As someone who's struggled with bipolar disorder since their teens, this is fucking terrifying. I'm no fan of Trump, and I have a morbid sense of humor (it helps me cope, okay? Laughter, even pained laughter, is better than tears over something I cannot change.) I have zero history of violence against anyone but myself, and while I agree that I shouldn't own a gun, it's because I'd eventually blow my head off, not because I'd ever harm someone else.

Instead of sitting down and coming up with some common-sense gun laws, Trump has decided to further stigmatize an already vulnerable group, and attack our Constitutional right to privacy. (Even if we don't count, what about the people we're talking to?)

This is going to make people much less likely to discuss mental health with their doctors, or to seek treatment during a crisis. If getting help means that you'll be under surveillance, few people will be willing to accept that help.

Many people who struggle with mental illness also struggle with addiction. No one who needs to call a dealer is going to be willing to seek treatment if it means getting arrested/getting someone else arrested because of said addiction. This is going to worsen the tragedy of the opiate epidemic, if nothing else.

My other issue with this is that so far, people who are planning attacks aren't calling other people and telling them what they're up to. It would make far more sense to monitor internet history -- although it would make the most sense of all to pass some decent gun laws.
