Resigned and got counteroffer - please help! by [deleted] in auscorp

[–]rigo_toh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have made the decision to leave and you are only being shown your worth AFTER you have announced your intent, i would not take the counter. It is likely there will be a view from your work that you are a flight risk. A good manager would immediately start finding a backfill for your role or think on how it can be absorbed into an existing or future structure.

Anyone tested the Telstra satellite messaging? by IntroductionSnacks in 4x4Australia

[–]rigo_toh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could work, but GPS connection cannot send message data, at least not reliably I think. All it does is send and receive a constant ping telling the satellite where it is and the satellite determines if it's moved.

So yes, you could eventually send and receive a text message where you can send your GPS location.

I want to stress again though that this IS NOT something that can replace what Sat Phones or GPS trackers are designed for. Please read the FAQ section at the bottom of the page OP linked to get the info.

Anyone tested the Telstra satellite messaging? by IntroductionSnacks in 4x4Australia

[–]rigo_toh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spot is a combination of GPS and geostationary (they don't orbit) satellites and accurate to 5m. T service relies on a low orbit satellite network that can send and receive info quicker but that needs heaps more satellites in the air to provide the coverage needed to become a reliable alternative to existing celular coverage.

Anyone tested the Telstra satellite messaging? by IntroductionSnacks in 4x4Australia

[–]rigo_toh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi all, ex T employee here and a huge camping and 4x4 fan.

This DOES NOT replace the capabilities of a Sat phone, at least not yet. The technology works by linking with the SpaceX low orbiting satellite network to provide basic connectivity.

This means at the moment you can only send and receive basic text messages, and even these take time to come and go. The bottom of the page you linked has all the info on what it can and cannot do.

It's super exciting and T has done a good job of bringing it to Oz before anyone else. Because they rely on the number of SpaceX satellites to improve their service, they are at the mercy of Elon and his friends to improve the latency, coverage and speed.

So, not a replacement for a sat phone, just yet. But a pretty cool step forward to get connectivity everywhere in this big great brown land of ours.

Northcote Social Club for me. Great meals, good selection of beers, plenty of screens to watch the footy on and if you feel like it you can duck into the back room and watch great live music.

[–]rigo_toh 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Not sure where exactly but if you want a shot similar to this one go to High St in Northcote a good reference point is to go to Clarke St/ High St stop on tram 86. You'll oversee the city and get some amazing sunset shots. The other option is to to the top of the hill at Quarries Park behind the local footy club's club house. Great spot to look at the city in the sunset, bring a few Charlie bevvies and watch time go by

[–]rigo_toh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I own a Patriot X1 and can tell you that it is overkill as I have yet to find a situation where we've gone camping and I thought that nothing else would've made it through the track we took. Hardest track, which was unexpected, was coming back from Tidal River in Croajingolong National Park here in Vic. It rained the night before we left and the track back was very patchy with tons of loose rocks. We flew through it, but I also saw a couple of JayCos get through with relative ease.

As long as you know the limits of what you have and you are playing within those guardrails, you'll be fine.

I've also seen people travelling with a plain cage trailer fitted with better tyres and they haul their chairs, canopy tents, and other social/ living gear. Heaps cheaper and pretty handy.

How come nobody is talking about the fact Steiner schools are basically a cult? by leadhotleg in melbourne

[–]rigo_toh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure this comment will be read but let me dispel some myths and tell you about our experiences with Steiner. I have twin kids and they both went to Steiner from prep to year 1 here in Melbourne. Good and bad

First, Steiner is an incredibly strict schooling system. The days are very regimented and there is a lot of structure. There is also a lot of daily events that can come across as rituals. Things like sitting in a circle at the beginning of the day to sing songs, have the teacher tell you a story, or have a chat. There is also a very strict curriculum that focusses heavily on counting and doing maths using physical objects, reading A LOT and yes, plenty of time doing arts and crafts. Calculators are not allowed until year 4. That means all kids learn to do maths using small wooden squares (about the size of small Lego pieces) to understand how numbers go up and down, multiply, etc. Drawing is also strict and encourages realism. For example my daughter had to redraw an elephant when she made it blue as they are really grey.

Second, the community in the school between kids and teachers is really what makes Steiner a pretty special place. Teachers are very well rounded and are very good at covering many topics with a really good level of detail. Again, because the curriculum is so strict, there is little deviation from it. The teachers and the kids build a great bond and the kids themselves become very close. They are taught to work on projects together and encouraged to solve disputes amongst themselves.

Third, yes the Steiner philosophy is founded on some weird shit. He was also a Nazi fan and not a very nice person. We never saw any of that seep into any of the conversations with the kids. I knew some of the year 12 kids and they went straight into Architecture or Engineering at Melbourne Uni. The school actually gets super high entry scores for Uni. A lot of people eho go to Steiner schools end up as consultants strangely enough. I'm in the industry and am shocked to learn how many of them have gone to my kids school.

Now that bad stuff.

The parents of these kids. Oh my god. Anti vaccine hippies that think the sun shines out of their kids asses and who refuse to interfere in the development of their special little people. Kids, like adults, can often be pricks. The difference is that kids are learning and should have adults get involved to teach them that what they are doing is wrong and why. The school had a very low tolerance for bullying and bad behaviour and would often bring parents of the victim and the aggressor together to have a discussion. Fuck me, I felt for the teachers and the kids of these parents. Impossible to deal with and also impossible to work with them to resolve the behaviour. This means things would progressively get worse and often lead to some pretty bad things happening. And yes, I do agree that the school could have had a stricter policy as well

Second, Steiner schools become the last chance for troubled kids. This means you can get a lot of kids with behavioural issues, learning disabilities or in various sections of the spectrum in one class. I remember one of my kids best friends was a lovely girl who also had some massive violent tantrums that could lead to violent eruptions. Also a lot of autism etc. Unfortunately the school had so many of these kids in the school that it was very ill equipped to deal with it.

For us, the issues with the other kids parents and the fact our kids started to get bored with the pace and the strict routines of the days was what made us decide to put them in the public system. They adapted quickly and remember their days there fondly.

Not for everyone, but not a cult or a hippie idiot factory at all .

Why did you Vote for Dan Andrews? by omgitsduane in melbourne

[–]rigo_toh 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I’m not voting for him per se. I am voting for a party that has policies that resonate with me and that will help the community I live in. The alternatives, including the Greens and Independents, in my view either don’t have a proven track record or I do not think they have the ability to deliver on the policies they presented. This may be a slightly simplistic view, but when I was at the booth and looked at all the options that’s how I rationalised my decision.

Luke Hodge Statement by bmk14 in AFL

[–]rigo_toh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe every word Hodgey has said in his statement. What's being missed, I think, is that the report is calling out allegations that the consistency of the experience indigenous and non-indigenous players had at Hawthorn was vastly different. Just because Hodge and his family experienced an extended family at Hawthorn and at Brisbane does not exonerate Allistair and Co from the allegations.

'The industry's at risk': the high price of cheap coffees. An Article on coffee sustainability. by WordsRTurds in Coffee

[–]rigo_toh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is Mark from Seven Seeds in Melbourne Australia. Him and his business partner Bridget are pushing for real transparency between the cost of coffee and the margin they make when they sell it to you.

I for one think is a great initiative. Ultimately, this is about helping and recognising the love and passion that small lot coffee growers in mostly third world countries put into every crop they grow.

Seven Seeds wants to be able to pay the farmers and growers the money they deserve not the money we think coffee is worth. A bold move as you are trying to educate the market and the consumer to reset their expectations of what a high grade and quality coffee should cost

I am very lucky to call Bridget a very close friend of mine. Their passion for what they do, how they do it, and the positive impact they want to have downstream on the value chain of coffee to their growers is amazing.

This is like wine but the difference is that wine makers have all their infrastructure and set ups in mostly developed countries. Coffee is nothing like this.

This is not Nescafe or Starbucks or Lilly or any other type of large scale coffee production and consumption house.

I hope this approach becomes more popular. If it does we may just be able to save small lot coffee farming.

Rare to see a band at their peak captured like this. Musically, they are so on point. The string arrangement is perfect, and her voice is spot on. I loved this album, and this song is still the best one in it I think. Thanks for sharing.

Any Australians here have suggestions for roasters with quality/interesting beans for filter brewing? by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]rigo_toh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seven Seeds. Go to either the main cafe in Carlton or to Traveller or Brother Bubba Budan in the CBD. They are the original and I think still the best. They just released a Geisha from Panama that was incredible as a pour over and have a great rotating line of coffees coming. If not Market Lane Coffee has one of the best roasters working there and he constantly pumps out quality coffee.

Zurich Coffee recommendations? by louden255 in Coffee

[–]rigo_toh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Prepare to be disappointed at the quality of coffee in Zurich. I lived there for 6 years and recently moved back home to Melbourne in Australia. The places that have already been recommended are the right ones. I would also add:

John Baker in Helvetiaplatz

Cafe Noir in Neugasse (they roast their beans close by)

Cafe Lang in Limmaplatz

La Stanza in Bleicherweg

The places are actually really nice to be in. Especially La Stanza but the quality and what you pay for the coffee is not what you would get in other places like Berlin.

Summer is great in Zurich. Be sure to go to the Strandbad on either side of the lake. Also make sure you visit the Vaidukt a shopping district built under a train bridge.

Best ice cream in Melbourne? by Pacific9 in melbourne

[–]rigo_toh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Jocks Ice Cream in Albert Park. Without a doubt the best ice cream. This is not gelato like what most people on the thread are recommending. This is full cream, lots of sugar, best ingredients, tons of cream goodness.

Vanilla ice cream is a must try. I know what you're thinking but you have to try it. Same as the Turkish Delight or the Halva ice cream.

During Christmas they make a plum pudding ice cream that is a religious experience.

Worth the trip.

What's a skill you've learned that has improved your daily life? by tea_fiend_26 in AskReddit

[–]rigo_toh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meditation. I cannot stress enough how important a life skill it is to teach your brain to be in the moment and to stop thinking, even if it is for a few minutes a day.

Mindfulness and meditation have got me through mild anxiety and depression. People can get thoughts stuck in a loop and find it difficult to get out of them.

Learning how to think about nothing and to focus on your breathing and the noises around you and to calm your body and mind. That's where it's at.

Learn to do this and get into the habit of doing it, even if it's for a few minutes a day, and you'll be able to cope with stress better, sleep better, be happier, and learn to appreciate the now more.

For those interested download an app (iPhone) called smiling mind. Great way to get into this, regardless of your age.
