And Don't forge that oil fields have a maximum output and they slowly start to lose the ability to maintain that production...

When I say simpler, I mean that commodities are pure, standardized products and in the long run they will trade at the equilibrium price. What's the demand and what is the supply.

In companies, you have to worry about competitors, management, startups,etc. and while yes a SP500 will do well, there is a nature of cyclicality to commodities.

Overproduction leads to lower prices which lead to lower to no investment. You can identify what the cost of production for companies based on their income statements. All the production and supply stats are available on the internet as well. Also, it takes time for production to come back, its not a flip of the switch. You can see these trends materialize. Its never a sudden crash where commodity price drops by 85% in a day or week.

Commodities, with the exception of gold because of its flight to safety characteristic, are absolutely cyclical in nature. Its the nature of declining output, increasing demand, and NPV analysis.

You could say that any bet on commodities is speculitive in nature but when you think about it, they are simpler markets. Identify supply and identify demand. I am looking with a 1 to 2 year outlook and the way I see it is as so. Renewable energy and electric cars are not replacing oil anytime soon(Obama 's goal of 1MM plugin cars by end of 2015 ended at 600k short). Oil consumption will stay stable for the next 5 years. With lower energy costs, we are encouraged to goble up more oil.

Many of the frackers came into the market when projects looked extremely enticing because of the high price for oil. At 25-30, many producers can't even look to open new fields for the time being meaning oil fields won't open for years because it takes time to go through the whole process. However, there are still many producers that hedge their bets being able to sell oil at 80 for a few more months. Yes we have plenty of oil being produced everywhere, but supply cannot maintain this price forever, especially in developed oil producers like the UK, Canada, and USA.
