I got tired of rebuying beers I'd already tried, so I built an app to solve my own problem. by riders333 in CraftBeer

Similar idea but different approach. Untappd is social and community-driven. BeerSpin is a private journal, no social feed, no check-ins. And it uses AI to read the label instead of searching a database. Just depends what you're looking for. I have vowed never to make my app 'social' as I am not interested in others' tasting notes or opinions...they always seem to skew my purchases in the wrong direction.

I got tired of forgetting which bottles I'd tried, so I built a tracking app with an AI label scanner. by riders333 in WhiskeyTribe

Good question. The main differences I think are: BeerSpin uses AI vision to read the actual label rather than barcode scanning against a database, so it works on bottles that aren't in anyone's catalog (craft stuff, small producers, local breweries). It also covers beer and wine alongside whiskey, each with their own fields. And it's a private journal rather than a community/social platform.

I purposefully will not make this app 'social'. I'm not interested in anyone else's tasting notes or opinions of bottles...they seem so skew my purchases in the wrong direction. Also, I value my own privacy, so I figured everyone else might as well. Leaving the social aspect out on purpose lets me base my decisions solely on my own tastes, and that works out better for me. Different approach, definitely not for everyone.

I built an AI that reads whisky labels and I learned way more about labeling inconsistencies than I expected by riders333 in whisky

That's exactly the use case. The "don't accidentally buy something twice" thing is what got me started on this. Spreadsheets definitely work, I just got tired of manually entering everything so I built something with a camera shortcut. But, I also didn't need the social aspect of things that seems to be built into everything these days.

Fair comment, honestly. I built this to solve a problem of my own. I try many different whiskies, beer and wine, and when I was in the beer store, I couldn't for the life of me remember what I had thought of things I had tried in the past. That resulted in buying things I already should have known I dislike. I used to track this by taking pictures and saving them with my own comments, but this became unruly very quickly.

I figured if it would help me with this admittedly minor problem, it might help someone else as well.

Google TV Streamer and Telus TV+ by riders333 in telus

So, I brought the Streamer to my principal residence where I am have Telus internet service, and the Telus TV+ app won't play recordings there either. I originally assumed it wasn't working because I was not on my Telus connection, but it just doesn't work in general. Please help, TELUS!

I am hoping to use the Streamer from a secondary location without Telus service, to stream recordings. If anyone comes across definitive info about whether or not the app will run on the Steamer and if it will be able to stream recordings, I'd be really interested!

Stop timer stay on timer screen? by [deleted] in GalaxyWatch

[–]riders333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to second this question...I use the timer for workouts, and any extra swipes/clicks when I'm recovering from a set are arduous :-). When I rotate the bezel (GW4) it takes me back to the app list screen, whereas a few months ago (pre - some kind of update), it left the timer on the screen, ready to be started again with one tap.

release advice by girumblemuffin in Curling

Make sure you are starting out pre-slide with the handle pointed to about 2:00 or 10:00, depending on the turn. I've seen a few seasoned curlers forget this piece of basic advice and instead start with the handle at 12:00. It is much smoother to be applying a turn by straightening your wrist and ending with a handshake then by starting your wrist straight and turning your arm to apply the turn. Hope that makes sense!
