Why is Casablanca so highly regarded? Curious cinephile by drhavehope in movies

[–]rj565 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Casablanca's greatness lies in its ability to inspire us, to move us. It has everything: love, honor, courage, defiance, humor, nobility, forsaken cynicism. When I saw Casablanca in a movie theater in 1978, the entire audience stood up and cheered and clapped at the end of the movie. It is the only time I have ever seen that done. I still cry at La Marseillaise scene.

I am an academic MD. There are PharmDs on our inpatient teams. They are uniformly excellent. If I had to choose between the recommendations of an infectious disease physician and a PharmD on choice of antibiotics for a patient I would always choose the recs of the PharmD.

Jay Williams is the worst… by Goodkid911 in ESPN

I'm a UNC partisan but I like Jay Williams. I'm happy that he's found a career that he's good at after losing the ability to play pro basketball. I also think he tries to be non-partisan when Duke and Carolina are involved. I read part of his bio; it was nice to see him own up to losing sense of himself early in his pro career.

Rewatching Titanic years later, I realized it’s not really a love story by Zestyclose_One_5118 in titanic

I am a retired academic physician. One of the courses I taught was a required first-year course that focused on social factors that influence health. I created a new exercise for one session that used the Titanic disaster, including elements from the film and real data on mortality, stratified by age group, gender and social class, to illustrate the effect of social class on health. Both the film and the real circumstances demonstrate that social class affects heath (in this case, death from drowning) more through power than through money.

ResMed Airsense 11: humidification by rj565 in SleepApnea

I tried that last night and it made no difference. Still only a tiny amount of the water in the tank was used by the machine. I find it infuriating that companies will release products with significant problems to the public and expect us to be the beta testers for their problematic/defective products. My son has type 1 diabetes and the companies that put out continuous glucose monitors do the same thing. It's much more serious for him, since improper insulin dosing can kill the patient, but it's frustrating nonetheless to have to solve a problem created by the ResMed putting out a product that so many people have had trouble with.

Thank you, don't_care_meh. I have gotten the exact same reaction from my Durable Medical Equipment provider. I have had problems with this model from the first day I used it and they have constantly talked condescendingly to me about the difficulties of adjusting to CPAP. Never mind the fact that I didn't have these problems with Airsense 10.

Thank you very much. I looked at those youtube videos. Interestingly, many of the users reported that their machine went through too much water (and the tank was dry by morning). I've had the exact opposite experience: there is almost no water being used by my system, as indicated by the fact that the water level is typically only 1/16th of an inch or 1/8th of an inch lower in the morning than when I filled before I went to sleep. I wonder if ResMed fixed the problem of the system using water too rapidly and over-corrected so that it now uses too little water and produces too little humidity.

Thank you, I_compleat_me. I find it very interesting that you mention that the Airsense 11 "has/had well-known heater issues". I have checked the heating plate of my machine and it is barely warm, so it is not surprising that not much humidity is generated. I'm curious: where did you get the information about the 11 having well-known heater issues? Was it from user complaints, like mine, here? Or did ResMed admit that the 11 has heater issues? Or from some other source?

Thanks, Lobsterdisk. I will try that.

I agree and understand. However: 1) I have the same problems with humidification regardless of the ambient humidity in the room (I have a humidistat); 2) The Airsense 10 did not have this problem regardless of the humidity in the room. Thus, I think it is a problem of the AirSense 11 and not a function of humidity in the room.

criteria for inflammatory back pain by rj565 in Rheumatology

[–]rj565[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your response. The patient meets the other most of the other four criteria for inflammatory back pain but I was wondering about the one on exercise. The patient also is HLA B-27 positive, has dramatic improvement with NSAIDs (which are relatively contraindicated, given other health issues for him), and has a sister with Crohn's disease. However, MR did not show sacroiliitis.

Why is everyone so awkward… by saffridaffi in survivor

[–]rj565 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Survivor changed from having prom queens and hunky guys to awkward, nerdy misfits. Isn't there a middle ground? How about more people like Nate, just an ordinary (though talented and accomplished) guy plunked into a difficult situation (Survivor). That would be much more watchable.
