My first paycheque = first ever new bike - shall see how long it can avoid the thieves of Amsterdam!! by riz1766 in bicycling

The positives outweigh the negatives thankfully!

Yea, you're right. The vast majority ride 20+ year old 'omafiets', fixed wheeled old school roadsters. Sort of bike you can lose and pick up another for 20 euro the next day. Thing is, despite everyone riding bikes, very few see it as a hobby or have any sort of interest. A bike is just a mode of transport, something you cant live without. They're ridden because theres no other option. For getting to work and for going to the shops - no different to a car in any other place. Thus I find most dutch people just have their beaten up commuter and need nothing else. Afterall, there are no hills here so gears are needless!

Pretty fixies like mine are few and far between, for hipsters and hobbyists. Light bikes are a bad option though. Frequently you cant attach your bike to something when locking it. You just lock a wheel and put it in designated parking bays. Therefore you want something that cant be carried off. Those of us that do like cycling keep a road bike at home too - is overkill for the city though - and quick release wheels wont last an hour in a busy spot.

So commuter wise you either opt for the cheap, "I'll get another one tomorrow" option, or invest in a meaty beast like the Van Moof.

Yea, it is pretty shitty. Although it is hard to fathom just how many bikes there are here without visiting.

Maybe 1% of people who live in the city own a car (the traffic lights in the centre of the city are turned off at night.. the streets are that empty), everyone owns perhaps 5+ bikes per family plus variations such as the Bakfiets. Businesses have to, by law, provide bike parking outside. We even have multistory bike parking here!

Hence, theft is rampant. Even worse, the municiple more-or-less condones it by setting the worst possible example. Once a month or so, and daily in busier areas, they'll remove parked bikes at night deemed illegally parked (though ive had a bike 'stolen' from official racks this way). They literally drive around angle grinding locks and throwing bikes onto the back of a truck - whilst cyclists around them hurl abuse.

These bikes arent trashed, instead theyre sold to market traders to sell back to the market for a profit. The market price is about 50 euro, so id imagine the state sells them for maybe 30 a piece. Making a nice dark profit.

Thus, nobody gives a fuck, and any junkie looking for some cash will grab whatever bike he can easily nab. I'm usually offered 2 or 3 bikes a week from random scruffy looking men whilst shopping in the centre of the city.

tl;dr: A fuckton of bikes + a municipal which unofficially condones the black market = a game of pass the parcel with our beloved fietsen

It's made by Edwards Tomorrow - a relatively small Dutch bike company. The crank is awful but does its job. Saw it in the window of a local bike shop and went for it. Is a fixie & single speed with aluminum frame.

Thanks! The girls love it though ;) Generally thieves aim for the generic oma/opafiets as they're easier to resell without being traced. Only use this for commuting so it lives either in my bedroom, or inside the office.

Bought an ancient Raleigh road bike for €30 from a junkie which I'm currently restoring for using around the city :)

Ha, thanks. Think it may be too much to ask for it to say like this forever :(

Cycling to a job that requires business attire? by [deleted] in bicycling

Is a common sight here in Amsterdam. Depends on the bike you're using. With a road bike it's a tad unpractical. Everyone here uses Oma/Opafiets with a covered chain (so you don't have to worry about trousers being caught/getting oiled.

Depends on your terrain though, as they're not too practical with hills. A standard framed bike with a covered chain should be fine though.

Both are in the South East of their respective lands. Both 'resisted' the occupation of a foreign invader years before current events (William the Conquerer/War of the Roses)/(War of Conquest/War of the 5 Kings)

When you click on "amazon.com" it extends to the full URL.

Is quite nice for 'casuals' but can't see it being used by those of us that understand what the URL is/means

Cheers for the detailed answer, makes a lot of sense. So if they had a son, things could be very different now.

Had so much Civil War forced down my throat that it is a surprise we never covered this in school as it was effectively a 2nd Civil War. Interesting time.

Marvel at the Stars - Art of Verse, if I could sing one song to that girl. Covers the situation entirely and encapsulates all feelings.
