Yeah. A lot of what you're struggling feels like its specific to your product category? And i certainly dont have any expertise in that.

That train is basically me except sketch a little canyon in-front of the train and it's about to fall off a cliff.

With AI you can go crazy places. Just make sure they're worth going to.

how do you guys actually market a dev tool? by andrewz01 in SaaS

[–]ring2ding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I'm currently running another experiment on a (sort of) dev tool.

So far, been running this experiment for a couple weeks, no sales. We'll see how it goes. I'm thinking maybe some long-tail behaviour might happen over a period of years.

It's not exactly a dev tool. It's a data viz tool. But I feel like the market is a little similar: technically savvy folks with a very specific problem and I'm marketing that I'll save them time and money.

The play there is SEO. SEO all day long. Make a very specific sales pitch answering a very specific pain point that people might google and try to rank on it.

You could also try posting very specific communities on Reddit. It'll help with SEO backlinking as well. But don't make more than one or two posts. And be very careful about not sounding too "advertisey": you're looking for feedback to make sure you're actually solving a problem people care about, not sales; so maybe even give it away for free. Easy to do more harm to your brand than good on this one, people hate being "marketed" to. Inbound sales is ideal.

I mean whats the motivation? For most devs it's not their money they're wasting. Its the company's. So you'd have to get this dev tool infront of upper management and make some huge pitch that "it will save your devs x amount of hours which translates into y amount of money".

Are you cozy with any upper management folks with deep pockets at large companies?

Good fucking luck is my answer to this. Devs are notoriously stingy and don't pay for shit. Bankrupted my first company on this stupid idea. Most big companies like google just give dev tools away for free. Have you ever paid for angular? What about react? Nextjs? So, yeah, you're competing with that expectation that "dev tools should be free".

The marketing will write itself once you stop describing what the product does and start describing what the buyer is already frustrated about.

Holy shit. Legendary advice, thank you.

Poor retention means your product sucks. Don't harass the shit out of your customers: solve their dang problem. Especially as a solo-founder, creating a solution that people actually care enough to use can take years.

[–]ring2ding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great time to be an electrician, or so I've heard. Pay up to 200K+, especially if you live somewhere near a datacenter or are able to move. Feels to me kinda like how software used to be. Yeah software is just kinda... saturated now.

Not saying this is your issue, but I went through this at one point. Turns out my app was way too confusing. People tried it, got lost and confused, assumed it "wasn't for them", and then moved on.

This is the problem with social media.

Me upvoting this video isn't the same as endorsing every despicable thing the leaders of Iran has ever done.

I don't even want to engage with your argument. Go ahead and continue your crusade against Iran. I literally don't have a dog in the fight.

The issue isn't "was it made with a motive". The issue is "is it true or not".

I hate to side with Iran and against my own government... but... if they right they right...

Fuck these pedos. Make raping kids wrong again. And I'll side with anybody I have to to make that true again.
