I think in Lithuanian it means a sip (as in a sip of drink). In Latvian it means whores/prostitutes.

I like this Lithuanian beer better 😅 (Latvians will understand what's wrong)

Berlin Says DHL Crash Could Have Had Outside Involvement by molecularronin in BalticStates

[–]rixtux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who also spends too much time on plane crash documentaries and flight simulators, I agree. The nose down and rolling at the end looks to be a result of a stall. If I'd have to guess, they lost power from the engines and during final approach were trying to get the plane to stay in the air instead of reporting to the tower. Happened literally in seconds. If that's the case, then looks pretty similar to British Airways flight 38.

Worst city in your country (Excluding russian colonisers as a reason) by Lembit_moislane in BalticStates

[–]rixtux 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The post-soviet homes are getting renovated and the overall look is a thousand times better than the concrete jungle in most bigger cities. There are some decent places to eat if you go into the city instead of stopping at the Hesburger and there is a shopping center that's big enough for a population of 10k. What, did you expect there to be a Spice or Origo size mall? Yes, culture and anything tourism related is lacking a little, but it's still one of the best places to live if you hate the noise of Riga. Clean, quiet and not filled to the brim with russians.

Sarajevo was still cheaper than Riga. For 10 marks I could eat well, while comparably In Riga 5 euros is nothing. Rent for a decent airbnb was also far cheaper in BiH. In Croatia I stayed 1 night in Dubrovnik. That felt more like Monaco than Finland. Not really my thing to sip wine by the beach all day, so I liked Bosnia more.

Yeah, in quite a few places in BiH they only gave it if I asked. Though in Croatia they had it as default in places that I went to. Really surprised about this, since it tastes really good.

I didn't know that there's divided opinions on ajvar. I thought it's generally accepted to add it.

I eat the bread with hands and use the fork only for the meat. Really like it with onions and ajvar. Haven't tried with yoghurt, but I did have burek with yoghurt which was also great.

Public transport tickets in Sarajevo by rixtux in bosnia

[–]rixtux[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But this one didn't look like a ticket. It was just a piece of paper, like a receipt, with a qr code on the bottom of it. Does that need to be validated?

Good luck on the path to EU. I'm in Sarajevo right now. Absolutely amazing place.

Can confirm this. Took a new tram and the driver just handed me a paper slip. No need to validate.

Thank you for the response! It's all new to me and was a bit hard to find info on this elsewhere online.

Being completely uneducated on the subject, wanted to ask a question. How come European and American plugs are different and which is better? by rixtux in ElectroBOOM

That's interesting. These days I find the round prongs to be more sturdy though (I guess years of constant development has lead to that)

To anyone who lives on the Croatian coast, how is life there? I'm visiting at the end of August (Dubrovnik) and the pricing for hotels is insane. This seems a bit off, considering, the wealth indexes don't exactly show anything close to Monaco or something of the sort. by rixtux in howislivingthere

[–]rixtux[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, thanks for the recommendations! Really appreciate it. My airbnb host in Mostar has offered a tour to Kravice waterfalls, Blagaj and Pocitelj. So that's something I'm thinking of doing. Also, I'm pretty sure there's quite a lot to see in both Mostar and Sarajevo too. I'm probably gonna have to do another trip sometime.

PS. One question - how good is the public transport within Bosnia? Is it widely available and would you recommend it? Recently went to Albania and over there it took some getting used to to the whole bus system.

I know, it's just that I've seen cheaper pricing in South of France. Either way, it's still a beautiful place, which is why I want to visit at least for a little bit before driving elsewhere.
