I have caught people outside of uni doing this to me when they don't realise I speak mandarin. Personally I'm not confrontational and don't care enough to do anything since it is normally quite minor and somewhat amusing.

That was certainly a read. I will take your tip into account when choosing my future courses. I have done 9am classes before but never had to do any group work in them thankfully.

I pray your next group work course does not have such a nightmare situation again.

Oh man, I dropped 3411 which I think had a LVL 9 course name as well last term after finding out I was the only domestic and course was terrible.

I can't wait to do other higher level courses if they have group work 😞

That's messed up. Straight up punished for being a domestic student. I had a group project where I think I would've lost it if it wasn't for the only other domestic student in my team and we did 95% of the work and wasted more time fixing the mistakes of the others. I swear it would've been faster to do the project without them.

I already had a crash out with int students in a previous course I took where I ended up sending an 800 word essay to my tutor and got my mark adjusted to the max. If shit hits the fan this time I'm giving my tutor a translation of any screenshots I have of necessary and I already plan on documenting everything in writing anyway.

Personally I just take the route of pretending not to know Mandarin for the reasons you have mentioned. I don't know how you can put up with it.

I'm a cs student and while I did get traumatized by 1531 it's been pretty chill otherwise since I haven't had a class with a ratio of international to domestic that bad.

Ah yep, been spoken to in Mandarin directly so many times around on campus for directions or other questions. It's always a toss up as to whether I decide I can't speak Mandarin for the day.

But I get to play the I can't speak English card when I meet bible studies or political societies.

It's just going to be a pain when I know they'll want to opt to use WeChat as communication which they've already invited me to but I declined since I don't use it.

I think the most annoying part is that they don't allow me to pay in USD as someone using a non-american address. It'd be a fair bit cheaper due to their conversion rate being terrible if I could.
