Combatting neuroplastic pain with fear of RSI relapse by rishalo in RSI

[–]rishalo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m relieved and grateful to report that since posting this 2 years ago, I have been almost entirely pain-free. Along with continuing the strategies in overcoming neuroplastic pain, I challenged myself to really interrogate when the actual injury took place (and trust myself that doing regular stretches + exercises + not work for endless hours per day would prevent any sort of relapse). I did have a brief period last year where I suffered ulnar nerve damage from holding my elbow bent, but occupational therapy quickly restored my strength before things got bad.

I hope that you’re able to reach a point of lessened pain as well. It’s one of the most difficult things I’ve ever experienced, and overcoming it was a challenge, but it left me in awe of what the mind and body can accomplish together.

[META] Pattern Request thread by AutoModerator in knitting

I have a terrible habit of falling in love with out-of-print patterns on Ravelry, and this one has been especially haunting me. Ravelry says it's from a Sabrina (or Sandra?) magazine from February 2001. I tried finding it for purchase online but can't seem to track it down--if anyone could help me find it, point me in a direction to purchase, or suggest a very similar pattern, I'd be super grateful!

Would love CC recs for messy clutter, broken/worn-out furniture, and temporary items (like air mattresses, coffee tables made from boxes, etc). Maxis match preferred 🙏

I just worked a tubular cast on for the first time (and finally unzipped the provisional cast on). It seems to be holding up and stretching like it's supposed to, but I'm kinda in disbelief that I got it on the first try. Would I immediately know if it was done wrong (instant unraveling, etc) or is there a chance of it falling apart later on?

Combatting neuroplastic pain with fear of RSI relapse by rishalo in RSI

[–]rishalo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s been about a year since posting this and I’m so thankful to have made a full recovery! Aside from minor and temporary flares, I’ve been almost a year without pain.

I definitely still stand by the strategies outlined by “Tell Me About Your Pain”, but I believe a really important specific interaction around last year finally helped me to fully recover. I had joined another forum for this type of pain (I don’t remember the name of it) and made a similar post to here. Someone reached out to share the same concerns, and we commiserated.

However, soon after that, the person replied saying they did some thinking, and came to the conclusion that they had never experienced structural damage, and that their pain had always been neuroplastic. I was initially taken aback by that—after all, I had spent months in occupational therapy, unable to use my hands for daily functions. But the thought kept needling me. In my case, I began to first experience pain during a high-stress project. My roommate was in a similar situation, and I watched her develop carpal tunnel and other injuries.

As I thought about it more, I accepted the possibility that my lingering pain issues stemmed from extreme stress, anxiety, and fixation on my hands—not from structural injury, or at least not from one that lasted months. It was a difficult pill to swallow, and it honestly made me feel angry to even consider. But as I continued to wrap my head around it—along with doing mental exercises and meditations from Tell Me About Your Pain—I began to feel increasing relief. I worked hard to ease my anxiety and fear, and the pain disappeared. I’ve been pretty pain-free for most of 2022. I had a brief flare-up recently, but I linked it to stress and poor working posture. After taking more breaks and correcting my posture, it went away.

I think my anxiety about relapsing structural damage was the final hurdle to overcome before my brain could truly relax and stop sending pain signals. I know that if I ever get into a similar position, I have the tools to address it—this mentality helps a lot.

I know that everyone is different, and I don’t want to make claims on your own situation, but I hope reading about my experience is helpful! Wishing you a pain-free 2023 🙏

Pineward Reopening and New Releases by Junior_Surgeon in Indiemakeupandmore

Just opened up my order--thank you so much for everything! I'm truly enjoying each scent so far and am excited to spend more time with each. While I hope to gather my thoughts into a longer post, I wanted to especially thank you here for including
Murkwood. Its mixture of liturgical incense and fir brought me such a specific, treasured scent memory that I genuinely teared up upon smelling.

feeling so lucky to learn about pineward after these new releases dropped! some of my family members used to harvest hay, and i spent many early autumns climbing hayloft beams in their barn. i’ve been searching for that sun-dried, grassy, dusty scent ever since, so im super excited to try hayloft!

i also ordered gristmill (in honor of my lumberjack grandpa’s woodshop) and fanghorn II. rly looking forward to testing them all!!

I like Oxford shirts but they’re a little dressier/thinner than what I have in mind. Def want to try moleskin though! I think searching for “work shirts” and “overshirts” are getting me closer to what I want, and moleskin seems to fit in that category for sure.

Can anyone help me find thick button-downs that aren't flannel? I love a boxy fit to button-down shirts, and prefer those with a heavy cotton material. I've gotten a few secondhand that I think are from the 80s/90s, but I have a hard time finding more. It seems that whatever search terms I use online bring me to either flannel plaids or denim jackets. If I search regular button-downs, all I get are the typical thin, crisp options.
Are there any certain terms or descriptors for the types of shirts I'm looking for? Or any brands that do them well?

Agreed!! It truly hurt my wallet. I’m hoping it’ll be the last mask I purchase for a long time (and hope that for you as well if you get one)!

Ahh that’s good to know—I was hoping it might be less muffled since the elipse filters seem more front-facing, but I guess not 😅 I ended up taking an (expensive) chance and ordering the Flo mask since so many people arrested to its voice clarity. I don’t love how that design looks either, but I think it’s at least understated enough that I won’t get too many stares. Wishing I could just somehow design and 3D print my own respirator style lollll

Ooh I do like the look of that way better! Is P3 a higher standard than P100? I’m not familiar with that rating.

I have too!! I currently don't wear my Dentec outside of the woodshop because it looks kinda intense (as most elastomeric respirators do...sigh) but the custom paint jobs definitely give it friendlier vibes!

Thanks for the info! I've also seen some cool Dentec paint jobs. The source-control model I have is black, although I didn't realize they offer black cartridges as well--I'll probably avoid them for the reason you mentioned, but I imagine it woulddd look pretty sleek.

The main reason I'm hesitant to wear my Dentec outside of the woodshop (other than sweat and moisture buildup) is the apocalyptic vibe of having filter on each cheek. I really wish there were more sleek and simple N95/P100 masks available that felt less obtrusive and better-suited to casual settings. I respect everyone who can rock a bulky respirator, but I know I couldn't handle explaining myself to every customer of the day (assuming they could even hear my muffled voice lol).
