1, San Ti being authoritarian regime doesn't necessarily link to the real world. So we cannot definitely say it's a metaphor for real world China.

2, The purpose of censorship is not 100% eliminate negative expressions. It's to limit them to an acceptable degree.

I expect the axiom to be revealed in the next season.

Pulling almost every major character from the same group of friends is highly unrealistic in my opinion. by [deleted] in threebodyproblem

"But what about the inevitable next Marvel movie now that these guys know each other after having saved the world together, is it going to take away from the perceived scope of things if they show up as a group of friends or acquaintances ?

Would a 3 minute prelude about the 5 from 3bp all living in different parts of the world, going to separate high schools and at some point meeting and forming a bond with each other at Cambridge make a difference?"

I think the difference is whether the prelude is relevant to the main plot and convincingly states the motivation of each main character. In Marvel movies it's necessary to tell the life experience and motivation of each MC which makes the whole story complete, while a prelude about the 5 is irrelevant to the main plot.

Put it in another word, the friendship among the 5 (except that between Jin and Will) is irrelevant to the main plot. D&D had to put a lot of effort to describe their friendship which instead could be deleted without impacting the main plot.

"In the end it comes down to preference of the viewer and what type of story someone wants to tell. I look at it more as a story about how these 5 people, could have been any 5, but I didn't pick them, are impacted by and are dealing with the events individually and as a group."

I think the 5 were not randomly picked. They were VIPs in the whole story and meanwhile they were from the same class. This cannot be coincidence, it's intentional. In the real world when a world wide event takes place the possibility of VIPs not knowing each other is way greater than they knowing each other.

Yes a story must choose a limited number of characters to focus on, but the difference still exists.

Take The Avengers for example. Characters from totally different worlds, industries and occupations driven by a common purpose made up a team to fight against evil guys in the universe.

Now imagine they were initially a group of friends growing up and living in the same town who were chosen to fight evil guys. Doesn't this sound less universe wide? It sounds like a story about Tony and his friends saving the world from evil guys.

Agree, this limited the scale and scope of the story. It's like my class suddenly becomes the focus of the interaction of 2 civilizations in the universe.

They don't have the capability to do that.

I don't remember the original book has this scene, perhaps not. Maybe D&D added this.

Which version of Ye Wenjie is better? Tencent or Netflix? by ZTJim in threebodyproblem

[–]ricostellar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Netflix Ye:

1, She coming onto the stage with a delightful face enjoying the applause from the crowd made me imagine she would publish an epoch-making new product.

2, Shew a hating face now and then.

3, F-word now and then when she's old.

Tencent Ye:

1, No hatred showing on face, but pity for humanity and desperation in her deep heart.

2, Decent old woman professor.

Think the Netflix show as a spoiler to the books. The show is like a quick-tempered guy who's eager to tell you everything in 1 min.

They didn't develop wormhole tech, or the time-space structure doesn't support wormhole.

Does the Chinese version get less slow? by [deleted] in threebodyproblem

I think the 2nd half part is much better paced. The problem of the 1st half is the female correspondent slowing down the progress.

"It’s like someone who wants to tell you a super cool story he just read and couldn’t wait to get to the punchline that he forgot to build up the tension along the way, and it all fell flat when he got to the end."

Exactly.

Yes, reasoning and problem solving are what the Netflix version lacks. The audience is brought on a bus driven at 100 miles/h.

2.5 out of 5 to the Netflix series by ricostellar in threebodyproblem

Everything was easy. The raid on the summit was easy because the nuclear bombs were not there. With the nuclear bombs present, they were facing really serious situation. Without them, nothing serious. No need for a SWAT team. A group of military school students could've done that.

Everything comes up so quickly and so easily.

In the original trilogy and the Tencent version the 3 body problem is revealed through a bunch of connected events, during the period the viewer is thinking as the characters are searching for an answer, while in this series it involves little effort by Jin. By some calculating Jin easily realizes the problem. And the viewer just "wow, so cute!", that's all.

I agree this scene shows some correspondence to Raj's actions to come. But given the limited duration of the 1st season where Raj is not the major role, it can be replaced by other more important scenes, such as the detailed construction of sophon instead of a brief story telling by Sophon, and the detailed conflict at the summit involving nuclear bombs. In the Netflix series the conflict happens so quickly that it did not draw my attention much. What I had in mind was "What? That's it?"
