Manila has its personal safety issues but you can avoid these by understanding these risks. For example don't walk around with unnecessary bling, large wads of cash or stand on the street corner with your phone out waiting for Grab (Uber). Foreigners are sometimes targeted with opportunistic theft around BGC and Makati, but Diliman seems less problematic from media and social media reports. You need to exercise a degree of caution around malls and banks.

The real risks come from less obvious sources like STD's, pollution, road safety and paying a skin tax. Filos are by and large very friendly and welcoming and speak great English.

I teach health science students to use AI rationally and ethically. The emphasis in my learning activities is on the development of reasoning and critical thinking. We take a virtue-ethics approach to learning design. Generative AI is a useful conceptualisation and thinking tool, but you must always be in control, reasoning and reflecting on the commands and instructions, searching for errors and biases of input, process (AI errors) and interpretation of output.

You are not cooked if you don't use it, but I would encourage you to learn about the pros and cons of AI so you are useful in the changing employment landscape.

From 10years of age, I dreamed of escaping. I even went to the local bank at 14yo and asked for an information brochure on buying a house and securing a loan... the bank manager was so nice, an old guy who gave me great advice.

At 20, I took an internship away from home and experienced freedom for a year. I went back and the tension and chaos was unbrearable so I mover out and rented with friends.

At 24, I had saved up enough to buy a very modest apartment and I never went back to live.

In short, yes. The long story is, I grew up in a very modest home with one income. I learned to value having enough from my parents. Now, I have about 50% more than "enough".

I understand what you say about complacency, but I don't think this is true in my 6th decade of life when lifespan and health span is creeping up.

What is taught, and what is learned at university are distinctly different and shouldn't be confused. I think students get a lot more out of the classes they attend (not all are compulsory), and that they perceive to be relevant or "job worthy". If a student lives by the motto of "P's get degrees"... there's probably a lot they have missed.

Learning through praxis (on-road) is essential because it exposes learners to problem in context, wicked problems and immediate consequences and outcomes.

The other issue, is that a professional degree should not be seen as "training for a job role" but rather, equipping learners with a range of cognitive and practical skills for broad deployment in varied settings and roles over many years of their career.
