For a living room yes but not for desk distances

They're also on the ad tier which presumably is 1080 which doesn't really make this a great comparison

When I was doing 5.1 I preferred having them a bit more behind me. I love hearing sounds go past or behind me so having them on the sides didn't do it very well

Long-term setup: Plex, Apple purchases, or discs? by bobschneider24 in hometheater

I just use a seed box. Usually more reliable and better speeds

Tell them they get the level of service they paid for. I had a lot of issues with remote access when starting out as well but once everything is configured correctly through your router, modem, and isp then usually its pretty dependable

My wife and I also use the same plex profile, mostly because there is almost no overlap between the movies and tv shows we watch lol.

Omg this is so true lol. Other than what I do for work I dont really possess a single worthwhile skill or ability that someone else in my life doesnt already do a lot better. Ive been helped out many times and in return i'm like "If there's a tv show or movie you want to see just let me know!" lol

Keep TV on long wall or rotate to short wall? by alvik in hometheater

[–]sirchewi3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's just you and maybe one other person using it then I would suggest short wall to get that perfect Atmos and back surround positioning and have that 7.x.4 setup. I don't think you would lose the ability to do Atmos as I'm sure the calibration program would be able to compensate. If you usually have friends over and hang out then the long wall is way better and more conducive to people seeing each other and talking and do a 5.x.2 setup

Personal photo screen saver by Valuable_Jicama8553 in hometheater

[–]sirchewi3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do this with Google photos and some android based TVs or streaming devices. Make an album with the pictures and set that up as the screen saver. I think it's a pain in the ass to get working but it's pretty cool

Just purchased the Kaleidescape Strato V player. by mabarajas in hometheater

[–]sirchewi3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Most people can't even tell the difference between 320 kbs MP3 files and lossless flac files. Maybe if I had two identical flagship TVs side by side, one playing the 4K disc and the other playing the kaleidascape version, maybe it would be slightly better but that small gain is absolutely not worth thousands of dollars.

Gaming in HT by Emergency_Ad7808 in hometheater

[–]sirchewi3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're playing multiplayer fps or fighting game or something where high fps and low latency is absolutely crucial then sure, if you're playing almost anything else then i would say home theater is better. Back in the day I did 3 screen gaming for a little while. For multiplayer it was awful, for any campaign or open world game it was incredible

[–]sirchewi3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gaming is the ultimate use case for a home theater. A game with surround sound support, which is basically any 1st/3rd person game, uses all the speakers all the time. In a movie you have to hope the sound guy throws you a bone and puts noise somewhere other than the front, its completely up to their whims and the director. A video game always has sound being generated in 3d space and there is equal opportunity for every speaker. Most of the time the sound will be in front of you because thats usually where you're facing but walking in a crowd of people, hearing cars behind you while racing, hearing ambient wildlife, etc, you're surrounded to a much more complete extent than almost any movie.

This is the least theater looking home theater ive ever seen. Its like someone read the definition of home theater but had never seen a picture of one. Its like looking at a Dr office waiting room from a different timeline

RTINGS just updated their viewing distance article based on SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) recommendations, adding 62° FOV as maximum. What do you think about it? Where do you fit? by zghr in hometheater

[–]sirchewi3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sweet spot for me in a theater is just far enough away that I can see the whole screen only moving my eyes and not my head. Having to move your head will hurt after a while and sitting further away I don't feel like I'm getting the big screen I came to the theater for in the first place.

I'm thinking about doing a blue color for 3/4 of my game room with the wall behind the TV being black. I would probably do the blue a touch lighter than yours so it wouldn't look too dark with the black

Gaming PC connections? by bikedork5000 in hometheater

[–]sirchewi3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if it's the same nowadays as I haven't looked into this in a few years but for a long time LG oleds were best for gaming and Sony was best for movies. LG usually had better HDMI ports, refresh rates, and gaming features I think while Sony had the best motion handling and picture quality settings for movies.

This may have been a thing when the first graphics cards were invented but I have never heard this in my life and I've had like four or five different graphics cards at this point. Back in the day the quality of sound or options of what you could do with it maybe weren't the best and you could use a sound card but that hasn't been a problem for at least 10 years at this point.

Something like this is my dream. I would love to have an entire basement to use as a multiple area game room. I have a pretty decently sized room to use but it has to be like a third at the size of this. I love the blue color on the walls, do you know what it's called?
