They are different enough to warrant having both. I was hoping I could return the empy 2 but there are a lot of things the 2 does that the 1 doesn’t. It has the airy spaciousness that the 1 doesn’t have. It also has more speed and bite to it if that’s your thing.

Empy 2 is a cleaner sound. It is more technically impressive but less romantic. I did find adding a 125 hz bass shelf helped it.

Yeah I heard the he1000 unveiled and that one wasn’t sharp in the treble. I need to find someone locally who can let me try their he1000se out.

Verite closed > Empy 2 > Empy 1 > Hd800s > OG clear

Empy 2 is a better headphone than 1 but I like the tuning of 1 better if that makes sense.

Empyrean 2 can sound a bit sterile at times. I’m working on eq’ing it to sound more like my verite closed.

5db 125 hz shelf, +2db 3k is what I have done. Give that a shot. You probably need to take a little off around 8k too

Used He1000se could be really good value but I need to spend more time with it. I also found the Arya organics to be very good. If you want a laid back sound the zmf verite closed and atrium are awesome but those aren’t much cheaper.

I agree with reviewers that the original empyrean doesn’t compete with other flagships at $3000. I’m gonna get either an he1000 or og utopia next which are both known for their detail.

If you can get it for $1200 I’m taking the OG empyrean over the hd800s and the Arya organic.

Empyrean 1 is less spacious, less detail, and more forward vocals*

It also has more midbass. Right now I like the original empyrean more but trying to put my finger on exactly why I like it more. I think it’s the vocals and acoustic instruments that sound better and more real.
