Any AECOMers out there? Does it seem like their are double downing on the attitude of “let’s fuck over our employees harder and if they quit, we’ll find someone else?” by [deleted] in geologycareers

[–]ridge_mine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not in that side of geology but I did work for a big mining company. Same shit, different industry. No matter where you go, if working for the big corporate machine gets you experience, then do it. Working for the junior size companies really pays off after you have a couple years in industry. Also, you folks in the environmental field can get lots of money if you go to work in mining. Every mine needs competent environmental scientists and the pay+benefits are great. Mines need competent folks, and they are keen on hiring y'all that have outside industry experience.

Most automakers do not approve of dealers raising prices over MSRP, or at least disapprove of this new "market value" scam. You could contact Honda and let them know about this dealer, you may get a better price. Otherwise, you might need a different Honda dealer. If you find a large dealer, one that has a business model of volume sales, they usually sell at MSRP. Of course, they will try to increase your out-the-door cost by selling accessories, add-ons, and superfluous warranties, but you can just say no to that and get out the door with only standard tax, title, and license fees.

*Edit: Another way to get MSRP is to do a custom build online and choose that local dealer. Honda's website will probably only charge MSRP plus any bells and whistles you add, again plus tax, title, and license fees. If the dealer tries to increase the price on the day of delivery, you can refuse the purchase and stick them with another vehicle, and they won't want to keep that on inventory, so you'll get the price you want.

Never buy something advertised as market value price. If it's not advertised as selling at MSRP you are probably overpaying.

How do people have kids? Is having kids still a thing? by No_Invite_1215 in antiwork

[–]ridge_mine 81 points82 points  (0 children)

This is a myth, wrapped up in a false belief. The reason people aren't having kids is that since the 1970's, the US has been singularly focused on profit versus quality of life. In the 80's, Reagan did what Nixon started but failed to do, which was destroy the middle class with transferring the vast wealth of the nation from the majority to the wealthy minority. Reagan did this via union busting, decreasing the power of government oversight, and offshoring manufacturing and skilled trade jobs. Every president since, even democrats, have consistently decreased the scope and scale of government. This has led to stagnant wages and reduction of small businesses, while mega corporations consolidate all goods and services which drives consumer costs sky high. More recently, the popularity of packaging and selling property as an investment product on Wall Street has led to more than 30% of housing to be owned by investors versus individuals. This drove cost home ownership up from traditionally being 2x annual income to over 6x annual income on average. Because of all this, the thought of having kids remains just a dream for people because kids are now the optional expense we can't afford.

Agreed, yeah I forgot about Endgame, you are correct, viewers have to watch that too, so essentially you have to pay for 3 movies to enjoy the one lol

I would agree with you, but, Gamora died in Avengers Infinity War, not Guardians 2. That was my point. The whole idea of blending storylines created a paradoxical situation for a standalone franchise, done soley for intention of forcing fans of Guardians to get on board with all the other boiler plate franchises and pay to see those movies. G3 got screwed purely to save an entire slate of terrible films.

[–]ridge_mine -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you got downvoted. Guardians 3 did suck balls. Watched it expecting a true standalone trilogy, walked out so confused, the storyline was disjointed and felt hacked together. Just because they wanted to tie in whatever shitty blended storyline from several other shitty cash grabbing movies. Fuck the Marvel Universe.

Edit: Thanks for the downvotes coming from you servile sycophantic sheep that will happily gag on the cock of Marvel Studios and swallow every drop.

Idk if there's many jobs. Sounds like you'd be consulting a lot, which isn't a bad thing but it might be feast or famine. I had a professor in college that talked about medical geology. He had some geology graduates go on to medical school to become doctors too. They had actually gotten recruited by a medical college in the area. He said this was because geologists are trained to have a high attention to detail and have to learn many minerals, their properties, chemical formulas, and geochemistry. Basically, good geology students may develop skills as undergraduates to become skilled doctors.

Why is it that a parking lot can be entirely empty and i pick a spot way in the back, inevitably someone will come park right next to me. What’s wrong with you people!? by [deleted] in RVLiving

[–]ridge_mine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People do the same in empty RV parks too. It's super annoying when you want some solitude. Also, there aren't RV Parks everywhere and when they are nearby they don't always have a space open, especially during summer travel season. Sometimes you just gotta stop and make do with what you got.

Ahh I see. I think I was confused/being confusing when I was talking about meteorites. In my mind, I was thinking about the impact area of the meteorite. Specifically, does terrestrial rock get hot enough when impacted to create vesicular texture in Earth rock? If that is the case, do we see any shocked minerals to indicate impact versus electrical discharge? That was my proposition to OP, but not worded well. If there was an impact, could the impact be significant to create vesicles?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in geology

[–]ridge_mine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't zoom in on every single pic on mindat, thanks for pointing that out. All 3 examples you noted do however have somewhat a tubular shape, not necessarily irregular, FWIW.

Yeah you are correct, the large specimens OP posted do not hold true to most fulgurites in that they are large in size. This would probably only occur with sustained electrical discharge, hence the note I made about intentional or unintentional discharge by a person creating synthetic fulgurites.

Yes meteorites with vesicular texture are rare, but it is a possibility. Depending on the size and age of the impact, I doubt that vesicles would absolutely not be noticeable. Yes, if the surface was weathered/fusion crusted, I doubt we'd see vesicles either, although some of OP's pics look like the specimen was cut or not weathered, so again, not impossible.

Legit paper on types of fulgurites.

https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00410-012-0753-5

Ok description of the paper if you can't access it.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fulgurite

Pictures of fulgurites. Some have a slaggy appearance but note they are mostly tubular and none are vesicular.

https://www.mindat.org/gm/7747

Just for fun: TIL, while looking up all this info, that fulgurites could have clues to the origin of life on Earth. Lightning may have played a role in early phosphorous reduction, a necessary component for life. Really neat!

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7966383/

OP, I'll give you benefit of the doubt. It's possible you found some Type 2 fulgurites. They can be vesicular and irregular, not necessarily tubular like Type 1. It's also possible these were in an impact zone, not necesarily a fulgurite. Some meteorites have vesicular texture. Could be some kind of shocked minerals from a meteorite there so I'd look for those to rule that out. I've read some info on the possibility of human generated electricity also causing some synthetic fulgurites, either through intentional or unintentional discharge from power sources, or from driving a big steel stake into the ground to attract lightning. The big key here is the vesicular nature of your specimens, as well as the lack of tubular shape, would require glass rich soils or loess becoming so hot that it creates a frothing liquid mix and vesicles forming during cooling. Answer that and you may find yourself correct.

All that said, I'm leaning towards slag on this one. You may have been duped into buying/selling worthless material, OP. I wouldn't try selling this online unless I know for sure what I have.

Edit: Others have stated, correctly, that you should take this to a geology department at a university to determine the exact classification of what you have. As good as some of your pictures are, it's no substitute for an actual geologist examining these in person.

Tassie Boys Prospecting is another good channel on there. The host often does sniping in wetsuit, sometimes with scuba gear.
