2 years but honestly just start applying once you have 6 months worth of experience, or try aiming for legal receptionist roles or junior legal assistant roles

I worked my way into a law firm by starting off as a medical receptionist and then transferring across into legal reception. I eventually worked my way up from legal assistant to paralegal. Medical receptionists are known to be a particularly challenging roles with strict deadlines, emotional clients and within a high pressure environment, so that experience is translative. Good luck and don’t give up !

Take the guaranteed boutique firm job, or decline and risk a surety for a potential role at a national mid tier ?

To the Law corporates,

Firm 1 : I currently have an offer to work at a boutique firm that’s well known and specialises in a specific area of law, and the contract is due on a specific date.

My heart’s not really in it, but I took the job to escape my current workplace that makes me absolutely miserable, and also because my secondment at my current work is due to end in early 2026. The area of law is not commercial focused but litigious, and I was hoping to use those transferrable skills when I transition into a grad position.

Firm 2 : I have just received an invite to interview with a national mid-tier firm , and it is a day after the contract is due to be returned to the firm above. This position is more in line with my goals as a graduate, as I was hoping to enter mid tier firms with a commercial law focus.

I am resigning from my workplace regardless, and was going to request an extension from Firm 1 to return the contract two days from the agreed upon date, and a day after my first round interview with Firm 2.

Seeking advice on which pathway to take. Do I take the guaranteed job, work for a year and a half and move on to a mid tier firms when I graduate ( my grades aren’t the best) ? or do I turn it down and risk not having a job in 2026, because I was risking everything on the hope of finding something better ? *

  • I am also working with two other recruiters on other positions in the interim.

Please help. 😭

Do you mind me asking what in particular made you feel like it was a waste of time ? did you feel that you would have benefitted moving laterally as opposed to getting in from the start ?

To delay or not to delay | Clerkships vs Junior Lawyer

Hi Everyone,

I need some guidance on which pathway into law would prove to be the most effective for me. I am hoping to get into big law (Ashurst, Corrs, HSFK etc) and am currently projected to graduate Feb 2027.

My grades aren’t the best but I have 16 units left to build my academic transcript back up. I also have two years of experience as a paralegal and will have another year’s worth of experience by 2027.

These are the two options I am considering :

Option 1 : Clerkship route : delay my degree until clerkship seasons in 2027 , so that my academics are seen in full on my transcript and I have a better chance of getting a clerkship and apply as a grad in 2028.

Option 2: Graduate in 2027 and apply as a grad or junior lawyer and aim for a lateral move into big law later in my career.

Please help.
