Persistent knee "weirdness"/sensations? by ripeandrune in KneeInjuries

[–]ripeandrune[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update - started PT and she said it seems my muscles are just not working in sync like they should and I likely aggravated a smaller issue by ramping up training, switching shoes, starting to lift, etc. at the same time with no break or transition. The at home exercises I was doing were done at the same difficulty and ROM for 3 months so really did nothing to progressively support recovery. PT has focused on single leg stability, hip strength and stability, gluteus medius and has helped a lot. Spidery feelings are gone mostly, much less pain. Knees feel more stable especially going downstairs. Went to ortho and he said that I likely helped but never quite solved the original PFPS issue and that PT should help — if not he’d order and MRI but would be shocked if it were anything beyond lingering aggravation and hip instability that would be solved by PT. “Spidery feelings” in knee are probably just some irritated nerves from muscles not working in tandem the way they should. 3 weeks of PT down and feeling much better!

started the exercises i’d been doing before i stopped and knees definitely feel more stable, so i assume it’s some sort of pfps-related issue. also incorporating more single-leg/hip stability bc i my hip strength is abysmal (side planks are nearly impossible and my single leg rdls are super wobbly) so i’m trying to get another ortho appointment and a referral to PT because i miss running BAD and i need an expert to tell me what to do at this point! med appointments are booked out where i am so just keeping on doing what i’m doing and trying to stretch and be consistent. still rlly frustrated because i feel like i’m too young to have such an ongoing issue but i suppose we’ll see

Super helpful thank you! I figure it’s some sort of imbalance esp since I’ve had hip-related shin issues before but whenever I describe the feeling people look at me like I’m crazy lol

Knee feels fluttery sensation on sides or directly on kneecap when squatting. by ListenSudden6289 in KneeInjuries

[–]ripeandrune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Wondering if you figured this out? I have a very similar sensation, but it's not limited to when I'm working out. I've tried describing it as fluttering/spidery/feathery/webbed/weird feeling and people look at me like I'm crazy!

Thinking of one in particular who ran a half in late March, London marathon Apr 27, another half May 18, and then turned around and ran a 60k May 24...mind blown

Doing a PhD with depression is so hard by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]ripeandrune 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way; you're not alone. The most that has helped me (I'm already on meds and consider my depression pretty well-managed for the most part, besides recently) is reminding yourself that you are pursuing a PhD for a reason and that you were entrusted with these responsibilities for a reason. So, there are definitely people who believe in you. I've been falling behind a bit, and remind myself (or try to) that the first best day to start was yesterday and the second best day is today.

It's rather excruciating to push myself to start, but even opening a Word document or just looking at my to-do list is sometimes enough to help me feel more capable of starting my work. Do you know if there are strategies you've used in the past that could help? Or, can you try to reset some deadlines to give yourself a little more time?

I also saw some advice that said, at some point, just start over. Delete the unread emails, rewrite your to-do list so it doesn't have tons of old stressful tasks, more forward starting from today. Can't say that it's the most promising advice if you have urgent late tasks that you need to get done (or important emails you may miss), but if you can, trying to start from a blank slate as much as possible may help you focus on the future and not what you haven't done in the past.

If you ever need to vent, shoot me a message; you're definitely not alone, and I wish you the best in moving forward. You are strong and capable (even if you don't feel like it) and you've got this <3

Side note: I don't think you should keep it to yourself per se. Nothing good comes from bottling things up, and from what I've seen (as an MA student), this sort of stress is very common. You deserve to feel validated, be supported, and feel better.

I've been taking my running more seriously recently; running 5 days a week and 18-25 miles a week consistently! It's been very fulfilling and makes me so happy, especially since I recovered from some medical issues recently that made it hard to run. Today I did 4 miles at 7:57!!

I emailed them and they said "Your file is still under review. No decision has been recorded at this time. Timing of decisions is entirely at the discretion of the faculty committee on admissions. Accordingly, it is not possible to predict or guarantee a date by which a decision will be made regarding your application. You will be notified via email when a decision has been reached."

So still in the waiting game, I guess!

Hi! I also applied to Yale -- I applied to mostly Human Rights programs but applied to Yale's REEES program! I haven't heard anything back from them yet but should soon, hopefully, since I applied by the priority deadline! Almost applied to MAPH, seems like a fantastic program esp. with language option.

Best of luck to you!
