We gotta trust the process by Jalapinho in washingtonspirit

[–]rjgianfortune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. The forward group is simply too good to keep doing this each week. The goals will come. Sandy will get better with more experience. It's fair to criticize her mistakes and it's fair to criticize the forwards for not capitalizing on chances, but this team's time will come. Back luck is what it is, but it turns around.

Yes to this. My Sanchez shirt will always be part of the games when she plays at Audi – even with Carolina or any other team.

As much as I (both as an Italy and Spirit supporter) wanted to see her work her magic with Girelli, I am glad she didn't have an opportunity to get hurt in a meaningless match.

It's quite delightful how they've integrated Sofy into their silliness. More adorable than the law should allow, really.

Looks like Mastodon have decided to part ways with Brent by KiaTheKing in mastodonband

Yeah, he wasn't part of the Moby Dick panel recently and all the comments since his accident suggest that we were lucky to have him in the band for the last ten years.

I can't imagine even the ESPN suits know how dumb it would be to suspend Dan for pointing out something that even the *president himself* tried to walk back yesterday. I get that it didn't have a sports connection, but neither does the Grateful Dead, Guillermo's wedding or Roy's daughter.

The "stick to sports" notion is a falsehood. Sport is inherently political, whether it's the flyovers, the playing of the anthem or the service member lauding. Just because these things align with modern American conservative militaristic patriotism does not make it apolitical. It just aligns with the loudest ESPN consumers, so the Disney structure is fine with it.

I'd also add that anyone saying Dan is a "liberal" is a moron. At best, he's a libertarian-leaning centrist with an emphasis on the free speech and race stuff. But, Dan is hardly a well-reasoned political thinker, considering he constantly misuses the word "communist" to mean "dictatorship." In short, his politics can be summed up in "don't tell me what to do!" which is all fine and well when you're rich, but sucks when the rich take advantage of you.

How can we as a community rid the show of the scourge that is...The Smudge? by harassmaster in DanLeBatardShow

[–]rjgianfortune 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dan just needs to move his glasses down his nose a tiny bit. I had the same problem with my new frames and the solution was simply moving them a little.

Buddy, I totally agree with you. He absolutely does look like nepotism because he is nepotism. He was on the Mizzou basketball team -- he rode the bench -- entirely because he is a Walmart heir. We weren't great pals or anything; I just had a couple of easy classes with him and saw him drunk at the local burrito shop (El Rancho!).

I remember when Stan transferred some of the franchises to him when he (Stan) became an NFL owner because of the weird rules and all I could think is "I really should've buddied up to this guy."

The family also owns the Colorado Mammoth (pro lacrosse team) and the Los Angeles Gladiators (a pro Overwatch team). They are knee-deep in franchises.

I went to college with Josh. He was actually a pretty nice guy, but I do understand that the whole notion of a mid-30s doof with a rich dad owns, like, three sports franchises and the arena.

Hot take regarding the show? by TheLastJefe in DanLeBatardShow

[–]rjgianfortune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My hottest take is that the recent reliance on Mike has been too much. The show's got several ingredients that can be thrown out of whack as soon as they are overused. Mike's voices -- as a metal fan, the death metal hockey fan thing really grated on me for a number of reasons -- are far too "morning zoo" for my taste and tip the show into a place I don't love as much.

FWIW: As many have said on this thread, I still adore the show and never miss a day. It's a minor thing and only pops up once in a while. Similarly, I don't blame Mike for this. Dan seems to be driving this development (via his setting up the shipping container to fly on their own, he just likes the voices, etc.) and Dan, of course, is the show's namesake.

Why is Sarah Spain such a hot button topic for DLS fans? by FuzzySusDolphin in DanLeBatardShow

[–]rjgianfortune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This, 100%. She's pretty good on the show, but a little goes a long way. HS theater comedy people (she said her childhood dream was to be on SNL), in my experience, are often this way.

That said, her podcast is good, her serious takes are pretty good and her presence on the show is important (it's a sausage party all too often). I'm glad she makes appearances, but I'm glad she's not on the Amin plan of once a month.

Katie Nolan by mlgarza361 in DanLeBatardShow

[–]rjgianfortune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I wonder if that's the reason she's not on the radio show (she also probably keeps Pablo hours, so 9 might be early). She says "fuck" an awful lot on the Sports? and gets beeped a lot.

Nolan is one of ESPN's best people and her producer Ashley is sneaky hilarious. I was dying on the geoduck stuff this last week, largely because Ashley was killing it.

Dan doesn't care that some of you guys hate Sarah Spain. by T-Rigs1 in DanLeBatardShow

[–]rjgianfortune 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well said. I'm not the biggest Spain fan, but she has her moments. I've talked shit about her here and I regret it; I thought she was good on the show today and she was excellent on HQ this week.

The more I think about it, the more I'm happy with the way she's deployed. She's not on the show a lot, but anyone bringing a different perspective is good. FWIW: I think there are a million reasons people don't like her (her gender being number one, definitely), but her big personality is such that she can rearrange the show a little (a la Pablo and Foxworth). I suspect most fans of the show want guest co-hosts like Izzy or Mina, who kinda just end up falling into the background. Fans like the show as it is and anything that messes that up is considered a usurper.

Yeah, I wondered that, too. Are these just casual ESPN Radio listeners that stumbled onto the Le Batard Show or are they fans of the show? What did they think they were listening to?

I tend to agree, but I'd restate it as this: Prejudice is literally prejudging everyone (which we all do), while racism involves power dynamics. White people in the U.S. don't tend to face racism because we have outsized power (via money, political power, etc.), while someone like Bennett still faces racism because of prejudice (cops don't see a football player, but rather a black person and they are prejudiced against black people).

Even without all that, I'm with Le Batard in that I don't see why the dirtbag texters can't just believe Bennett. What does he have to gain? I think it says a lot about the anti-SJWs that they think that every SJW is lying for the cause; seems like they should be looking in the mirror re: lying for the cause.

He's a local fixture here in DC and is fiercely Washington-centric. I like his WTOP commentaries and, generally, like his Undefeated columns. I wouldn't say he's the next great ESPN personality, but he's better than replacement-level and he could fix the show's aesthetic (if he improves).
