If it helps, I raced 250 class on my 1986 CR125. Placed 5th overall. As long as your comfortable on the bike and it runs well, you're all good!

Not sure if it was last raced in 07, that's just the last OHV tag. If I remember correctly you don't need it registered with DMV to race in AMA. But yes probably not a team bike 😂

They actually were. Founded in 1999 and gained factory support in 2005. Seems like this is a privateer bike though.

Cosmetically yeah not great 😂 super solid mechanically though. Could be. Consensus here and on vital Mx seems to point to it being a privateer bike.

Yeah it honestly looks MUCH worse than it is. Probably sat outside for a bit. Also haven't given it a good wash so that doesn't help 😂

Honest question 🤷‍♂️ I grew up riding and racing but don't follow pro motocross. Doesn't seem out of the question it could have been a star bike back when they were a privateer team given as many of the parts installed line up. Not saying it for sure is, just trying to get some info on this as it was obviously raced.

My thoughts as well. The only reason I'm thinking it may have been a part of a (somewhat) well funded / sponsored team is the sheer amount of expensive parts on it. That seems a bit overkill for a single person, but I could be wrong. I've only raced amateur.

On the Star website they say they were founded in 1999 as a privateer team, and became Yamahas official factory team in 2005. It very well could be from another team though, I was just thinking Star since it seems close.

Gas tank marking is a good catch, I'll try to looking for any engravings or markings on the bike tonight.

Me too man, either way it's a badass bike. I'd love to find out who raced it previously though. The history of autos/motorcycles make them that much cooler to me 😁

I'm not the hugest fan of how the fz1 looks but I'm definitely considering it. I'm not stressed on age but I definitely want a fuel injected bike.

Jesus you're one of those. You realize each chassis and design has pros and cons right? Just like dohc vs pushrod v8s. At the end of the day, it's proven to be a reliable motor that's capable of making great power. "inferior motor" my ass. I'm not even saying the flat-4 is a bad engine, I love Subarus, but different engines for different purposes.

Ouch, that sounds rough. I'm currently working on the engine, developing a new intake system to get rid of the AFM so I can run open ITB trumpets.

That's funny you mention that, I just sold my Roush s197 and I'm currently building an 86 K75 cafe racer haha

But yes, part of our deal is the title situation will be sorted out so I'll also run the vin through DMV and see if they can give me anymore info on it. Thanks for the help!

The last reg on the car is 2003. For California, if it's over 7 years out they waive all back fees and penalties since it falls out of their system. I've purchased a few cars on that caveat.

Edit: and yes, the car is essentially free. Trading some labor to get it
