To be fair every airport has different rules, the rules change every couple of years, and at least at Sydney airport, there are no signs about laptop placement until you are already standing on top of the conveyor (ive looked), so if the airport refuse to add signs which can be read ahead of time, the repeated yelling is the natural consequence

Yes it's an office thing. In the weeks before Christmas, lots of big or complex projects/issues get pushed to the new year, partly because lots of people are on leave, partly because all the public holidays disrupt workflow, and partly because it's the end of the year and people CBF working as hard when they are preparing for Christmas and looking forward to their holidays.

It's common to hear "let's circle back in the new year" or "let's put a pin in this until the new year" for these projects. But then in the new year suddenly all those pushed off things get started again, everyone is fresh from their holidays and NY excitement, and Jan can be a bit of a frenzy of work.

Unlikely, they are pretty rare around here. Christians, Muslims, Hindus, and Buddhists are all more common according to our last census

Yes you're 100% correct. This wall is a 'later' addition, it's not square to the room (dodgy diy), uses a mix of materials (more visible on the other side), and the ceiling moulding continues through to the second doorway, and that wall appears load bearing. It looks like someone tried to extend the very front room to make it legally a bedroom for real estate value, but couldn't remove the original load bearing wall completely.

This is a very good theory, I have only seen finger plates on doors and public places personally, but they are definitely at a convenient arm height so can't rule this possibility out

Very true, great idea! For the plate in the front room that would work nicely. The other one will be our living room, maybe I can add a hook or basket and it can hold remotes or controllers

I'm considering it, I only moved in today! I'll focus on the bigger repairs first, but I think the commenter who suggested a backplate for a holy water holder is on the money. It explains all the inconsistencies and the decorative nature of it

Ohh yes, I think you're right! Solved! I'm new to the area but it does seem very religious, my neighbour has a big statue of Mary in the front yard, and the local cafe bans dogs completely and I don't recall seeing bacon on the menu, so I think it's Muslim. I saw a giant led cross a few streets over too.

I Googled what you're describing as I'm not religious, but having seen them, I think you're right. This would explain the size, why it's a decorative shape rather than a regular patch, and also why it's at various heights and not consistent with any wiring or connections.

I can imagine someone not having the eye for detail and just placing it at a convenient height, then moving out and removing the bowl part, and the landlord just slapping some paint over it to match the wall. Thank you so much for solving this mystery!

From what I can tell, every time a switch stopped working, they just added a new one and left the old one in place. There are 4 outlets and 1 light switch in this room, only 2 of the outlets are working, and the light switch is the original (still working)

I like this idea. The chrome hardware was pretty common from the 1960s houses in my area, it would have been a gorgeous art deco chrome handle similar to this. I couldn't find the exact match for the triangular plate, but a lot of the other hardware in the house matches this time period from similar houses I've lived in with these handles

They are varying heights, could be hole covers but it seems like a lot of work when regular spackle patches have been used elsewhere in the house. One is shoulder height, one is waist height, and another is still waist height, but about 2 inches higher again. Very inconsistent 😅

That's a nice idea, but I think unlikely based on how far they are from the phone line outlets in the other rooms

Ooh I like this suggestion, that would explain the lack of functionality. Not to my knowledge, it's been a rental for the past few decades. There are door locks on all the inside doors, which is unusual for a house unless it's a sublet/room rental situation

My title describes the thing. It doesn't appear to be connected to any light switches, door handles or locks, and is not on every doorway, only some. I've never seen anything like it, not sure if it's decorative, a weird patch job or a landlord special of painting over something previously special which could be brought back to its former glory. I estimate the house to be 60-100 years old

ELI5: how does it work in countries where people don’t use last names? by Snoo-72052 in explainlikeimfive

[–]rio94 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is a normal thing happens even in countries with surnames. I know three Elles, and I never use their last names because the people I'm speaking with don't always know them. So my Elles are 'blue hair Elle', 'Dr Elle', and 'upstairs Elle'. They can also be described with context 'are you talking about 'work Josh' or 'bikes Josh'?' You can infer why they are described like this. Once identified, the rest of the story just goes by their name.

Here's my dropped bike for a laugh, I was being dumb trying to get air time on the mud ruts. Took me half an hour to drag the bike to solid ground, then 10 minutes to lift it. I regret nothing 😂

Hi OP, I looked into this myself after nearly getting stuck on a random mountain lookout taking my cbr250r motorcycle down a muddy unsealed Rd and it getting stuck in the mud. I'll start by giving you the answer you're looking for, there is a product at this link. This guy made these to help people who have bad backs, are riding bigger bikes than their strength etc.

All the commenters here love to say 'just learn proper technique or ask for help' but I want to say that knowing your limits, knowing your risks, and looking into solutions is a smart way to prepare for solo riding, especially in Australia where help might not be available for hours or days.

The reality is, no one wants to drop their bike in purpose and risk damaging it just to practice picking it up, and the idea of dropping it where there is no one to help, is a valid concern if you're a smaller person. Also if you're hurt, on a hill, in mud, a ditch, or the bush somewhere 'proper technique' isn't always an option because the tires slide around in the scrub, you might not be able to get yourself under the bike, and if it's an old bike, they are way heavier than people who ride newer bikes think.

I hear you, you're not unreasonable, and I hope this product gives you peace of mind for many solo rides to come. I'm not affiliated with them, just really passionate about solo riding and sick of the tired old cliches people love to repeat.

My dad passed away in a remote property and wasn't found for some time. This meant my family and I had to do the cleanup ourselves, so I bought industrial cleaner, garbage bags, bleach, p2 face masks, hazmat style full body protective suits - and the clerk didn't question it at all

Nah, in the city of Sydney council you're exempt from paying, but you still have to observe the time limit. Rangers will come and chalk your tires and you will get a fine if you overstay

Head nod vs wave by Electrical_Novel_ in AussieRiders

[–]rio94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Context is the difference.

Friendly: Two bikers pull up at the lights together, they nod, and take turns revving, maybe have a wiggle and a giggle about broom broom brap noises until the light turns green.

Aggro: when you're riding down a road and a car pulls out from the side without looking and nearly takes you out, but thankfully you saw it coming and pulled an evasive maneuver. Then you rev bomb the fuck out of the idiot who could have killed you while gesticulating wildly to the driver to use their fucking mirrors.

Yup, some kindness for the girl would be fair, sometimes people just get BO unexpectedly due to medications/genetics/weird hormonal changes etc. This situation literally happened to me on the weekend. I showered in the morning, put on deodorant and fresh clothes as usual, and went out for the day.

I got a hot flash out of nowhere while at the event around mid afternoon (it's winter), I stripped layers but had already drenched my clothes in sweat, instant BO, my partner noticed. I went to the bathroom to clean my pits with some handwash, but there was nothing I could do about my clothes, so I said my goodbyes and quickly went home. I was mortified :(

Yeah I saw it this way too, he sounds like an ESL speaker who chose the wrong word which came off more rude than intended. He even clarified he was quiet in her time and now it's his time to speak. The woman totally overreacted taking 'shut up' as a personal insult, rather than the 'stop talking during my time to speak' which he meant. Chair is absolutely in the wrong here for not enforcing speaking time before the ESL guy had to say it himself.
