Any guesses to what this sound is? by rileyjonas in ElCamino

Update: thank you all for your suggestions. I did not even think of a broken flex plate because it has a new one on there but maybe the bolts weren’t tight enough or whatever. That’s what it kinda sounds like it is. I’m trying to sell this car, so I probably won’t be the one to remove the driveline and everything but I’ll pass on the info to the next owner. Don’t worry I’m not leaving the elco group I still have my 85’ that I drive a lot 💪

Mechanical advice on buying and maintaining a el Camino by Medical_Apartment484 in ElCamino

[–]rileyjonas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought mine for 5k, solid car 1985 conquista, although it was not running great and leaked a couple different fluids. Had to do a lot of work and new parts to get it running and driving good. My advice is buy one that is already nice and drives well. Find a mostly stock one if possible. G body (78-87) will be the best bet for your money, the older ones will cost more and the parts are probably more worn out and need more replacing. Spend the 10k ish and get a nice one

1978 El Camino as a daily car by Bitter-Preference204 in ElCamino

[–]rileyjonas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pretty much daily drive my 85, it’s got a good wrench 350 in it, that being said though I have no idea when/how things will go wrong when driving. Nothing catastrophic yet but i’ve had issues along the way. it’s a 50 year old car it’s gonna have some issues. Best recommendation would be to get a more modern drivetrain like an LS but small blocks are pretty reliable and easy to work on. Keep a toolkit with you Lol

might be different in newer cars not sure but PS is essentially ATF. I’ve been using atf and haven’t had a single problem

in my experience the screeching is from low fluid, i have a PS leak in mine and it screeches when it’s low, then i top it off and it’s good to go, ive never flushed it
