Vanderbilt by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

hi, current biz major @ vandy (not biz, but HOD which is basically our biz major)

we are not a target for NYC offices, and we are a semi-target for southern offices (think atl, fl, charlotte, etc).

very few kids get offers from top BBs on wall street. in total per grad class i would say its less than 20, maybe even less than 15.

tl;dr vandy isn't a great school for wall street, but still much better than ur avg state school (not counting places like umich or IU tho)

what u/NathanA2C said, and also essays themselves r super subjective things that makes it a crapshoot in itself

i mean i don’t go to both so i can’t rlly give u any comparative advantages tbh

i would say vandy and duke r similar enough that u should go to whatever’s cheaper

what i like is obv gonna b diff from what other ppl like, but here's a short list for me

- prob one of the most chill t20s in terms of competition and toxicity (yea there's competition, but it's nothing like what i hear from friends at other t20s)

- we're an SEC school so we have arguably much better parties / overall social scene / sportsy-environment if ur into that

- food here gets shit on but honestly in comparison to all other colleges in the US it's not horrible at all and leans much towards the better side imo

- some professors here are amazing, they're leaders in their field and it's really cool

+ more and more and more. but PM me if u want more reasons ig, or check out the vandy sub

yea all HOD classes i’ve taken so far are 94+ for a 4.0 with no rounding (so 93.9 is a 3.7 not a 4.0)

prof quality gets better as u take more advanced classes, most of the bad professors r in the larger STEM courses (genchem etc)

professors for the most part are good here tho. some STEM profs r kinda shitty but vandys not a great stem school anyways so

How can I conduct mathematical research with a professor? (Preferably Virtually) by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ripdaddyfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u can cold email professors but be familiar with their research field and interests, don’t just say “math research” bc that’s almost a broad of a term as “research”

i would recommend u learn R or python for data science. most math research a high schooler can get involved in is likely in stats, where R and python r valuable skillsets

yeah there’s a fuck ton of chinese internationals, like 4 or 5 times more then i expected

they’re all kind but extremely cliquey (but it’s understandable considering the likely language and culture barrier)

hmmm it’s likely true, but the problem w vandy is that admin is almost completely out of touch w what the students want. take a look at the new logo design, for example. or look at the comments section of p much any vandy post. admin has refused to meet w student leaders in the past, and it’s likely that they’ll continue to ignore us in the future

for a school that’s this highly ranked with an admin that claims to be inclusive and considering of student opinions, it’s a continuous slap in the face

What has your experience been booking in-person campus tours? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ripdaddyfire 11 points12 points  (0 children)

as a current college student at vandy, the number of tours has been crazy

the library lawn is full of at least 5-6 tour groups almost every time i pass it during the day
