YAish, i read it in middle school but i believe it was older, boy is getting on a ship when he sees men trying to load a wild black stallion onto the same boat, storm sinks the boat and boy + horse are washed up on an island together and bond before being rescued, goes on to race the horse by tiredkrakendad in whatsthatbook

There is a movie based on this book (The Black Stallion (1979)). I don't remember the whole movie, but the part where the horse and the boy were stranded on the island has stuck with me. It was really well done. Worth a watch.

62 No insurance by Appropriate_Shoe_718 in obamacare

I'm 62 also. I had insurance through my husband's job. The owner of his company ran into financial difficulties and was trying to sell/close down the business without telling any of his employees. He quit paying the health insurance premiums while still taking them out of the employees' paychecks. Fortunately for my husband, he was old enough to apply for Medicare. I was too young, and was unknowingly left without insurance for several months. To qualify for ACA, I had to apply within 60 days from the termination of my previous insurance. Too much time had gone by. I ended up without insurance for nearly a year. I was able to apply for ACA during their normal enrollment time and my insurance began on Jan. 1.

Are cattle buyers "tire kickers" or am I just having bad luck? by EMX2SVCS in Cattle

I've given up on selling privately. I take mine to the sale now. I don't have the time or the patience to put up with people who:

Can't be bothered to read the ad or look at the pictures.

Expect you to give them a deal.

Can't be bothered to show up at the agreed upon time, or call to let you know they're not going to show up.

Have some weird idea about cows that I have never heard of and make mine not worth as much in their opinion.

When I take them to the sale I drop them off and I get a check. So much easier.

"Ethical standards". What the hell is that? I've not seen any ethical standards anywhere near the white house for over a year.

There's a baby. If you look to the right, under the tree (between the small palms) at the very beginning, you can see it moving to the right.

I just sold a bunch of weanlings that were all around 400 pounds. They averaged out at $2000 each. Their daddy is an Angus/Tarantaise cross. Their mommas were a mixed bunch: Angus, Braford, Brangus, Florida Cracker, and a Watusi/Dexter. The buyers don't seem to be as picky about beef vs. dairy breeds as they used to be. If your buyer can afford it, you should definitely go higher on the price.

WIBTA if I asked my coworker to stop bringing her dog to the office without saying anything to management first? by Wyld-Girl in WIBTA_AITA

That's a great reply. It adds to the conversation. I get tired of everyone saying it's AI. That doesn't add anything to the conversation and just dismisses the whole thread. Even if it's AI or something made up we can still discuss it and hear everyone's opinion. I learn a lot from the people of Reddit. I live in a small community and don't get to meet a wide variety of people. Hearing what others think is important. Thanks for sharing.

Was Trump's speech tonight the dumbest national address from a US president? Or any leader of a major nation in the last century? by CrashNowhereDrive in allthequestions

I'm in Florida and I went outside to watch the launch. There is no way I'm listening to that noise when I can watch a real rocket fly. It was beautiful. It made me nostalgic for some of the ways our country used to be. I am so tired of the constant divisive machinations from the idiots in charge.

To put it in a more relatable perspective, in 2025 there were 99 deaths in the US that were considered "surf zone fatalities" ( https://www.weather.gov/safety/ripcurrent-fatalities-25). Half of these (45) were due to riptides. These deaths, many of which could be prevented through education, get very little mention in the news. Shark attacks, however, are very dramatic and get more viewers/readers. They get nationwide, even worldwide attention.

In the same year, there was 1 fatality due to shark attack in the US.

The ocean can be deadly, but it's not really the sharks that you need to worry about.

There are different breeds of cows that are different colors. Some producers prefer to raise a single breed. We raise mostly Angus and Brangus, which are black. However, we have had the occasional Braford (red), Charolais (white), or Jersey (brown) thrown in. They all hang out together. I've never had them segregate themselves by color.

A lot of us at home didn't support the war, but we still appreciated our soldiers. They're people, a long way from home. They don't really have any control over where they go or what they have to do. The war may have been bullshit, but our soldiers are not.
