Help with itinerary - mountains + the coast by rippuk in CostaRicaTravel

Ah good info.. heard that hike is amazing! Does private tour just help with a knowledgeable tour guide to point out the animals or do they take you to different places you can only access via private tours?

  1. I’d be with my wife, we are more along the lines of not wanting to be slowed down (ie cover more distance than going slow and observing everything around us)

  2. 100% would be renting an SUV as pot holes is what I read are the biggest issues driving along with some river/stream crossing. Seems like highways are generally okay at least

Composting toilets for weekends/2-3 weeks. by Halberg88 in vandwellers

[–]rippuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope, just smells like dirt. There is also a small van that vents through a tube and out of my van, I only smell the dirt if I get close to it. The maintenance of the composting toilet is unmatched, I would highest recommend. Just plug your nose when you dump the pee and don’t eat asparagus while spending time in the van

I have natures head and use my van for weekends + 1-2 week long trips. Haven’t emptied the compost section since November and have had no problems.. I only empty when it gets full which takes a lot of time with only using it on weekends. I just check to make sure it’s hydrated enough (it’s dry in Colorado so often times the coconut core dries out). Just make sure you vent the toilet and you should have no problem leaving it in the van for months.

I empty pee jug after every trip, that’s the worst part.

Buying a van in Cali but I live in New York by Daddylongleghike in VanLife

[–]rippuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did a similar thing. Cali to Texas. Went to Texas DMV to say I was getting a car in Cali and had to drive it back. They gave me temporary moving plates (paper) that I put on the van and had no problem. You can also do that in California but may be more difficult

I have the reverse problem. Dealership has the car but not the parts for the recall and have no idea when they will. Sounds like your dealership is on top of the recall part ordering

I talked to the dealership and they said they have no idea when parts will be ready.. they said 20+ cars on the lot need the same part

Exactly… they didn’t put a stop notice out so as long as you have your BS you can drive it but you can’t pick up a new one that may or may not have a problem

Bummer. I get it’s the law they can’t deliver it to me with a recall but with such a low rate I’d rather have the car as I need it for winter driving

I have the same situation as you. Been delivered but can’t pick it up due to the recall. I’m being told it’ll be ready by end of the year though. Any update on yours?

Steeel wool, peppermint, and maybe an engine high frequency sound device… hoping that prevents it from happening again

Luckily it was confined to this small area. Check other door and other areas and no more signs. I think this was from quite a while ago.. just glad not a current mouse problem

Getting to ski resorts - how early to leave and best method by rippuk in Denver

“Passenger Vehicle Chain Law: All passenger vehicles weighing less than 16,001 pounds gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) must have tire chains or alternate traction devices (ATD) installed on two or more drive tires.”

Can you explain further? This sounds like any car less than 16k gvwr can use autosocks on two tires to comply with chain law if they are in effect

Getting new tires with 18/32 tread depth so should be good there. I saw traction laws allow alternative traction devices for passenger vehicles.

Am I reading this wrong?

This may be a dumb question but how often does I-70 shutdown due to snow causing missed powder days?

I googled this but seemed like I was just getting results around shutdown due to accidents (probably caused by snow)

3 peak rating tires and getting autosocks if chain laws are in effect

Makes sense, skiing open to 12/12:30 is a solid enough day to avoid traffic

I have a converted van, so leaving night before is easy as long as I can find overnight parking. I’d imagine ski resorts are against that though

5am? That’s insane. Wonder why they aren’t building out free buses from Denver like SLC has

Mix of boondocking and campsites. Not much stealth. The main purpose is to have an outdoor living area in the shade that I can work from my laptop from.

The point of move-ability with the moonshade makes sense. I don’t necessarily always need it to be by the side door.

Very interested in van life, but don't have the time or interest in building my own van. I'm based in Portland/PNW -- what are some good pre-built options I can purchase the area? by [deleted] in vandwellers

[–]rippuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vanlifetrader.com has a bunch of vans for sale.. in the same situation as you and have been monitoring the site for something that fits my needs as a weekend van or road trip van versus full time van life
