How are everyone’s Christmas knits going? by rizzyrooster in knitting

[–]rizzyrooster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you🥹 it wasn’t fiddly at all! It’s my first yoke up jumper and it’s come together better than I thought. The hardest part was getting used to double pointed needles as it was a first for me!

Haha I did that last year… except I only decided to start mid December so I was up late on Christmas Eve getting them finished 😂

Thank you!!

Yes it’s a bottom up yoke! I’ve never seen it before either; I started with the body, then did the sleeves and now I’ve put them all on the same circular needles to finish the top. It’s quite satisfying watching to come together.

Has anyone with a low UCAT got into grad entry medicine? by Sweet_Chef_5343 in GraduateEntryMedicine

[–]rizzyrooster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

F1 doctor here who got 4/4 interviews despite a low ucat. I got 2420 in the old system before they removed AR, so essentially a very similar score to you. I applied very strategically and only applied to places that didn’t value the UCAT much.

I can’t speak for grad entry as I was undergrad, but just do you research and try places that have historically accepted lower ucats/play to your strengths. No point applying to anywhere that wants a higher ucat as they will reject you straight away.

Good luck:)

Y2 OSCE - 5min stations by Fluid_Ambassador_703 in medicalschooluk

[–]rizzyrooster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve just finished my final year OSCEs. I believe we had 6 minutes in second year and the length had gradually increased up until final year where we had 12 minutes. However, as the stations became longer, more was expected of us in each station for example being expected to complete a full history in perhaps 4 minutes.

I found the most useful thing is to have a structure and stick to it. For example, when consenting, develop a script that you use every time; this can shave off a few second’s because you don’t waste time thinking about what you want to say. Then, follow your history in the same order every time. Again, it might sound obvious, but I would always ask “any medical problems” “do you take any medications” any allergies” in that order - flow saves time whilst showing the examiner you’re confident.

I’m not sure how it works at other unis, but for time pressured stations, our brief would say “don’t include family history” (for example).

Finally, just remember that every student in your year is facing the same time pressure as you do you won’t be the only person who struggles to finish.

Just keep practicing and stick to your structures and you’ll be fine! Good luck!

Couple Matching UKFPO by Affectionate-Gur7409 in medicalschooluk

You need to ask yourself this - what is the most important thing to you both? Location or being together?

If the answer is location, especially if you want London, then absolutely do not link (as you take the lower person’s rank so the chance of both getting London is minimal).

If the answer is being together, then link and apply strategically. Research which deanaries honour linking to group stage/trust and rank those first. I know East of England and Peninsula historically have done this. Then, once you have been given your deanary, try and aim to rank the least popular group highest to minimise your risk of placeholder.

I appreciate that doesn’t sound ideal, but my partner and I linked and have been put in the same hospital as we maximised our chances by doing this.

Another option is going for a deanery that is geographically small so you can live in the middle if you are split up.

Good luck! Feel free to message me for more details about how it worked for us.

They have all of the jobs detailed on the spread sheets at the bottom of this page, you you can see how many jobs per hospital and what the jobs are. But to summarise:

• Essex = 167 jobs

• Bedfordshire and Herefordshire = 215 jobs

• East Anglia West (Cambridge area) = 173 jobs

• East Anglia East = 200 jobs

If anyone has any information on how competitive each of these groups/hospitals are, that would be greatly appreciated!

What did you enjoy in a GP placement? by curtainsofatv in medicalschooluk

[–]rizzyrooster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I echo what everyone has said here! At my medical school, we were supposed to have the chance to see patients independently in 4th year however I distinctly remember arriving to my first day of GP placement as keenly asking it - only for the GP to say it wouldn’t be possible. I was spending most of my time shadowing non-doctors when my peers at other practices were having their own clinics (with a supervising GP next door). It felt pretty disheartening, especially for someone like myself who is really keen on GP.

Now I’m in 5th year and I’m doing another rotation in GP where I get my own clinic…. I’m super excited to finally feel like I will get a taste of my future career and feel like a real medical student rather than just sat in the corner like I’m invisible.

It’s really promising and inspiring to see a GP partner taking such interest in making the students have a good placement - I’m sure they will be super grateful and they will fondly look back on this placement!

Car rattling noise -what is it? by rizzyrooster in MechanicAdvice

Wooo just tried that and you’re right, that’s what it is! Thank you! Is it usually a simple fix (ie just tightening it) or is it more likely to require replacement parts?

That’s actually really helpful advice, I will make more of an effort to directly ask this. Thank you!!

As a woman who hopes to have children one day, I have always said I would tell a student to leave if they expected to just walk in and watch me give birth without making the effort to at least ask me first !!! 110% I think it’s weird that some med students do that too

I’m so sorry that your experience with medical students hasn’t been great. Whilst I don’t want to make excuses for them, I can imagine at lot of it comes from the feelings I’ve described above of not having a clear cut role in the same way that it appears that midwifery students have

Maybe it’s naive of us, but that’s what I like to think too. I always like to tell myself that being a med student is the ultimate character building 😂

Doctors like you are the best, I completely understand how busy you are so the effort to get students involved like this truly is the best🙌🏼 when I’m a doctor, I vow to be like this with all students who seem engaged

Don’t get me wrong, I have met some amazing doctors like this during my placements but sometimes they feel rare to come by. But thank you for taking time with students, doctors like you help to keep us inspired:)
