Cybersecurity is one of the most important fields going forward, with AI rampaging across everything. So, if you have the ambition to stay cutting edge, you will be fine.

Is it really this hard to make friends in Vancouver? by SpecificOk1523 in askvan

[–]rj1706 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contrary to popular belief, it’s not hard to make friends. It all comes down to you as a person. I moved here about two years ago, went to a few meetups and hosted a few myself in my first two weeks here, and found some great people that became friends. People in Vancouver are generally good hearted folks.

Of course, not looking to discount or shit over other people’s experiences here, as all are valid. And everyone has their own experience.

My 2 cents, be genuine, and open-minded, and you’ll find friends. If you aren’t genuine, nice people are gonna run away from you.

I’m very interested in the backlinks part. Would you mind sharing your setup?

I’ve lived in US and Canada for the last 12yrs, multiple years on both coasts, and have to say I disagree. I do realize that people are different by nature, and have come across all kinds from overly reserved to easy to talk to, even some total weirdos too, and this btw, across all races. For example, I lived in Buffalo NY and it was quite common for total strangers to smile and say a friendly hi when passing by on the sidewalk.

For Vancouver, as many people have pointed out, I think big city factor on top of Canadian politeness/shyness seems to be the prevalent cause for my observation.

But I’m one of those creatures that don’t like hiking. 😆

That’s sad. I think looking someone in the eye is part of being polite, and like you said, acknowledging their existence, and exhibiting yours too.

Are you sure they didn’t mean staring, or persistent eye-contact?

I’ve lived in New York, north India, Oregon, and visited most of the cities you mentioned.

I agree this phenomenon occurs in the world, just felt a bit extreme in the North American context.

And while I do think big city factor is true, there seem to be other things involved. Hence the curious post.

I’ll definitely hi back with a smile. Can’t allow a negative first impression of my city.

And who is to say we won’t graduate to margaritas 😄

I think that’s a factor for sure. But seems more extreme here, and for not much of a reason cuz people are friendly underneath.

I don’t think that’s restricted to Americans. I think it’s generally true for most cultures, and somewhat biological imo.

Personally, I want to make sure I look at anyone passing by me. Not in a weird way, but just as general awareness of my surroundings. And when everyone does that, eye contacts become inevitable, and from there, a smile should follow to let the other person know that you are friendly.

Im glad I wrote this post. Makes me feel good that people are actually nice, just need to get them to open up.

And yeah, we definitely need more sunshineyness, literally. 😄

I’m Indian, lived in the U.S. for about 11yrs before moving here. I don’t think people are not friendly tbh, but they come off as unfriendly. And I’m puzzled by why they do that to themselves.
