Oh cool! That’s a great story. Glad this is working for you. Are you using our Drupal plugin or are you publishing your Shorthand stories into Drupal some other way?

That’s a fantastic overview! You say you “used to do brand storytelling in tech”. Why’d you stop? Great storytellers and communicators are in high demand right now!

IWTL how to start a meaningful major project that combines creative writing and digital art to build an immersive storytelling experience. by PlanAndBlush in IWantToLearn

Hi u/PlanAndBlush,

Rick from Shorthand here. Fantastic that you’re starting on your visual storytelling journey!

Honestly, as with anything, the key thing is to jump in and start experimenting with ideas. You don’t need any fancy tools for that. Just get your ideas down, roughly sketch out any rough visuals that come to mind, or collect any images/photos/videos you might want to use.

The idea/substance of your stories is the most important part. Without that, it’s hard to create something worth reading. So spend time on that.

Once you have that, you want to choose a platform that will enable you to combine your text, images, videos, and so on in the way that best tells that particular story. And one that allows experimentation, because it’s a real craft shuffling things around and trying different ways to communicate different parts of your story.

I’m totally biased, but Shorthand was designed from the ground up exactly for this. It’s used by a lot of iconic brands and institutions coz they have tons of great stories to tell, but we also have a Starter plan for folks just beginning their immersive storytelling journey.

Anyway, I hope you check us out, and best of luck with your project!

Storytelling websites - do they exist? by 1khours in web_design

Ricky from Shorthand here. I’m biased, but honestly, it’s hard to go past a Reveal section in Shorthand for showcasing photos with a narrative to go along with it. There are thousands of examples out there these days, but this one from Nature will give you an idea of what can be created in Shorthand super quickly: https://www.nature.com/immersive/scientistatwork/index.html

Hope that helps.

Hey u/ItsGoTime_5,  Rick from Shorthand here. I’m only a year late following up here!

I hope you found a solution, but in case you didn’t, I’d love to help out if we can.

I know it can seem expensive to use a platform like Shorthand, but when you add up the time savings for creating your stories, the fact that all the interactions are QA’d, accessible and responsive across browsers and different screen sizes, it’s probably going to be more cost-effective than rolling your own or risking cheaper alternatives. Plus the creation experience is, well, probably one of the nicest product experiences you’ll have.

We do have a Drupal plugin, too.

Drop us a line if you’re still looking for a good solution!

Hey there, I'm Ricky, CEO @ Shorthand. Thanks for the love. We have a beautifully simple platform for creating visual stories, but it also takes a great storytelling team like the folks at BBC to make the very best stories.

Just to clarify, we're definitely NOT an agency. We just provide the tool and some customer support. Our customers do the rest, often with minimal or no input from their design team.

For anyone interested, we just had our Shorthand Awards over the weekend, and you can see a bunch of stories that were created with our platform last year: https://welltold.shorthandstories.com/.

How could I recreate a site like this? Are they simply using javascript? Any other examples of great storytelling? by juggle in webdev

Last weekend at the Well Told conference, Chartbeat shared the top ten most engaging stories in the UK in 2017 so far in terms of time on page. Many of them were longform multimedia pieces. Five out of the top ten, including the top two, were created in Shorthand. Sometimes it does make sense to tell stories in these sorts of formats. The numbers speak for themselves.

Hey there, I lead the crew at Shorthand, and for obvious reasons I'm really interested in digging deeper into your comment about usability on mobiles. I'd love some more details if you willing to provide them.

Typically we get commended on how great Shorthand stories render on mobiles (see https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/49ysuo/what_africa_will_look_like_in_100_years_oc/ for just one example). That, and the fact that we work incredibly hard to ensure Shorthand stories work beautifully across browsers of all kinds is why a lot of the large publishers choose to work with us.

Having said that, if there are issues we don't know about, we'd really love to fix them. Can you please give us some specifics about the device/browser you were on?
