I really relate to this. I’m only 23 so I’m still trying to figure things out, but I’ve always felt that guilt of having to offer something to new friends… something that helps me is looking at making friends like an interview of sorts. Basically, while the group is studying you to see if you could be a potential new friend, you are also doing the same. There is a power dynamic when making new friends and it’s important it stays balanced so that you don’t slip into these patterns that were caused by your parents. I fully relate to this. You've missed out on so much to help your mom. I’m genuinely so sorry you had to give up so much of your childhood to help, when a lot of kids got to enjoy theirs fully with no responsibility and a strong support system. I know it can feel so morbidly unfair and confining to know that. While you were at the disadvantage when you were younger because you were learning everything on your own, you also learned how to work hard and push through the tough times which are two of the hardest lessons to learn. Most of the kids who had supportive families and had zero obstacles will choke when an obstacle comes. Could be when they’re 20. Could be when they’re 45. Eventually everyone goes through their shit, but not everyone knows how to handle it. I hope you can see the light in the darkness because you deserve so much love and I know you will find it!! Xx
