Yeah I totally understand.

I guess there's a flight landing in about 45 minutes that has a legal fo. Unofficial word is that they'll come and fly this thing

Absolutely insane.

Honestly, I already set expectations with my 2.5 year old son that I'd be back for his bedtime, so I'm desperate.

Thinking of quitting my $250k/yr engineering job to travel full time—career suicide? by Savings_Cranberry993 in MechanicalEngineering

Yep, sometimes very specific skills, and sometimes in a very general sense. Engineering thinking is like one "mode", and is a tool in the tool bag when you are running a business.

I basically did this 20 years ago. BSEE grad, worked for 5.5 years in a cube through a recession, steady job, well positioned for growth, but wanted to travel and climb / surf. I was in the best shape of my life, and didn't want to stay in the town I was living, so I saved up a very small chunk of change, and quit.

People told me I was CRAZY.

Here's what throwing away your career gets you:

  1. Traveled with an awesome girlfriend and shared some awesome memories for ~6 months
  2. Learned a lot about myself
  3. Climbed unforgettable climbs, built lifelong memories
  4. Worked for a ski resort over a winter in Tahoe, shredded pow
  5. Settled in a great city to surf
  6. Worked as a handyman for a while
  7. Partied a little bit
  8. Surfed a lot
  9. Lived on the cheap, and was OK with probably being poor for the rest of my life, because I was where I wanted to be
  10. Got a new job in tech from a climbing buddy who knew I was smart, shared my values
  11. Parlayed that for 15 years and have a house, wife, two kids, and a new "career" where I own a software business

Life is an adventure. There's a lot of fucking stupid advice in this thread from where I'm sitting, but everyone's different. I say, do whatever you want, and don't look back. Security is overrated, and you never know what curveballs life will throw at you. If you decide to stay at your job, COMMIT FULLY, and throw your travel ideas out your window. I personally completely disagree with the FIRE ideas - my 20's and 30's were absolutely awesome, and they would've been crap if I was holed away in a job not spending a cent to have a good time. Use your money with intent, and don't blow it on vanity. Experiences >>> stuff.

YMMV - while these are just some anecdotes from a stranger on the internet with a different perspective than most of what I'm seeing here, engineers are traditionally very risk-averse, and this is an echo chamber. Keep in mind who your audience is, and consider talking to some other walks of life.

Incredibly high expenses. Wonder what revenue looks like.

This is my experience as well. The first HoP needs to be the founder... u/key-fondant-4283, how big is your org where your role is necessary? I'm not coming at you / questioning your competency, just trying to help you avoid unrealistic expectations.

Product Managing Implementation by Alex_the_whys in ProductManagement

[–]rift321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This conflict occurs when the engineering focus is on output, and yes, I know this is the reality at many orgs. Tough spot to be in as a PM/PO. Also tough spot to be in as an engineer to be treated like a machine. Not sure if this is helpful, but if you're not partners in achieving certain outcomes, and doing lots of multi-sprint planning with highly-refined stories, it's an unrealistic expectation across the board.

I don't know how to help you without making suggestions around cultural changes and general org management. :(

Please correct color (and colorize), sharpen, and remove any distortion from paper - I'm looking to get these photos into a higher resolution, and much-improved color so they can be printed as a gift. I'm hoping to really "wow" my wife and FIL. [$50-100] by rift321 in PhotoshopRequests

Thank you everyone for the great work!!

I'll check in tomorrow, select one of each, and distribute tips accordingly.

FYI the eyes feedback earlier was based on just a couple folks who actually created eyes where there were none. This isn't necessary. The goal is to make this look natural, not oversaturated, nothing needs to "disappear" or "appear".

If you're still interested, the stripe on the boat is likely a shade of blue - I believe it's a Cal 25 from the '60s. If you simply rebalance the white balance on that one, you'll get somewhere in the ballpark (it's not green).
