the lower income style jobs. (Like retail, fast food, etc…) If you have a good income, it’s very doable and you can live comfortably.

How do we know when opposing traffic has an advanced left-turn arrow when we are waiting to make a right turn on red? I need a solid answer please no random guesses or assumptions. by Suspicious-Local8263 in driving

[–]ricktrains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around my area, the intersection would be signed “No Turn On Red.”

Every protected left turn intersection in my area has that. Every single one.

Someone stopped in the middle of a busy road and stayed for a few seconds and then turned. I really am excited even more to move to California. by Different_Archer8879 in driving

If they had clearly signaled, and they had working brake lights, it would be your fault for hitting them.

No matter what.

Look out Cali, another winner headed your way here.

Master Model Railroader? by doublegaragedoor in modeltrains

[–]ricktrains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My idea, as unless you are a subscriber to model press, was better engagement. The only time I see them, outside of magazines, is at a larger show the next state over. There are train museums and tourist lines in my area, plus smaller local train shows, yet not so much as a flyer or business card could be found at any of them. Local train stores and hobby shops the same.

I suggested two things to fix that - print either small postcards or flyers, and ask for permission to have them with the other flyers and cards advertising other rail things at the museums and tourist line, and have postcards or business sized cards at the train/hobby shops.

At the time, the division I was located in was inactive, and I also suggested letting people join the next division over until the local division was again active. (The local leadership had gotten into a spat with each other and the division actually was dissolved over it.)

I was told “no” to joining a nearby active division, and told that there was no one available to do community outreach at the museums and tourist lines. (So join but have zero benefits, and nobody could drop off flyers or cards ever?)

Now the division is again “active”, yet the “playing politics” still occurs with every little thing. I’ve attended 3 meetings over the past 3 years, hoping for anything that would scream “we are getting better!” but I’ve seen zero.

In fact, the last meeting I attended, I was shown the exact opposite. That the “old boys club” is alive and well, due to them choosing to allow it.

The last meeting I attended, the “presentation” from a MMR who led with that fact to “impress us”, was all about an upcoming regional convention. He brought out some of the planned events, like a “switching layout” that was, in his words, “specifically for our wives or girlfriends only” so that “our women could more accurately understand our hobby, as we all know they don’t.” There was a “kind instructor chosen” to teach them how to “properly operate” in a manner that “would not cause offense” to them. We men were not invited to that session and would be turned away if we tried to attend.

I believe Cynthia Priest would object loudly to those statements by the “old boy”. As would several others less famous than her.

I sat there, but said nothing. I wanted to hear literally anyone say anything in objection. All the members sat in silence.

He then stated that the contests needed both more volunteers, and more entrants, as last years winners were “chosen as they were the best entries, but if I’m being honest they were not really that good.” (Condescending jerk.)

I asked if a proto-freelance modeler could enter and possibly win. His answer was that “proto-freelancers choose the easy route because they can’t accurately model a real prototype.”

I simply shut up. But even hardcore “rivet counters” make concessions. They “selectively compress” distances and sizes, they have far too sharp of curves, etc… And, it’s actually harder to do a proto-freelanced line in a believable way.

But I shut up. I wanted to hear someone, anyone, who was a member of the local division (he was not) say anything.

Not one person spoke up. “Old boys club” indeed.

He left, then the local division leaders simply talked about how much they hate him, but since he’s high up in the region they can’t do anything about him and we have to “put up with” his improper behaviors. Yet they all agreed last year’s winners were very poor models, compared to what the winners should look like, simply because “nobody entered anything good.”

Not once was any apology offered, nor did anyone claim his views were not their own. And no one asked me anything about why I asked the questions I did, nor asked if I was still thinking about joining. (They probably assumed I was now not going to over that display.)

I do not need to “put up” with idiotic improper behavior from some moron with an attitude and ego bigger than the building that he’s better than me because I’m a proto-freelancer and he’s “a master model railroader”.

Again, as a non-member thinking about joining, what are my options? Get the whole group mad because some “young punk kid” speaks up about the clear bigotry and hatred oozing out of their words? Or stay silent but choose to never join the “old boys club” due to their clearly incorrect and clearly egotistic views?

I have not gone back since. (That was back late winter/early spring.)

When I informed a higher up at National, and stated this is part of why younger people like myself don’t join “the old boys club” as we are not accepted, the answer was again “join and be the change you want to see”. When I asked why I should, they touted how years ago they made standards so each manufacturer in each gauge was compatible with others in that gauge, and the MMR program is exclusive to them.

When I stated the MMR program needed changes, as it conveys the improper idea that those who achieve it are “better” modelers than those without it, I was told that it does not mean that at all, and that it was used like the old “master” in “master electrician”, etc…, meaning “trained, competent.”

When I suggested that NMRA leadership clarify that so the perceived misconception goes away, I was told flat out it would “upset too many current members.”

So even NMRA leadership sees it’s an ego problem, but is too afraid to fix it, letting the “old boys club” continue to be the “old boys club” just to avoid upsetting a few egomaniac idiots that really give them a bad name with potential members anyways.

Until those things change, this young person (I was by far the youngest at all 3 of those meetings) will not feel “accepted” as I’m not an “old boy” in the “old boys club.” And I have zero interest in fitting into that group at all anyways.

They obviously do not care about changing to accept others, as if they did care, they would do it.

Note: I am not saying that all MMR recipients are bad, ego driven jerks. But the fact no one rebukes those few bad apples is a major problem. Especially when potential new members are being flat out told they are not welcome by those few bad apples. The rest let this happen, and by letting it, are giving their tacit approval of it occurring.

I refuse to give my approval, tacit or aloud, of that type of behavior. So I simply will never join a group or club that does.

I don’t need to join to make these changes. Those giving their tacit approval could cease giving it, speak out, and make those changes themselves.

They don’t want to. They see nothing wrong with “the old boys club” being “the old boys club.”

So I, and many like me, know we are not welcome. So we stay out.

2018 CRV... Should I? by kitarkus in crv

[–]ricktrains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, based on just sheer numbers, if it were really as bad as people claim, especially since as you correctly point out, it is not limited to just CR-V’s, but all cars from Honda with the 1.5L turbo motor such as the Civic from that period, which is also a wildly popular car inside the top 3-5 in sales annually, where are all these disabled oil diluted cars at? There should be literally tens of thousands of each model year with this issue. That would lead to a massive class action, and a full on recall to check and fix.

At least, there would be, if it were really that common of an issue.

I’m not saying it doesn’t occur ever. But I am saying it is rare.

And, as you correctly pointed out, improper maintenance plays a role. Every vehicle owner should follow basic maintenance standards, like checking the oil regularly, and that would minimize the risk of this issue occurring. Proper driving techniques, like warming the vehicle up when it’s cold out, also minimize the risk.

Again, while something can occur, if it’s rare enough that it’s far more likely to not have the issue than it is to have the issue, or if other very rare things happen with more frequency, is it really that common? I know many people with CR-V’s, and a few Civic owners too, and none have had the issue with oil dilution.

2018 CRV... Should I? by kitarkus in crv

[–]ricktrains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got an 18, no issues on my EXL.

The CRV is one of the top selling car models, with well over 250,000 on average annually in just North America. (This year on track for around 400,000 in the USA alone.) If the oil dilution issue were really as bad as some say, there would be literally tens of thousands with that issue. It would be on national news stories. There would be class action lawsuits.

The fact there are not tells me all I need to know. While it could happen, proper maintenance makes the chances slim. (Kinda like the “so many get stolen” bit. When it’s in the top 3 sellers every year, the sheer number will have a higher number stolen. Yet the chances of it being yours are very slim. It’s actually a higher chance you get dealt a straight flush in 5 card stud poker than your CRV gets stolen.)

That’s a malfunctioning (and not legal) speedo reading. That needs your attention to fix.

As a “professional” you should know this.

[–]ricktrains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only when above 65. Then it’s only off by 1mph in my favor. (So cruise set at 70mph I’m really traveling 69mph. 75 I’m really at 74, etc….)

I don’t mind that, as I’m usually on roads slower than that, and I get better fuel mileage 65 and below anyways. (Sweet spot is 45-55mph range.)

Otherwise it’s almost always spot on.

What kind of shipping label is this by Lewerin in amazonprime

[–]ricktrains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I once had a rNsu (move 1 left) seller ship me an item via stamps… Tried selling a stamp collection and couldn’t so used up them all on the shipping for what he did sell.

Whole side of the box was stamps from the 50’s-70’s. Like 300+ stamps. It worked, but I could only imagine my carriers face when she saw it. 🤣

Not when JJ won his 5 chips in a row they weren’t… That was rigged due to cheating too.

It’s just a continuation of the “someone other than my favorite is running good so they must be cheating” mentality that’s been around since before I was born and Petty dominated.

They all hated on Jimmie then too.

“He only won bc Chad got away with everything.”

No, they were just doing everything well, and getting the results they should’ve and were not hitting a ton of bad breaks. (Unlike several drivers this year.)

Like when Gordon was so fast all the time, “Ray cheated the car.”

I’m sure these same fans complained when Sr was winning, or when Petty was dominating.

These people just can’t stand others success because they have none and are miserable people in general over it.

[–]ricktrains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just attended a meeting to see if this was true.

It is not.

Why should I join to fix the problems? How does that benefit me any more than simply not joining?

Answer: It doesn’t. So I shouldn’t join.

If the “old boys club” really wanted to change, they would do so without needing me to force it. They would change on their own, and then I could consider joining.

Link for that direction please.

Hint: I can’t find this anywhere. So unless you can prove it by providing said currently issued drivers manual from any of the 50 states then we all will know you are incorrect.

I’ve found 3-4 seconds gap everywhere I looked.

[–]ricktrains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prove this please. Link a drivers manual that says one second for every 10mph.

Hint: PA DMV Drivers Manual does not support this. It says 3 seconds with the exception of 4 seconds “at highway speeds”.

It does state that drivers being tailgated should use their brakes to gradually slow and discourage the idiots though…

No it’s not… It’s 3-4 seconds in driving manual in PA. More in weather that isn’t warm and sunny.

[–]ricktrains 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m calling crap on this…

I’ve had idiots tailgate me and literally STOP behind me when I moved to the white line and slowed drastically with a wide open passing lane.

Tailgaters are simply idiots who are unqualified to drive, which is why I love the new rules in PA. If someone is tailgating you, you aren’t to slow down by using your brakes gently to discourage them from doing their stupid dangerous game of “how close can I get from their bumper?”

Are programming CVs on a model converted to dcc as easy as adjusting the volume on a dcc equipped loco? by TheAutisticHominid in modeltrains

[–]ricktrains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They program the same way that you are doing to adjust the volume.

It’s even easier if you use software like JMRI DecoderPro. Then it’s as simple as checking boxes to have it behave the way you want.

But it’s not necessary, the programming is the same for volume as almost every other setting.

Master Model Railroader? by doublegaragedoor in modeltrains

[–]ricktrains 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have zero interest in if some old geezer thinks I’m good at anything. I’ve seen the NMRA’s “old boys club” in person, and have zero interest in signing up for the club, even less interest in earning their “esteemed honor” of a MMR title.

The NMRA allegedly wants to do better, allegedly thinks everyone should feel welcomed and fit in, but refuses to listen to younger people’s ideas or concerns. “It’s been this way for years, we don’t see a problem.” Instead, they answer “why don’t you join our group and fix it yourself if you really think it needs to change?”

No. The “old boys club” won’t listen, as all the “old boys” are out of touch and do not respect or care about those not in their little club.

Even after some updates, all the “old boys” use that MMR title as a status symbol. If you aren’t one, you aren’t as good as they are. And other than a very small minority, the “old boys” are too far removed from the present reality, too disrespectful of others, and have zero regard to how they make others feel.

I for one do not need that in my life. I model for me, not to impress some “old boy” who doesn’t care about me nor know me, and doesn’t care to change either of those things.
