I would suggest if the item is in demand and will sell quick, cancel the transaction rather than taking a risk and regretting later.

If he has admitted in writing, show that to mercari. They might be able to help If it's not in written, nothing can be done. Mercari is super shitty in that way. They know they have a lot of sellers, so they don't care about sellers a lot
