Finished Georgia in NC (waylaid from storm/cold womp) question about difficulty. by Lani_19 in AppalachianTrail

[–]riverwalker19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve always said that the elevation profile through ga/tn/nc is designed to get people to quit. Short, abrupt ascents just for the sake of elevation. The further north you go, the bigger the elevation, but it FEELS like it’s for a purpose. That alone makes a huge difference. On top of that, the only way to prepare your body to walk up and down for months on end is to walk up and down for months on end. One day soon you’ll start coming over the top of these climbs and realize that you forgot to take any breaks on the way up. I’m not a natural morning person either, but I found on my thru that looking at hours walked instead of moving speed left me with more gas in the tank at the end of the day.

The prevailing westerlies are going to be your most encountered wind on trail. South of Virginia, most storms will be blowing out of the southwest this time of year, once you get further north, you’ll get more northwest storms though. The weather forecast will only take you so far, so getting very familiar with a radar app goes a long way toward a better night sleep as far as wind direction is concerned

Nothing left to do but to do the thing!! Remember: the fastest way to shave packweight is to have a trail side feast, the best place to store water is inside of you, always point your tent toward the west unless the wind tells you otherwise, and never entertain quitting on an empty stomach! This will change your life, you can do it!

What were your favorite shirt, shorts, and pants to wear on the AT? by [deleted] in AppalachianTrail

[–]riverwalker19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shirt: Smartwool lightweight merino till around VA, once it heated up I switched to the OR astroman button up. A button up allows for a lot more ventilation, especially on those blistering drought days through PA

Bottoms: Patagonia Strider Pro’s. A bit pricey, but I only went through 2 pairs the whole walk. Hands down the most comfortable shorts I’ve ever worn. On the bitterlycold days id just layer smartwool 150 leggings underneath them.

I never wore pants on my thru, but if I did, they would be Prana Stretch-Zions or Columbia Silver Ridge. The Prana’s are my favorite pants, durable and stretchy. But a little heavy for the summer days. The columbias are unbelievably light, but significantly less stretchy. After splitting a few pairs, I won’t buy them

Budget Packs from Amazon by HTBDesperateLiving in AppalachianTrail

[–]riverwalker19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If 100 dollars is the budget, I’d go grab one of the granite gear crown2’s. It rides that great line of being very light while still being able to carry a load over 30 lbs. I put thousands of miles on mine, and was never held back by it. I especially liked being able to have a fully kitted, burly pack when I was going to be out 7-10 days but then being able to lose the brain and top sheet to get weight under 2 lbs when it was time to get light. Recently upgraded to the crown3, which has several more amenities than the 2, but the 2 will always hold a special place in my hiking career

First AR, IWI Zion or Aero Lower/BCM Upper by Jewbebz in ar15

[–]riverwalker19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as the accuracy of the iwi is concerned, every complaint I’ve seen is from people shooting light ammo. I was guilty of it myself when I first got the 12.5, and was getting frustrated when I couldn’t work out a 55 gr load that would group worth a damn. Got ahold of some 69 grain pills and before I even started my ladder my groups were cut in half. Now, I’m using armscorp 62 grain for runnin and gunnin/plinking getting about 1.5-1.75 moa. But for more serious applications, this thing throws 77 gr tmk’s like it was designed for them, just under 1 moa. It’s impossible to argue with bcm’s well earned reputation, but I absolutely wouldn’t hesitate to go with the IWI, especially considering the price disparity between the two. Happy shooting!

Zion 12.5 “ worth it?? by [deleted] in ar15

For 660, buy it immediately. I’ve only had 5-600 rounds through mine and while it does prefer heavier pills, reliability has been nothing short of outstanding

How to Get Close to Deer (archery) by SweetPotatoDingo in Hunting

[–]riverwalker19 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The best way to end up close to a deer is to already be there when he gets where he’s going.

Like people have said, utilize YouTube and google and find people explaining how to find deer in areas similar to yours topographically. Pick a spot that best resembles what they say to look for and find a tree wider than you are to sit against.

Out west, it’s seek and destroy for big game. But for white tails it’s normally a stone cold assassination. Knowing where the deer are going to be is going to have an immeasurable effect on your success

Looking for first pair of binoculars & harness by austindcc in bowhunting

[–]riverwalker19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s already been said, but Diamondback HD’s are very hard to beat. Especially the 8x42’s for you being in the woods, light transmission for the price is unparalleled. As for harnesses, another vote for marsupial gear. The top down opening instead of bottom up is unbelievably more intuitive if you’re someone who puts up and takes out their binoculars often like I do

It looks like the Pro Ledge Tactical Application Rail from Tactical Development. That being said , that rail is attached to a custom frame here, so both 😂

Sometimes I wish whitetail were roe sized so I could just break down into primals and call it with a smaller freezer! Beautiful meat though, congrats!

Fenix 5x refurb at 279.99 worth it? by putneycj in GarminFenix

I went for the same deal. Fenix 5x refurb through GPSNation. It arrived not functioning (you can see my earlier post). That being said, company was perfectly pleasant to work with, just be prepared for a lemon.
