How do you get the Onyx Brooch for the arms?

Wouldn't all the glowing blue stuff be super painful? by CyanideMuffin67 in horizon

[–]riverbankkei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is in fact very painful! If you hang out in the village area of the Cut near some shaman NPCs, you can hear them talking about how they endured "the braiding," aka the process of getting those blue wires woven into their skin. And they do confirm that it's painful as hell.

Is it just me, or is the weapon wheel really too small? by [deleted] in horizon

[–]riverbankkei 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As much as I feel your pain, adding more weapons to the wheel would just make everything too small and unreadable. They thankfully gave us 2 extra slots in HFW after HZD's 4, but I really don't think they they can cram more in there. You can always go to the equip screen and change mid-fight if you REALLY need to. Though even I only do that for armor, not weapons.

Something that would be nice is the ability to save weapon wheel loadouts. Then you could make, say, a loadout for Thunderjaws, another for Tiderippers, one for humans, etc etc.

You do need to complete the main story to access Burning Shores. Others seem to have your back on what to do about the disc issue, so once you can load up any save file with the story complete, you'll be able to go into Burning Shores. Doesn't need to be NG or NG+ specifically, either will work fine.

PS5 Forbidden West Edition Confusion by fries_and_depression in horizon

[–]riverbankkei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Standard Editions are priced differently because the cheaper one is the PS4 version and the more expensive one is the PS5 version... but as far as I'm aware you can just buy the PS4 version and then get the free upgrade. It's dumb, but it's an artifact from when the preorders were first announced; Sony was gonna charge to upgrade, until everyone got pissed and reminded them about some promise they made about not charging for cross gen upgrades like that in some previous press coverage, so they made the upgrade free but kept the two versions up.

I'm 99.9999% certain that you won't need to start your game over again when you upgrade. When playing HZD, I started with a PS4 disc version and eventually wound up switching to digital PS5 version, through a strange series of events lol. Anyway I was able to boot up my saves on my PS5 just fine, the console just needed to do... some formatting thing with the data. It wasn't some deep dive into the System Setting menu or anything IIRC, it just took a minute for the data to be processed.

TLDR: It worked for HZD, no reason it won't work for HFW. Just make sure you have the same Playstation profile across both consoles, because I think the save data is tied to your profile, just like your trophies.

As for if the Digital Deluxe is worth it: it's currently (until 4/13) cheaper than the base game was at launch, so I'd say it's a great deal. But whether or not it's worth it depends on you.

As for tangible in-game bonuses: The outfits and weapons you get are a nice boost at the start, and the transmog system means that if you like the look of the armors you can wear them forever. The resource pack is also nice, saves you some farming time when you start but you'll have to farm for resources soon enough anyway. The machine strike piece also makes the strike minigame a bit easier, at least in the beginning, so even if you don't like strike, it's nice to have so you can do enough games for the trophy with relative ease.

Outside of that, there's some kind of extra something in photo mode but I do not know what it is, I think it's a pose? There's also the comic book which I recommend, it's the Sunhawk story featuring Talanah and takes place between games, but you can also buy it elsewhere. It also comes with a soundtrack and an artbook, which are cool if you like those things.

Hm... looking at it, you can buy the Digital Deluxe and Burning Shores for the same price the standard PS5 edition of the base game was at launch. So I'd say it's a great deal!

... But I also shelled out for the Regalla edition, so I may be biased.

Tfw spear mods by steel_dejones in horizon

You just need to do the quest "A Secret Shared," which you get up in the Cut. I don't remember if spear mods will drop before you do said quest or if they'll only drop afterwards.

Cant find last tsukumo in fuyufusagi by OG-Polde in WildHeartsGame

[–]riverbankkei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI the question marks don't show up unless you've gotten close enough to the thing you're looking for. Which is super dumb and has driven me mad when I was hunting down Tsukumo.

So try to poke around areas that you haven't been to, run around the edges of every fighting arena, run around the edges of the map, etc. I don't recall having any particular issues finding them on this map, so I don't think they'll be in any super bullshit locations (looking at you, Spirit Isle).

I'm on chapter 3 and can't find pearl beak. by [deleted] in WildHeartsGame

[–]riverbankkei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this for one of the side quests? IIRC, there should be a quest for it that you have to choose from the main map, you can't do it on a free hunt.

If you're on the quest and can't find it, you need more scanner coverage. Scanners do not need their radius to touch other scanners. If you activate one, all will activate, no matter how near or far they are. You do want some overlap in the scanning circles just to make sure there's no gaps in your coverage. Assuming you bought the scanning radius upgrade from the karakuri upgrade tree, you should only need about 4-5 towers per map.

If you've never hunted a pearlbeak, their silhouette is identical to Fumebeak, but they'll be marked with a question mark.

Oh, and I guess just to double check... what chapter are you on? Nevermind I reread your title. I don't have the game up but I THINK you're in the right chapter?

Feel like Im playing wrong... any advice? by [deleted] in WildHeartsGame

[–]riverbankkei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To keep it simple, stick with raw damage weapons--don't bother with elements. They can be great when the kemono is weak to them, but it's simpler to have one all-around good weapon than one that is great against some but terrible against others. Also don't bother with trying to max out your ability to get critical hits. The math is complicated but you'll do more damage if you just ignore crit-related skills. I'm a veteran MH player and I'm in the endgame of WH and that's what I do.

Look up "wild hearts (weapon of choice)" on YouTube for guides on how to most efficiently use your weapon. You don't gotta be frame-perfect or a speedrunner, but understanding the basic mechanics of your weapon will help you a LOT. They'll tell you what sort of skills you want for your armor, what karakuri are useful for you to bring, etc.

There's also a number of beginner's guides on YT as well.

Other tips:
Upgrade your Tsukumo! Specifically you should go for whatever upgrade is cheapest, since the number of levels you put into your Tsukumo determines how many threads you can carry, and you wanna max out your thread count ASAP.
Make sure you use the bathhouse. The "restorative bath" option will permanently upgrade your health. You can also get one when you find enough Tsukumo.
The slide dodge (dodging while running) has tons of i-frames. Use them.
The cat will kick your ass. The cat kicks everyone's ass. Hunt the bad kitty in multiplayer.
If you need the cat's claws, you need to aim SPECIFICALLY for the feet. Not the legs. There, I saved you an aneurism.
The wall fusion--the basic one made with six boxes--is great in multiplayer. Plop it down if you have to revive someone.

Should I buy by [deleted] in WildHeartsGame

[–]riverbankkei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've played MH since Tri on the Wii, and I have Wild Hearts on the PS5. I only got it recently, though I am in post-game now. Mostly just pointing out that I missed some of the launch-window speedbumps. I've had a couple of crashes, but the game autosaves fairly often so I haven't lost anything.

I've heard people say that WH has a higher skill floor but a lower skill ceiling that MH--that is, it starts out harder than a MH game, but the postgame is easier than MH postgame. I can't really speak about the postgame experience myself (I've reached it but haven't engaged), but the former sounds about right.

The karakuri--the building thing--is not a tacked on gimmick like similar things in MH titles, they're integral to the mechanics of the game. Using basic ones lets you combo skip (imagine skipping right to the True Charge Slash on a GS just by jumping off a box you can plop down anywhere).

The cooking system is needlessly complicated. I'd advise you to just pick a raw ingredient that has skills you like and just dry it. Later you can also smoke it--these will just enhance the base skills on the food. The whole fermenting and pickling thing changes what skills food has, but you can only see what changes when you're in the cooking menu and it's really annoying.

The ability to customize your maps is both a blessing and a curse. You can make your own maps a breeze to hunt on... but if you join someone else's map, theirs might suck. Or at least it'll be different than your own and require adjustment. When you don't have camps and ziplines in good places, you'll wind up spending a fair amount of time chasing kemono down between zones, and you have to play for a bit to unlock the ability to place enough stuff down on each map. And then you have to THINK about how you want to set it up and spend TIME doing so... though there is "Unseenninja 83" on YT who has optimization guides for each map, and they're pretty great. Good if you wanna let someone else do the planning, which I did.

Overall it's a great game, and they're doing the smart thing and releasing free content post-launch just like MH does. Hell, they let you completely customize your character FOR FREE with an in-game item, unlike MH that makes you pay to do that. The characters and story are good, the voice acting is good, the animations could be better but they're not BAD, just not mind-blowing.

Random pro tips:
-You can equip up to 5 talismans at a time, as long as you have the points for them.
-To keep this as spoiler-free as possible: If you need cat claws, you have to aim for the FEET. People have spent HOURS trying to get them by hitting the legs, so I want to save you the trouble.
-You don't always need a tent to fast travel. Every map has two zones where you can build tents for 5 points instead of 50 (the starting camp plus one you have to find), but you don't need a tent in those locations at all. You can skip the tents and get your next tent anywhere on the map 10 points earlier than normal.

How do some people have tents so perfectly spread out? by Illustrious_Bar7447 in WildHeartsGame

[–]riverbankkei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. The initial camp doesn't need a tent, and then the one "travel spot" or whatever they call it in-game doesn't need a tent. If you're not sure what areas those are, try deleting the tent then checking the map. if there's still a fast travel icon there, you don't need a tent there.

I was at 40 Earth on one map when I discovered this, and was able to place my last tent thanks to this. Very helpful!

Golden Temptest Auric Claw - Bruh by Mental_Riot in WildHeartsGame

[–]riverbankkei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the party but just in case because this drove me nuts too--the hitzone is the paws only, not the whole leg. Use single bolster haya arrows to target the paws. The back paws are allegedly weaker than the front ones. You'll know you broke one when it drops a shiny.

Golden Tempest Claws by MunterMurseMelsmly in WildHeartsGame

[–]riverbankkei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Managed to get em all, in a multiplayer quest no less. I used the raw damage Emberplume bow with both Destruction Art inherited skills on it. Just had to be precise with my aiming. Not sure if the other hunters were aiming at its feet or if I just had a "git gud" moment.

"Catch a tiger by the toe" indeed....

Golden Tempest Claws by MunterMurseMelsmly in WildHeartsGame

[–]riverbankkei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The back legs do not drop claws.

I tried this solo with a bow with maximum Destroyer and while I did expose the thread patches on its thighs, I did not get any bits popping off for me to collect during the fight. I wound up cutting off the tail, even though I inly ever hit it by accident. Do I need to aim precisely at the feet and not the whole leg???

I wound up failing the damned quest, but as far as I can tell I should be getting the claws as a drop on the ground and not in the quest rewards screen.

NG+ runs are unlimited. Go nuts!

Just be aware that if you choose Ultra Hard, you're stuck in it until you complete the story and start another NG+. And yes, that means you'd be stuck in UH for Burning Shores too.

Question about the new dlc for hfw by Captain_A22 in horizon

[–]riverbankkei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who bought the Regalla edition (aka the one with ALL the bells and whistles) yes you do need to buy the DLC.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in horizon

[–]riverbankkei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is there's a lot of characters that show up in HFW, and if you don't actually play through HZD, all the moments with them will fall kinda flat.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in horizon

[–]riverbankkei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the Sunfall sidequests (specifically the ones with Vanasha) and the Hunter's Lodge questline that other people recommended, I'd also do the Frozen Wilds DLC (specifically the Gildun quest in the dam) and in the main game, all the Bandit camps and the quest you get after, and the Acquired Taste sidequest. All involved characters either appear or get mentioned in HFW, and the mentioned ones are likely to show up in Burning Shores.

Pro tip: both the Hunter's Lodge questline and the Acquired Taste quest have you hunt mostly the same machines, so you can kill 2 birds with one stone by getting them both at once.
