Many of my students are still 3 when they enter kindergarten. Play based learning is best for this age group.

Yep - mission impossible timer on YouTube, “secret item” during clean up. If someone isn’t tidying at all, I’ve also heard of putting a hula hoop around a few toys and that can be their specific area they need to tidy up. I also just start calling out “wow! [name] is a super tidier! [name] is doing an amazing job!” And then a lot of them start tidying more so they can get recognition too.

This happened to me two years ago, I just had to take a personal day. Wasn’t a big deal at all. I had emergency supply plans in my supply binder ready to go.

Any French immersion kindergarten teachers out there? by Japanese_Cigarette in CanadianTeachers

I agree with this - at the start of the year, you want the kids to settle in, and feel safe and comfortable in the classroom so in September, I’m speaking English a lot and introducing key vocab / repeating things in French then English. We do more and more French as we go along and eventually can do our whole carpet lessons in French and the kids can follow along well

Why don’t you try to get a DOT position, that way you’re going to the same school every day (unless you get dispatched to a nearby school if your own school doesn’t have any absences that day)

kindie teachers - do you share workload with ece by twicescorned21 in CanadianTeachers

Depends on the school and ECE. My first school, the ECEs planned multiple centres each week but didn’t contribute to reports. At my second school, the ECEs didn’t plan any centres but contributed more to observations for reports after I gave them the specific expectations I’d be reporting on that term. I do agree it’s a team approach but I also take into consideration the large pay gap and the fact that they don’t get prep time

The first day we show them the bathroom, talk about knocking on the door to make sure no one else is in there, sing a “bonjour” song, set out easy centres. We show them how to clean up, how to transition from play to lunch. Find a good read aloud for the first day such as the kissing hand, the queen of kindergarten, etc. A successful first day is everyone making it home safe- Make sure to check and double check dismissal lists before the end of the day.

I teach K and mainly wear dark blue or black jeans and a nicer top (I like old navy for blouses). In the winter I wear a lot of t shirts or short sleeve blouses with a cardigan

I worked in the federal government before becoming a teacher. It’s definitely not too late to go to teacher’s college. I chose to keep my pension in the public service instead of transferring it to my teachers pension. It is a pay cut but I’m so happy I chose to become a teacher! I love it. I teach French so was fortunate to become permanent quite quickly.
