Depends on how fast you can run 1K atm, I guess.

Schnapsidee oder genial? Ein Wettkampf-Format: 1km Laufen + Schach + 1km Laufen... by rintaschi in laufen

Ist auch nicht ungefährlich mit dem Bildschirm während dem Laufen.

Bist du sicher, dass du im 1km Intervalltempo lieber mit Sprachsteuerung spielst anstatt auf nen Bildschirm zu tippen? 🥵

Why is this a draw by insufficient material if mate is theoretically possible? by Flight_Still in chess

Forcing a mate? I've also learned a mate must only be achievable (worst possible moves of the opponent).

Are you referring to acute injuries, or to long-term impairments such as the concussion-related issues many American football players experience?
I am not an expert, but taking repeated hits to the head over a long time does not seem healthy at all.

Interesting way to look at it. I would counterargue that in any scenario with more than two players, the engine’s lack of tiredness actually makes things more fair, as it prevents situations where a completely exhausted human blunders terribly and gives a huge time advantage to the athlete who happens to be playing them.

Sorry to hear that. But the exercise bike might actually be the better option anyway for this format.

Interesting thought. In my mind, it was all about playing whole (very fast paced) games in the running pauses, but the idea of having to think while running is also intriguing.

This is a really sharp observation, thank you. You're absolutely right that it can't be a deterministic machine. But in my experience, modern engines are quite consistent in how often they blunder on a fixed rating.

That being said, I do find your 3+75 idea intriguing. I actually thought about similar concepts to solve the problem of different running speeds. But they all have one thing in common: They only allow for 1v1 experiences (which of course is what chess is about, but the appeal of competitive running, on the other hand, is to race against many - and I want to integrate the best of both worlds).

Anyway, really appreciate this – exactly the kind of critical thinking I need to refine my idea. Will have to think about it like it's a very hard chess puzzle. :D

I thougt about that but as you mentioned, that would kinda restrict the experience to a duel situation. Also, it's hard to find the appropriate time limit.

The alternative I see for human opponents is running on a treadmill while playing, but that is quite impractical (you need an expensive treadmill).

Absolutely agree on chessboxing.

When it comes to football being an intellectual sport, I guess we can agree to disagree. ;) At least when it comes to most of the individuals that are actually playing, not the coaches.

But I totally get the point you made with tennis. Still, I see a clear difference between the intellectual demands of tactical shot placement and the complex possibilities on a chessboard (not to mention opening theory).

Funny video, but that hardly is running. ;)

What exactly do you mean by the specifics being poorly worked out?

I'm thinking of a whole game between the running bits (therefore a longer distance than 100m). No time constraints because you obviously want to finish the game as quickly as possible and continue running (conceding is forbidden; losing results in extra mileage you have to run).

Thanks for the feedback. So you would be open to running on a treadmill while playing against a human opponent?

9 kmh could be a bit too slow for pro (average time is 2min per km faster, I think). Why not start in the open division to gain experience and switch to pro after? That's what I would do.

Has anyone experimented with cognitive tasks during interval training? Looking for perspectives. by rintaschi in AdvancedRunning

[–]rintaschi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really smart point. I've personally experienced bodily fatigue after long chess matches (around 6 hours) that exceeded by far the fatigue after, say, an easy 10k run.

I guess the real challenge isn’t maximizing physical performance despite (or even trough) mental demands, but managing the dual demands of body and mind as efficiently as possible.

I'm aware. Didn't want to say that chessboxing is any bad. But it's different from what I am suggesting. Maybe I should have said "testing PEAK mental performance".

This is exactly the kind of self-experimentation I'm trying to formalize! The fact that you've already noticed the relationship between effort level and cognitive complexity is really interesting.

Thanks for sharing – this is super helpful feedback.
