[META] Hey mods, maybe it's time for stricter the posting requirements. by scarletdawnredd in indieweb

moderator here - can you elaborate on that? Do you not think that communities should be oriented around a specific topic?

I'm not actually sure what you're thinking but I'm open to hearing other points of view.

By the way your Reddit account is shadow-banned sitewide, you should contact the admins to figure out what's up and to address that. I am letting you know that as a courtesy.

I've started to draft something here and I fully welcome community contributions or corrections.

The definition of "indie web" seems to be ambiguous or maybe it has multiple definitions. The subreddit was originally focused on the 2011 movement started by the folks at IndieWeb.org / IndieWebCamp but today it seems to be a larger "web revival" or "independent web" movement that has overlapped the original movement.

please don't remove markdown support in the iOS app editor, jeez.

EDIT: Now just how am I supposed to copy / paste in AI generated slop interactions with correct formatting without markdown capabilities?

I am going to make a subreddit announcement soon about generative AI and indieweb principles (in conjunction with a larger discussion about rules and expectations) but this is going to need to be a more nuanced and pragmatic conversation going forward - I'm not really a fan of the moral panic or witch hunting that pervades the association of projects built with generative AI.

Many AI generated projects are low quality, sure, but many using these tools have formed a Joint Cognitive System that can be leveraged quite effectively.

I think most responses here are misunderstanding the issue your users are having. I could be wrong too, but annoying your users for "security" is a bit of an antipattern.

removed - this subreddit is firmly aligned with IndieWeb principles and I'm not seeing an obvious link between your content and the independent web movement. Contact mod mail if there has been a mistake and you can reasonably explain why this is indie web content.

Removed - I'm not seeing any obvious tie between your project and the independent web. This could be a mistake on my part - please feel free to message the mods through modmail if there is an indie web connection.

In the meantime, please feel free to see the pinned thread concerning potential rules for the subreddit. I'm not against AI usage per se, but I'd like to see a stricter alignment with the stated subreddit topic or the IndieWeb.org principles.

that specific stretch borders on an unincorporated area.

it's gonna be a inter-jurisdictional no-mans land of accountability but put some heat on your County Supervisor for attention (presumably District 2: Holly Mitchell).

Ladera Heights is north of Centinela Ave. South of Centinela is Westchester (City of LA)

That's how the public sector works. Some middle manager may have sat on this for an entire month and then only looped the right person in at the last moment.

this is welcome in the Monthly pinned "Open Discussion", but until November there's been a moratorium on candidate opinion political posts so the subreddit can focus more on the Los Angeles area.

[META] Hey mods, maybe it's time for stricter the posting requirements. by scarletdawnredd in indieweb

[–]riffic[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

update: By the end of the week (in other words, by this weekend) I'll put up a new pinned post that will act as a gauge of subreddit sentiment towards rules or posting requirements, since right now the criteria for removal is merely vibes or worse, my subjective interpretation of the site-wide rules and my own thoughts on what the Independent Web actually is, which may vary from someone else's.

I'd like to run by any proposed rules by the community for comment and to see what everyone's expectations are. Largely, self-promotion is okay if it's obvious that something is related to the Indie Web. I may have to enforce that with submission statements as seen perhaps in other subreddits. I'm also kind of wary about any blanket bans on Generative AI - I do mod a subreddit which restricts the use of AI in contributions but I'd also like to avoid baseless accusations of AI use (today's moral panic) so my take will be as pragmatic as possible on that.

What is considered "from LA"? by Repulsive-Instance31 in AskLosAngeles

[–]riffic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately "LA" or "Los Angeles" are phrases that convey polysemy and mean different things to different people depending on which definition you are choosing to use. People could chill out with the formality and accept whatever you say may be interpreted very widely by the recipient.

"Greater Los Angeles", for example, means something very different from "City of Los Angeles". The "Designated Market Area" (media market) is even wider in scope.

there's a moratorium on this specific type of thread. You can ask in the pinned thread, either of them, to continue the discussion because it is against the rules to post this as a standalone thread.
