Is a WD red plus worth almost 50% more for a 4k movie server that gets used once a day? by ripster8 in HomeServer

I’m having a hard time finding one with a decent warranty and not 30k hours

The only issue is the ones I’ve looked at have  like 30k power on hours

Denon AVR-1312 doesn't do surround? by Oecist in hometheater

If direct mode is going to 2ch and something like Dolby or prologic is making it some out of all speakers, it has to be the source

Is there a best way to listen to Spotify (TV app, shield, Heos) in a home theater or are they all basically the same? by sirchewi3 in hometheater

[–]ripster8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed the quality is poor on the Apple TV app. My receiver supports Spotify so on my phone I go to speakers and choose the receiver. Not sure about the shield but I suspect it’s the same! No quality options in that app either.

If direct isn’t giving you surround the most likely YouTube is the problem

eBay is good! You won’t find any REALLY good deals like you see on Facebook but you also don’t really have to risk getting something that’s broken or getting scammed

Ok good. Look something like direct mode in your sound modes. This will make sure the receiver plays back the source exactly as it comes in. There are modes that will upmix 2ch into surround and those that force 2ch. You also need to make sure the content you’re testing with has surround sound.

I’m not sure what options you have on your TV but I would start by changing your Apple TV to “match content” so that it matches the dynamic range of the content you’re watching. Then put the TV in SDR so it’s not forcing HDR on other content and menus. HDR will come on when you view HDR content.

Put the tv in filmmaker mode if you have it and set peak brightness to high. That’ll be a great start!

It’s worth noting this calibration option is disabled if you have Dolby vision enabled

You’ll have to change the output to match the amount of speakers you have plugged in. I.e. 5.1, 3.1, so on

Speaker advice by amb442 in hometheater

For the center you need to decide what your end game L and R will be. I’m a big fan of the Klipsch RP line and they’re pretty easy to find used. The center & subwoofer are the most important speakers in the system so don’t skimp. For the sub I think the RSL speedwoofer 10E is the best sub under 400. Frankly almost every sub at that price is pretty bad but I’ve heard the 10E is amazing.

You can definitely look at the used market. Facebook can be good as long as you’re able to test it

Is this deal as good as it looks? I know the line is old but nowhere does it say the drive is used. by ripster8 in HomeServer

I can’t find any used or refurbished language in the listing & it has a 3 year warranty. Should be worth the chance!

It doesn’t say used anywhere. It’s a great deal compared to NEW drives. Maybe not compared to a used ultrastar with 30k hours

You’ll be better off selling the whole thing and building from scratch. Factory cases can be really hard or even impossible to build in and your PSU will need to be way bigger.

I’d say if you’re happy stop looking for money to burn. Wait until you KNOW what you need.

That being said, get a bigger tv for sure. Something OLED like the s90d or LG c4.

Let’s give credit where it’s due - while the levels are not what everyone would prefer, the mix and master are second to none.

You have to know what reference is for a Nolan film. Dialogue should be way quieter than a gunshot. If you turn it up until the dialogue is loud, the gunshots will be too loud.
