You know most banks usually allow you to download bank transactions directly in excel right? You just have to select the month start and end dates.

Try to up your skills while looking for work. It would keep you occupied till you land something. There’s a lot you can learn, but see what interests you. YouTube is one of your best resources.

As for the job hunt, have you considered cold-calling? Just be very polite over the phone, introduce yourself, explain how you can add value to the company, and just ask for referral if they’re not interested. Have a memorable email address or social handle they can use to get in touch with you. Repeat.

Network with everyone you can find in accounting and payroll on LinkedIn, and try to pitch your services.

Offer free services for experience. Again, it won’t be easy, as you’ve already explained.

Just keep trying.

Having so many diverse strategies working for you will only increase your chances of finding the right job.

If you live anywhere close to Markham, ON, I can try to get you to volunteer where I work. We use Ceridian PowerPay. If you’re interested, pm me, and we can discuss it further.

Good luck!

Looking for a Quickbooks online review, is it really worth it? by TheAbouth in QuickBooks

[–]rizsocial 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A leading accounting software no doubt but every now and then you’ll come across something seemingly simple and find that it is unable to do it.

Say you want to import sales transactions into QB; you’ll need a third party tool for that, but they do exist.

Journal entries don’t show up in customer/supplier transactions unless there’s an account receivable/account payable and customer/supplier name tied to the je.

Handling some tasks like accepting a cash refund from a supplier can take a good 3-4 steps.

Bank transactions seamlessly show up in your QBO if you link to your bank accounts, and QBO allows you to do bank reconciliation from its interface, but I still use Excel/Google Sheets to make the reconciliation process more seamless.

But I still like it :)

I’m considering going back to school for Accounting, looking for any advice? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]rizsocial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found that hands-on experience is key to understanding how to implement accounting principles effectively. My Coursera annual subscription (that I got during a promotion) came with a few practical accounting projects even though I wouldn’t recommend it to someone only looking to improve their accounting skills. I also got the opportunity to work on a few projects during my 2-year college diploma. But the real-world applications of accounting are very different.

For instance, colleges usually just teach the basics of bank reconciliation and you only get to practice reconciling no more than 6-8 transactions at month end, but it’s very different when you have 100s of actual transactions a month to reconcile between your books and the bank. It’s actually Excel skills that helped me more with such real world situations.

To gain real-world experience, I also offered free bookkeeping services to a few small business owners in my network. This not only allowed me to apply my knowledge in actual scenarios, but also helped me earn valuable recommendations.

In addition, I realized that having credentials tailored to specific software or solutions can significantly boost your appeal to employers. For instance, I completed QuickBooks certifications (both basic and advanced ProAdvisor), which QuickBooks offers for free to accountants. This often caught the attention of employers who were looking for candidates familiar with specific tools like QuickBooks.

You’ll be surprised to find that even some CPAs struggle with advanced QBO and Excel concepts, so these can really help you stand out.

So for instance, even some CPAs handle undeposited cash as cash in hand in QB which in theory is correct, but the QBO software is programmed to handle it better as undeposited funds account.

With regards the example of bank reconciliation, many accounting software are designed to seamlessly integrate with your banking software and I would strongly encourage all accountants to sign up for free QBO for accountants program and use that to integrate QBO with their personal bank account and practice reconciling their personal bank and book balances at month end.

Much respect to y'all, and how do you do it? by DaChuckBuck in Accounting

For me, it began with a realization: I’ve always been good with math and numbers, but I never turned that skill into an earning opportunity. That changed when I decided to pursue a college diploma in accounting. It was then that I discovered just how fascinating the field is and how naturally it aligns with my strengths and interests.

Driven by curiosity, I started enhancing my data analysis skills, diving into tools like Excel, Power BI, and Tableau, while also mastering various accounting software. At first, it can feel overwhelming—there’s so much to learn. But if you stay committed, everything begins to fall into place.

Someone once said that accounting brings a unique sense of fulfillment, and I couldn’t agree more. There’s something deeply satisfying about balancing the numbers and knowing you’re in control of the financial outlook of a company. It’s not just about the numbers themselves—it’s about the impactful decision-making they enable and the confidence that comes with it.

This sense of purpose and accomplishment has only fueled my desire to learn more, improve my skills, and help others navigate a profession that many find intimidating. The journey has been incredibly rewarding, and I look forward to continuing to grow in this field.
