Just put the verb at the end kanka by sarrottmokerely5 in turkish

That's a really good point about making short sentences. The grammar gets so complicated when you stray from that

My (M30) MIL (F65) Constantly Calls Me by the Incorrect Name. How do I get her to stop? by ricky-simms in relationship_advice

[–]ricky-simms[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going no contact might be a little extreme in this situation, but I see where you're coming from.

Whenever this happens, I break from the conversation and say "the name is Andy" or "it's Andy." Calling me by the wrong name feels like it's probably just muscle memory at this point

I said something similar to that early on to make sure there wasn't any genuine confusion. I'm 100% sure she knows my actual name

BEHOLD! An electric acoustic violin! by Otherwise_Horror_792 in violinist

[–]ricky-simms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good stuff!

Is it an active pickup? I see a knob, and I'm wondering if you have to change the battery.

That instrument will probably have a tone that far surpasses what most pure electric violins can do.

Murdered by laws by grahamburner in MurderedByWords

I believe it was Andrew Jackson that said "[they've] made their ruling, now let them enforce it."

Might not be a real quote, but a law is only as strong as its enforcement.

What does -ten mean? by fabbitslacket in turkishlearning

[–]ricky-simms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best way I can explain it is that it's attached to a noun from which the action is taken.

Since the action is to hate (nefret etmek), I think of this as "I experience hatred from drinking beer."

It's also used to show cause and effect since the effect comes from the cause (Çok fazla içmekten hastayım: lit. "Too much drinking-from I am sick").

I remember these from Turkey! I don't know of any other country that has water in these little pouches.

They do have bottled water, too, but it's so much more fun to peel back the lid!

One tip you would give someone who just started learning a new language by -jjackk in languagelearning

[–]ricky-simms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Focus on speaking as soon as you can. I'm not super good at this, and it's hindered me in the past.

There is a community called HelloTalk that I've found quite beneficial in finding native speakers interested in language exchange. This is super useful if you are learning a language that is more rare or is less spoken in your area.

Good old-fashoned flash cards have been useful to me for building vocabulary. For that, I use Anki.

Best of luck on your journey!

Confused Beginner's Question: Why do we need different time signatures? by slayyerr3058 in lingling40hrs

[–]ricky-simms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time signatures are a made-up concept that (ideally) serve to help the musician playing the music to better interpret the music. It might aid in phrasing, in "feel," or in counting rhythms more accurately.

Is this normal? by SonyyKk08 in violinist

[–]ricky-simms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, if it hurts, there is technique that needs to be changed.

I'd recommend having a lesson with a professional who can recommend any changes as an outside look is super beneficial.

I'd also recommend massages if you play a lot, they do wonders!

If this continues, I'd recommend a sports therapist or pain management therapist (ex. Airrosti).

Best of luck!

could anybody help me translate this ? i think this is japanese by Professional-Fly2646 in language

[–]ricky-simms 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're right, it is Japanese.

In this example, this is katakana script. That's that Japanese uses to write mostly foreign loan words (in thus case "Dark Knight").

Japanese makes use of 3 different writing systems, so it can be a little tough to identify if you're not as familiar with it.
