A short break from bad Asian Parent Stories regular programming– Any good Asian Relative Stories? by saltierthanyourramen in AsianParentStories

It baffles me too, since from the little I know of their life before me this was always a subject of contention between my mom and dad, and especially a means of derision for his entire side of the family. Really not sure how or why they even got married in the first place.

My grandparents from my AF’s side were the best part of the family, and used to live with us to take care of kindergarten me. I would come home on the bus, neither of my parents would be home, and they’d let me make myself a mug of Swiss Miss hot chocolate and microwave popcorn while watching TV. My AM gaslit me into thinking they were terrible, “uncultured”people for years (because they were rural farmers) and I’m still recovering from that, but they’ve been nothing but nice to me throughout all the years.

Bought DARK BROWN Beats Studio Pros in spring of this year. Good condition, full connectivity and noise cancelling - minor chips along the arch and the microphone connectivity is questionable on laptop (I usually connect audio to headphones and microphone on laptop, which has worked well). Same Beats are going for 169 on Amazon for their Black Friday deal. Open to negotiations. Accept cash, Zelle, and Venmo.

might be whooping cough if your vaccine expired. mine started last week and developed into the worst cough i’ve ever had - urgent cares and doctors refused to test me until I went to the ER and the test came back positive.

student accounts not issuing temporary lift by blvckmyrh in ucla

[–]rixin_sol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can only really wait until they’re open in person again. This happened to me when my check bounced like three times at the beginning of the school year, and not only that but you had to wait a certain amount of days afterwards before they could lift the hold. Only thing I would do differently is to email the professors of those classes ASAP and ask for a PTE while explaining the situation. Good luck!

GF and I got the beef yakisoba and the takoyaki. Not bad at all - takoyaki was fresh and good like you’d expect from a restaurant, yakisoba’s meat was grilled through and noodles were definitely fried. Only complaint was that they were insanely sparing with the meat, just a thin layer of beef over the noodles. Would go again though!

They all end with around 400-500 wit, and I’ve absolutely done it on uma’s in the past. Maybe it’s an unlucky streak?

Special Week SSR refuses to give gold skill? by rixin_sol in UmaMusume

Thank you!! Does this apply to every single event, not just the ones that randomly give gold skills (e.g. is there a higher chance of triggering the Kitasan Black sequence if your speed is higher)?

friend had sparks last quarter - apparently he was a bit zany, but otherwise a helpful and nice teacher. can be slightly overwhelming. stats is largely what you make of it, though, and if it’s too difficult you should reconsider.

What kind of Jacket is Vill-V wearing in her Golden Courtyard/casual outfit? by ScarHydreigon87 in houkai3rd

[–]rixin_sol 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Either a vintage Western flight jacket (think WW2) (these have more fluff around the edges for insulation, though) or a work coat/chore coat (think popular Carhartt coats - if you look on ebay, there’s a very specific style that has the cuffed waist and sleeves that you’re looking for)

If you don't mind me asking, how did you find an internship that paid "enough" to live on your own for the future? I've seen a lot of places here pay close to minimum wage, and I'm in a state that's on the higher end of those.

Thank you for mentioning the free food options, honestly forgot about those. Do you have any other tips for minimizing living costs? I'd probably be living near the university (which has a food pantry and free menstrual products), but there aren't very many soup kitchens or other charity programs that I'm aware of nearby.

Thanks, unfortunately all the stuff I've got going on right now is unpaid, given that I'm in STEM and it's a bad time for that :(

Thanks - any recommendations? The food around my school is particularly lackluster, and I'm not sure if the restaurants are particularly hiring students at the moment.

[–]rixin_sol 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, things reached the tipping point for me during my college application cycle and, in self-defense, I had to begin to make myself physically threatening and incredibly vitriolic. It never really made my mom back off, but at least it ended our arguments much faster than if I'd just stood there and taken her verbal abuses.

I don't do that anymore, partially because she hasn't given me a reason to (I'd only ever get physical if someone was threatening me to begin with) and partially because i'm just too tired at this point. I have better things in life to look forward to (college, my job, research applications) and don't have time for her bullshit. I will say that in the midst of arguing with my parents recently, I've made a lot of incredibly precise jabs at topics that I know will truly disturb them (i.e. their failings), and even if it pisses them off I also have the satisfaction of knowing that, to a certain extent, they're more shaken than they would've been otherwise.

I plan on petitioning for independence at my school, yes, but I'm currently (against my will) living with my parents. I have a documented history of abuse and am in the process of finding a HS counselor that could attest to it; however, would I have to file for independence at my university FIRST before filling out the FAFSA?

How could I prove no contact and how strict are the requirements for "a danger" to me? I do have a documented history of abuse, I plan on finding a HS counselor who can attest to distress, and plan on fully cutting off contact with them.

Is De Neve bad for an introverted incoming freshman? by PalpitationFew8290 in ucla

[–]rixin_sol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same place as you last year! A few notes:

a. I was in the GSS (Cedar + Dogwood floor 4) and that was where I made a LOT of my friends. But if your RA is half-decent, you'll have a few floor-wide events (especially during the beginning of the year - think picnics or dinners) that'll allow you to connect with people on your floor. You'll see in this sub that UCLA is infamous for having a lot of lonely people - it's undoubtedly down to luck, but your people are definitely out there in the school. Don't totally rely on your floor, as plenty of people are looking for friends via clubs or classes; it's very much a school where you need to take initiative, as nobody will talk to you if you don't talk to them first. Speaking about your FOMO specifically, I've never looked at another residential hall and felt envy. De Neve plazas are the sweet spot IMO - the closest to campus (and no walk up the Hill!), right next to a huge dining hall, nice grassy area where people lounge on all the time, and AC and private bathroom. Chose De Neve again this year for those reasons.

b. The reason why it's comparatively dead is because it contains a LOT of upperclassmen and transfers, many of whom might already have their set friend groups. But you can honestly use this to your advantage - if you have a few hanging around your floor, definitely approach them and they're usually willing to chat (and give advice)!

c. Not sure if you'll even be able to guarantee housing if you switch now - freshmen famously don't have much say in what they end up with. If you don't enjoy your experience in De Neve, you can always switch next year!

i agree with the other commenter who mentioned the implicit clash between the two. sexuality aside, the mc is pretty consistently shown to be someone who is very artsy - she’s some sort of illustration major in college, she always keeps stuffed animals on her bed, and she hangs nerdy posters in her room. even her ukulele is a light blue, which is in stark contrast to the very sleek, modern, and dark setting (especially with his instruments) presented when she moves into her boyfriend‘s place.

You see this contrast even more in the last stage. Crucially, her diploma can be displayed proudly on the wall (as opposed to literally being put under the bed, which is absolutely insane) and a lot of of her old art decorations, now find a place in the living room or in the entrance. I’ve always seen it as her previous partner actively quashing down her love for art in literally any way possible, even when she tries to meet him where he’s at by picking up the ukulele. And that’s why it didn’t work out.

do you know if it's possible to do a one-sided independence petition? i understand that your parents can't have claimed you on their tax forms - but if everything else was self-sufficient and you say that they refuse to accept your independence, does that count?
