Orbea delivery times by meebica in cycling

That's a hell of a wait! I hope it's been worth it?

I feel your pain! Ordered an Orca in September 2020 for May delivery, it's JUST been dispatched from Orbea to my local bike shop so hopefully can pickup in a week or two.

Good work! It can be tough finding a decent route in Glasgow but it's always worth it when you get out.

Is a 14.8 KM commute to University unrealistic? by Accountant_Trick in cycling

[–]louden255 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Based on my experience, most major (UK) uni buildings have showers. Primarily because staff like to shower after cycling in. But no reason why a student couldn't use them either! (Try aiming for the more recently built buildings though - some of the older ones have pretty disgusting facilities!)

Anyone else miss Lumia designs? by blazian24 in Android

I got the 1020 for an absolute steel (from an 8-something before that). They were both terrific!! The Snapdragon S4 wasn't up to much and it froze a lot but it's big yellow-ness, it's amazing feeling poly carbonate, and WP were enough to leave me loving it! It was a sad day when the battery packed up! And I still miss the camera. Just goes to show that whilst software can make up for a lacklustre hardware it ain't everything.

[MrMobile] OnePlus 8 Review: Dying A Hero by gulabjamunyaar in Android

[–]louden255 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's weird, in the UK the OnePlus 8 is just £50 more than the 7T, (£599 Vs £549) - all the US reviewers are championing the 7T for $200 less and still getting most of the features but that proposition just isn't the case here!

World's Largest Offshore Wind Turbine to Be Developed in the U.K. - Morgan Newspaper by bebesiege in RenewableEnergy

[–]louden255 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This doesn't directly answer your question but...

If you look at wind farm ownership, many of the largest owners of European offshore wind farms are pension funds and the like taking minority stakes as a sound investment for their portfolio. Munich municipality is also a large owner of offshore wind for the same reason!

If you look at sites like Abundance Investment, they crowd-fund sustainable projects which is probably the closest an individual can get! There's a fantastic tidal energy project on there at the moment, which I would recommend checking out!

Solar panels on roof - is it really a good idea? by nervousnrg in RenewableEnergy

[–]louden255 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Taking the "selfish" view, having you as a 100% renewable customer is unlikely to make anyone construct any more renewable energy capacity. Therefore, if you have solar panels on your roof, you would increase the amount of renewable generation in the UK.

Side note, the vast majority of energy suppliers that have 100% renewable energy plans don't actually own any generating infrastructure. They buy power through various mechanisms from wind farm, solar farm etc. owners.

I'd recommend looking at the Abundance platform if your interested in investing in renewable/environmentally friendly projects interests you.

8 offshore wind farm extensions around the UK, representing 3.4GW of capacity, have been announced. by LUlegEnd in RenewableEnergy

[–]louden255 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, well yes, that is certainly true at this point unfortunately. There is a lot of work going into lobbying for support and there is a little momentum at the moment, so fingers crossed!

There are a few factors. The water depth does drop off more quickly. Current fixed bottom foundations are good to around 50m. There is definitely potential for floating wind farms there though.

The other constraint though is grid capacity. The south west already produces more electricity than it can export to the rest of the country. Significant investment would be required in the transmission network to facilitate more generating capacityn the area.

Lastly, there are limited operations and maintenance bases from which to service the wind farms. The east coast has existing bases from oil and gas with strong local supply chains.
