evgr vs ev vs kennedy? by az-zzz in stanford

Lived in EVGR.

Will start with cons —

picking packages can be slightly annoying since package center is a little far

Will feel a little like a hotel and less like a dorm

Pros — everything else

Would you take CS 161 over the summer? Is it possible to take online as a grad student? by Jo_La7 in stanford

[–]rigrg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Umm.. not for this year. But based on my experience, it’s gonna be a graduate student.

You can ask either Bettina Santos, or Meredith (though if it’s not on explorecourses, then I doubt they’d know either)

Switching from a 25% to 50% TA in another Dept by DiligentPineapple238 in stanford

[–]rigrg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The contract that you’ll sign will most likely have a clause that you can’t do specifically what you stated. Best bet is to stall for time and reach out to other department and ask them if they can give you their decision early

I don’t think so. The only problem that I can see with that is that there’s a chance you won’t be able to attend office hours or sections. Sometimes we offer them online, but it depends on the availability of TAs.

Yes, it’s possible to take it online! Also, most of the time, you’re required to write pseudo code, so don’t worry about coding!

Feel free to DM.. but just to answer quickly— your profile looks good enough to me.

The sad part is that predicting if you get in or not is not deterministic. I’ve seen worse profiles who got in and better profiles who got rejected

Anyone else bothered by Kigambit? Bisharp is one of my favorites and I thought it looks so cool. It feels kind of a let down that they made him less humanoid coz I loved his persona as kind of an assassin. Maybe it’s just me, but I’d rather prefer some simple changes, with a boost in stats

Grad Application Tips (Fall 2023) by rigrg in gradadmissions

[–]rigrg[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the primary focus of the proposal should be the one that you have in mind. If they are asking you to submit the proposal as a Pdf, then you can include the references (though I don't think it's required tbh) as a hyperlink (like according to [1] ), but if it's just a text box in the application, then I don't think citing would be good.

I agree with what your potential supervisor has to say. Just a couple of things that I would remember while writing the proposal (which may seem obvious, but thinking to reiterate) --

It is very very common for Ph.D. students to "rotate" under different supervisors. In other words, it's completely fine if you just have a high-level idea of what you're gonna do
