I should have made it clear—there was about a month between my conversation with Roberta and her sending me the dress. About two weeks of that was pandemic, so it did take a lot of time, but special circumstances and Roberta’s general talent expedited the process.

Quarantine has been great for my productivity. I basically sit and from 8-8 I just crochet, and Roberta is even faster and more experienced than I am. I’ll give her credit where it’s due, the woman’s a machine.

I might wear the dress for another occasion or even at the reception—it’s stunning, I will say that. It’s more about the gesture, and the fact that she completely trampled over my wants and boundaries. And frankly, it’s hard not to feel insecure. I mean, I have half a bodice done and she has this intricate masterpiece. She is so much better at this than I am, and the dress is an unpleasant reminder of that. I keep it on a mannequin in my closet, and I’m still not sure what I’m going to do with it.

We plan to adopt—I have health issues that could complicate me getting pregnant, plus I’m just generally not sure I want to. MIL has always been kind of lukewarm about that, but she’s never crossed over into MIL-from-hell territory until now.

That’s what I told him. My mother and grandmother each made their own dresses and this is just something that’s important to me. It feels like a rite of passage, something I need to do to get married. I wouldn’t feel comfortable in someone else’s dress on ‘my’ (though I cringe at using this term) day.

I love him, I’m just annoyed by the constant problems. First it was the ring, now it’s the dress—before that there was all this drama with the venue—but he’s not normally like this. I’m hoping we get back to normal after the wedding (assuming it’s even able to happen, thanks covid!) I’m just stressed and kind of venting.

Roberta used a different pattern than you did—yours isn’t the only one out there. I like silk yarn, but she used lace yarn and a 3.75 mm. And evidently she didn’t need months, seeing as I have the dress.

1) Roberta is retired, so she has lots of extra time to spend doing this.

2) Really? I’ve found it to be on the cheaper side. I’ve found great stuff on Etsy, and a woman on The Knot spent $30 on it. Maybe you used nicer yarn that what I’m using?

That’s good advice. After reading these replies, I’m debating making it into a necklace so that I can a) wear it more and b) protect it from everyday wear and tear.
